IANAL, either, but my understanding is that fair use does not require that the media distributors make it easy nor possible to make a copy for fair purposes, it simply says that they cannot successfully sue you if you have made a copy that follows the guidelines set out by the fair use laws.
Yeah, except if they ROT-13 it and you decrypt it, you've just violated the DMCA, haven't you?
Was it an Albertson's? I've had that problem there with my ALberta license. Every other store looks it up in the book. At Albertson's they are either too lazy or too stupid. Not sure which one it is.
It seems to me that if the employer pays you for a while, and then comes back to you with the contract in a year or two and says, "We didn't agree with this," you should be able to tell them to take a flying leap. After all, it's not your fault they didn't read it, and the fact that they paid you for services rendered indicates that they were willing participants in the relationship. Any lawyer care to comment?
Whoops, that's not what I meant. I meant Western as in "Western" world. I am well aware that it's on Canada's east coast. I just get St. John's, Newfoundland and Saint John, New Brunswick mixed up all the time.
Geez, reading the article, this guy sure looks like a terrorist. After all, I'm sure a lot of people try to blow up planes flying from the decadent Western sin city of St John's (or is it St John? I'm from Canada, and I can never remember that).
I love the way the security guards seem to make a point out of stopping people who obviously ARE NOT threats. Remember the story about the Medal of Honor recipeient a few weeks ago? Why was he searched? How many other more credible threats stroll onto planes while the security guards are busy with Grampa and Grandma? Maybe the security guards "Atta" pay attention to who is walking by them, and not just pick every third person, eh?
The ironic thing was, I was scanning a friend's network because he asked me to check for vulnerabilities in it.
I understand. Just last week, I did the same sort of thing. Went to the doctor and mentioned to him that a friend of mine has a burning sensation when he urinates. Funny thing is, the prescription is in my name.

How much did you send to the people that ran the mixing board, or even to the guy that swept out the floor after the recording. I wouldn't really call these people middlemen when it comes to music recording, and they deserve to be paid also.
You mean the way the guy who sweeps the floor of the car dealership gets a cut of the commissions due to the sales force? Or the way the maid at Stephen King's place gets a percentage of the gross of his latest book?
The guys running the mixing board and the guy sweeping the studio are getting paid by the record company. If they don't like what they make, maybe they should look somewhere else. It's not my job to keep them employed, you know.
You have to register for Selective Service (and oh boy, is it ever selective. No women there! How's that for equality, Gloria?)under some circumstances even if you aren't a citizen. For more info, see Selective Service System.
Exactly. Now that I think about it, a digital answering machine would have to have copy protection built in. Absolutely fucking stupid.

Jesus H. Christ. So any pocket calculator with a M+ key on it is going to be illegal? What a bunch of assholes.
On another note, where do the porn companies stand in this? I think I'm going to start writing the big porn video companies and let them know that movies they make are being shared online. That could be the one thing that could kill this bill. Imagine telling Mary soccer mom that the reason her computer is hobbled is to protect the profits of pornographers. She'll get into her Suburban and drive right over to her Congressman's office with a letter.
It's time to go tell the content cartels to go fuck themselves. Fritz Hollings can go to hell as well. If the technology industy can't agree on standards blah blah blah. Shut the fuck up Fritz. You want an example of what my life would be like if the content cartels go their way all the time? Here we go....
When I run, I really like my mp3 player. It doesn't skip like compact discs do, and it fits into my pocket. Oh wait, those aren't allowed. Ok...how about cassette tapes? Hmm...this is not as good, it's bigger and I don't have random access to songs. What's that Fritz? These aren't any good either? I can pirate stuff with these? Well, I guess I'm going to run without any of the shit that Hollywood pumps out then. It's not like Vivendi Universal is stepping in with an innovative new technology any time soon.
And of course, I would like to tape that show that is on while I'm running. Can't do that now, can I? God forbid using a PVR too, those things are brutal for Hollywood. Ok...I just won't watch it then....
I'm sure everyone on Slashdot knows where I'm going with this. If it becomes too cumbersome to access entertainment, people are going to look for something else. Lest our good friend, Fritz Hollings, the Senator from Disney forget, politicians are the same way. Too cumbersome, and before you know it, elected right out of office!
The maker isn't responsable for the use of the tool, but the maker is responsable for the tool being safe to use and to do what they said it would do.
Not if you know that the person you are providing the tool with is going to do something wrong. If Jim walks into a gun store and loudly announces that he would like a shotgun so he can go kill his wife, you shouldn't sell him the gun. And if you do, you should be held responsible. Now, if you didn't have any knowledge of Jim's intentions, then it isn't your fault, I'll be the first to admit that.
Did Cisco know what their boxes were being used for? It looks like they did. Did they do anything illegal? No, they did not. But that doesn't mean that they aren't a bunch of fucking assholes for helping China suppress it's populations access to information.
That's a bullshit argument if I ever heard one. I hate to be the one to invoke Godwin's law here, but it 's the best example I can think of. You're basically saying that you wouldn't place any blame on I.G. Farben for supplying extermination camps with Zyklon-B, because after all, "freedom isn't taken away by companies, it's taken away by the Government"
Try TitaniumForceXP. Everything has the word Titanium in it now. I was ahead of that curve though, had titanium shafted golf clubs when I was a wee lad in the mid 90s:)
How is this interesting? We already know that not many people use Linux on the desktop, right? So why would all the people using Windows buy Linux games?
How do you figure that? Just because you said so? Linux is not superior in every way to Windows. It's better at some things, and not as good at others. Saying that it's superior in every way just makes it sound like you are talking out of your ass.
It's not the Soyo's fault. I'm pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong here, someone) that any motherboard with a keyboard power on feature won't turn off the power to the mouse and keyboard. That means most, if not all ATX boards.
Yeah, it's kinda funny how everyone else knew about this a before he did. It was on Slashdot, right? That's like God not knowing what's in his Bible, no?
Yeah, you'd hope it would work this way. But then you think about Jeb Bush's daughter, and where she would be if she was black and her first name was Charmaine.
When the Senator's daughter gets nailed for filesharing, it will be a "private family matter". When Jimmy down the street gets hauled in, it'll be time to string up the hacker.
Still, I really hope you are right. A law that everyone breaks invalidates itself and creates disrespect for every other law.
