Maybe Intel ought not to accept MS's promise of support for new chip architectures and look to FOSS for their hot new chip's support for the first couple years.
I suppose you think it's just some happy coincidence that Apple is going to start using Intel chips? I think Intel has had enough of Microsoft dictating their success or failure.
Apple will be more than happy to include Intel's new whiz-bang chips they come up with in their products. If the yields aren't that great it doesn't matter because Apple is a specialty computer maker (they'll be larger yields than IBM or Freescale no doubt).
Don't forget that Apple still owns shares in ARM, too.
As much as I dislike the way Chinese government tramples human rights, their ways of keeping greedy corporations in their place deserves some respect.
That's because Chinese leaders see how corporations in America have gained control of the government. In a Communist/psudo-fascist government that's NEVER going to be allowed. It's pretty much common knowledge that China is not interested in US copyright or IP, it'll be interesting to see how, going forward, MS gets screwed by this.
Microsft vs. China: it's like a pitbull vs. a velociraptor.
If I didn't know better, I would've said that this is a POV-Ray animation...
Really, because I didn't know that the sun made such a "hotspot" reflection on the earth. Interesting. All the other pictures I've seen from outer space of the earth make it look less "plastic".
If you stopped hiding that fact from them, sat them down and said "look, here's how things are structured"
Well, there's two problems fighting each other here. The first is that users don't want to learn better computing habits, the second is that they want the computer to know where everything is at all times.
Personally I think Spotlight is more of the solution than anything else. There just needs to be more plug-ins (I already sent a request for "aspect ratio" to Apple for image and movie files).
In a system like Mac OS X where the default user folder contains Sites, Public, Movies, Music, Desktop, Documents, Library, Pictures and the mess people still make of their files, it just shows that it's not really that computers are difficult it's that people really don't like personal responsibility.
That's always been my problem - finding someone else with the DS.
I think Nintendo is realising this and thats the point of the upcoming ability to be able to tap into any WiFi wireless point to play multi-player games.
The Boston Tea party did not protest against a democratic and elected government, but against a monarch taxing unrepresented citizens.
The Boston Tea Party wasn't a protest. They dresses up like native Americans and destroyed property which did not belong to the government but to a private trade company.
In a monarchy, there are no represented citizens. The founding fathers were a bunch of rich guys who wanted to not only be rich but powerful as well. It's easy to overthrow a monarchy when you're not in the country of the monarchy.
The market seems to be more concerned with whether or not I can get on the net with yet ANOTHER device, instead of making games compelling enough for me to WANT to get online with it.
Japans standard of living is almost equal with America, FYI. I remember reading it in a US News and World reports article about developed nations less than a year ago. It may be different due to culture but they make about the same money and things cost about the same on average across Japan as America.
While I agree that there were definite reasons that 9/11 happened and we were only victims of retaliation, the MAIN difference being that the Columbine incident involved CHILDREN.
This is the same reason that the OKC bombing was so heinous, something like 75% of the victims were children.
I was lucky enough to go to a private high school (by my own choosing) where the teachers got to know all of their students.
I went to a couple different boarding schools (moved) from 5th-Sophomore year. Strangely enough there tends to be less exclusion than at public schools. Sure there's always the kid or two that gets picked on but they're still your friend and they know that, they just happen to be the Cartman of the group.
The twenties are for doing lines of coke with the senator off the ass of a call girl.
This is Apple we're talking about. They're doing lines of coke with the call girl off the senator's ass. Associating with public officials, ugh, how common!
I make no argument against global warming per se, just against the assumption that "we caused it" and that we "we need to stop or the world will end." FUD, FUD, FUD. Life existed very well before the concentrations of materials lead to the fossile fuel deposits, and it will continue just damn fine even if we end up buring it all back out into the atmosphere that it came from anyway.
I'd just like to point out that we (humans) weren't here when that was the case and that we (humans) probably won't live through it if it was to happen again.
There is no doubt that the earth and a lot of animal life is going to be just fine if conditions change such that humans die off, a lot of animals will probably be better off, in fact, mainly the marine life that we keep poisoning.
There is actually a better economy in biofuels (such as soy diesel) then there is in mining fossil fuels. It just opens up too many possibilities for third world countries who have the land and labour resources to produce them that the first world nations will never stand for it.
There has been an attempt to engage people for the last 25 years in a reasonable debate on what to do about the pollution problem it causes (the evidence is overwhelming and the consensus in the scientific community quite plainly asserts this based on countless studies) yet the typical retaliation is to claim that it is too expensive to change anything
Already we are seeing the depletion inversely matching our dependence. As it turns out, the countries with the oil are going to have the power. Republicans are never going to stand for that.
All it's going to take is for oil producing countries to stick it to the largest consumers of oil before we see a shift. Personbally I predict around 20 years because there will be a few wars fought (as this is the first) before we finally give into renewable resources.
Then the big controversy will be whether to build giant seawalls around the coastal cities or to run screaming for higher ground.
}It's possible that fuel cells will reverse "global warming". With more water vapour in there air, one can only assume there will be more cloud cover. Before too long there will be people screaming that fuel cells are going to bring the new ice age.
Except they are not charging you for your bandwidth - that is a charge from your ISP and you cannot reasonably hold a website accountable for your bandwidth if you go and visit them voluntarily.
Ladies and gentlemen, we've reached a new high at Slashdot. Not only can people not be bothered to RTFA, now they can't be bothere to RTF summary.
We're not talking about the cost of bandwidth to DOWNLOAD the song, we're talking about the cost of bandwidth to UPLOAD the song to others!
Duh, P2P application, not download service. RTFS!!!
Advertising (which some websites are just big ads for a product) is always a loss. It has no effect on the actual product and cannot be measured directly. Conjecture and assumptions are the only way to track how or if advertising works and the effectiveness of it. It is not like money is being spent to better the product, streamline the production.
We live in a mass market era, between TiVO, ad blockers and the like it's becoming clear that advertising does not work anymore, marketers are just refusing to accept that. It does not work because people are not interested in it, that's proof it's becoming a failed way of getting information out about the product, and threats are not going to make pewople more interested.
Certain companies do little to no advertising and are outrageously successful, Abercrombie & Fitch is the first company to spring to mind. The trick is to get your product into your focus group. A&F does this by hiring the type of people they want to wear their clothes. Other companies could do it by instead of spending all that money on advertising, actually giving their products away to specific individuals (as designers do), or making them cheaper.
With a connected world, a company's opinion about their own product is worthless.

Those both happened to be "trade dress" lawsuits which have nothing to do with patents.
Because larger companies can support and often require in-house video and graphics departments whereas smaller companies farm that sort of thing out.
Not that I disagree with your assertion that Linux is a better server product than a desktop product, what makes Linux better than Darwin?

Dude, what planet are you from where "Trenchcoat Mafia" falls under "normal"?
And BTW, the one kids' grandfather was a gun fanatic, which is where the guns came from.
so that you become desensitised to it while it is performing benign duties.
Does carbon ever exist in a liquid state? Liquid diamonds?

Cursive writing can be learned relatively quickly, actually - within a week, if you really want to.

Yeah, all those statements are equally as vaccuous.

Enuit. Eskimo is a racial slur that means fish eater. It's analogous to nigger.
