It's the first time I have seen a movie available for renting before it was released to the theaters. 4. Not piracy but Netflix and other competitors on ISP Capping Is Becoming the New DRM · · Score: 1

Cable companies are losing revenue to Netflix as more and more people learn they can get more for less than $10.00 a month then they can get from the cable company premium channels that cost twice as much. They hide behind "piracy" but they are just using it for an excuse to impose usage taxes to offset the revenue they are losing from customers dropping their expensive premium channels, and if those taxes and caps keep some customers from taking advantage of unlimited streaming from Netflix, it is all the more profits for them. People need to wake up and realize this is NOT about piracy it is about monopoly power and protecting their bottom line.

  5. Re:Time to cancel Netflix if true. on Netflix Throttling Instant Video Streaming · · Score: 5, Interesting

Oh well.. I tried to go legit, but time to fire up bittorrent again, I guess. They are just shooting themselves in the foot.

Any time we have trouble it usually is associated with our provider Comcast, not Netflix. However, with some of the streams from Netfilx the audio is out of sync or the picture quality isn't as good as it should be.

We use the HD Tivo and at times I feel almost guilty for all I get from Netflix, with the 2 at a time unlimited, my actual dvd cost has been about $.95 per dvd (4 dvds a week) and I watch more instant shows than I do from Comcast. I cut back to 1 at a time starting next month, we just can not keep watching 4 rentals a week with the weather getting nicer. Netflix makes it easy to switch between the various plans.

Netflix cured me of downloading movies, I don't get the latest screeners these days but do get anything Netflix has, and they do carry a large selection of classics that you can't find with bittorrent - the best part is there are no upload ratios and I don't have to worry about getting to 90% and having all the seeders bail out. Some rentals you need to wait in line, but if you keep plenty in your queue, the rentals will arrive on a regular basis.

I do keep seeding Ubuntu & Kubuntu, bittorent is still great for linux . There will always be people that will want everything for free, but so far Netflix has done more to curb illegal downloading than any other effort. More companies should follow the Netflix lead, rather than play the silly lawsuit game. On the other hand, Rhapsody was not a worthwhile cost for us, in theory it sounded great but, for us the reliability just was not there, after several months we dropped that subscription - they might have improved it since that time.

Netflix is growing and the cable companies are concerned that too many of their customers will learn they can pay Netflix less than $10.00 a month and get more movies and tv streamed to their tv than the cable companies are willing to provide for twice that amount. The cable companies need to find a way to stop Netflix from stealing thier cutomers without actually saying they are after Netflix, as the FCC would not like it if the cable companies throttles back their competition in order to protect their own products.

Now you are getting to the meat of it all - It all has to do with you buying movies and other content from Comcast competitors. Comcast spent a lot of time and effort getting people locked into contracts, and they can bully them into buying more Comcast content. Comcast can do this now, but time is running out, soon they won't have the monoply power them now enjoy and then many customers are going to remember the abuse they got from Comcast. Of course there will always be those individuals that will support everything big business does, heck, they will even give up their social security to bail out Wall Street because someone said it was a crises.

    From "savetheinternet.com"

    It's About Video

The not-so-hidden secret behind all of this is video. Network owners are waging a quiet campaign to control how video gets distributed via the Web. In their view, the Internet should only be used for e-mail and surfing. Internet video should be distributed via ISPs. It's a model that treats the Internet like cable TV -- where companies like Comcast, AT&T and Verizon get to pick the channels you get to see.

The popular trend in video, however, is streaming in the opposite direction. More and more people are becoming their own creators and distributors of homespun video content. For proof that people like to watch videos created by others, go no further than YouTube, which boasts more than 100 million "views" each day.

YouTube is just the beginning of this revolution. It's heart and soul, though, beats elsewhere -- with the use of peer-to-peer applications. Peer-to-peer traffic is spreading via popular technologies like Bit Torrent and Gnutella, which allow users to upload and share videos, music and other rich media without a middleman. It's follows a non-discriminatory Web model that encourages innovation without permission.

The phone and cable companies are desperate to shut this down. In the case of Comcast, they're doing it by spying on traffic and stifling the free exchange of ideas that will continue to make the Internet so remarkable.

Never again will I be on a jury if I can help it. I think you are better off without a jury unless you have something like a "race" card to play that can win over some of the jury. I know they say a jury of your peers but you really only get a limited number of choices and if all of those are individuals with limitations you are in for some serious trouble.

I am considering dropping Tivo when this contract expires - I did have 4 series one Dtivos and currently have a series 2 (dt) and although the extra features increased, the actual benefits for me and my family did not.

The more peopel realize you don't have to be a computer geek to run linux, the more they will find it a worthwhile investment. It's ironic, windows users spend months learning how to use windows and complain they are afraid to try linux because it will take too long to learn - well, some are realizing it is NOT that difficult.
