  1. Welcome to the world of Income Smoothing on SEC Settles Microsoft Accounting Investigation · · Score: 5, Insightful
And before we crucify MS, every single public company does it. Investors and analysts don't like crazy up and down profits. They like the earnings line chart to climb up like a ramp if possible, and since that is what they like, companies will try to give it to them.

The real bad guys here are probably the auditors, since they are supposed to find stuff like this and make sure it doesn't happen. People in the know are aware that audited financial statements are just bullshit backed up by a promise that means just about nothing. There is still good info in there, you just need to really read between the lines and pay attention to what the company does not have on the balance sheet.

Exactly! I don't expect all the readers of Slashdot to agree, but the editors seem to have pretty much the same ideas. I'm know I'm not the only one to point this out, but the fact that they keep posting Star Wars stories right after condemnations of the entertainment industry is kind of like listening to Jimmy Swaggart preach on the evils of prostitution, no?

  7. Re:Disney needs a boycott on SonicBlue Ordered to Spy on ReplayTV Viewers · · Score: 5, Insightful
Yep, good idea. However, here is what will happen.

Slashbots will all proclaim their hate for Disney, and will refuse to buy Disney products, right up until Miramax or Touchstone or Hollywood Pictures releases a film they want to see. Then, they will flock to the theater in droves.

How else do you explain the fact that a quarter of the stories on Slashdot are condemnations of the entertainment industry, and another quarter of the stories are slobbering writeups about Sci-fi movies or the X-files?

Getting the credit card company to reduce your rates is a great idea, but bringing in a credit counseling service is not always the best idea, for the reason I gave above. I was merely replying to someone who said that credit counseling does not show up on your credit report. In many cases, it does, depending on what they do for you.

none of the maids, dealers, cashiers, plumbers, sysadmins, network engineers, programmers, waiters, entertainers, cooks, shopkeepers, bookkeepers, bookies, ticket takers, ushers, security guards, hairdressers, bankers, rental car agents, travel agents, or whomever that work in the casinos, restaurants, shops, stores, banks, or any of the businesses near the monorail are going to be using the monorail.

Look at the route, smart guy. The monorail doesn't actually go to where any of these people live. So, unless the people cleaning the convention center live at the MGM Grand or the Bellagio, this isn't going to be much use for them, is it?
