You know, that's how I feel about Europe. Holocausts, world wars, ethnic cleansings, etc.
There are few flaws in your arguments:
1. Holocaust happened about 60 years ago, along with the last world war (well, it also happened in the Pacific). I don't see why things that happened 60 years ago could be used as a reason to avoid Europe today
2. Ethnic clensing. That happenes in former Yugoslavia. I don't see why that incident could be blamed collectively on entire Europe.
PATRIOT-thingy is taking place RIGHT NOW in entire USA. In Europe, we had bad things happen decades ago, or we had bad things happen in one isolated area of Europe.
I'm amazed that you interpret a snide remark as "bitching and moaning".
Considering that we get similar comments every single time there's a typo in an article, yes, I would call it "bitching and moaning"
But then, I'm also amazed that a person that gets paid to be an editor doesn't. It'd be a bit like getting paid to paint houses and not bothering with the spots you can't reach.
Does the "cloth/clothes" typo somehow make this article less enjoyable? Does it makes it impossible for you to understand what is being said? Does it somehow make the article less interesting? I would say "no" to all those questions
If you want to talk about grammar and punctuation, go to school. This isn't school, this is/.
I'm always amazed by the amount of time and energy waster at complaining about typos in Slashdot's articles. Seriously: don't you people have anything better to do than to bitch and moan about typos?
no, don't answer that question. I think I already know the answer...
Well, I must admit that having icons stay at one size even though resolution changes _is_ a good thing. But the way this technology is demonstrated makes it look like that only thing this tech is good for is to make huge icons.
Every time they demonstrate SVG-icons they do it by showing enormous icons that take up half of the screen real-estate. Guess what? I don't want my icons to be huge! I want them to be small and tidy. Apart for visually-impaired (read: half-blind), why do we need SVG-icons? Why would we want humungous icons cluttering our desktops?
From everything I've read, it will only work with DDR 333 when it launches, putting it far behind the P4 already. Granted, it may be dual channel DDR (if we're lucky), but I don't think the current design works with dual channel DDR yet, but who knows what they have cooking in the labs.
Athlon 64 has 64bit memory-bus, Opteron has 128bit memory-bus. In fact, if you have multiple CPU's (for example two), the memory-bandwidth increases accordingly (in case of two CPU's it has 256bit memory-bus), thanks to NUMA (Each CPU has it's own 128bit bus to it's memory, but it can also use the other CPU's memory).
Officially Athlon64 (and Opteron) only supports DDR333, but according to AMD it's not difficult to use DDR400 instead. They just don't officially support it. It's the same thing as in overclocking. Intel and AMD use certain FSB-speeds, but it's not difficult to increase the FSB-speed-
1. CPU might be designed in such way that it does not need massive amounts of mem-bandwidth. Good example of this is Athlon XP and P4. P4 NEEDS LOTS of mem-bandwidth. Athlon XP does not need it as badly
2. Athlon 64 will have significantly lower latency and better utilization of the mem-bus since it goes straight in to the CPU, instead of through northbridge
3. Athlon 64 can use DDR400, giving it 3.2 gigs of bandwidth.
Wrong. Intel will soon be moving to a 800 mhz FSB, while AMD's brand spanking new chip will be stuck at 333.
Incorrect! Hammer does not have traditional FSB, it has HyperTransport-link. That link is equivalent to 800MHz FSB. Where on earth did you get the idea that Hammer has 333MHz FSB??? Athlon XP has 333MHz FSB, but Hammer is NOT Athlon XP!
Or are you talking about speed of the RAM? In that case: Intel is not moving to 800MHz RAM, they are thinking about using 200MHz DDR-RAM, something that can also be used in the Hammer (according to AMD)
The 3DO was INNOVATIVE, not one of the biggest failures. Geeeze.
Maybe that's why it is one of the biggest failures? I mean, it had huge industry backing, the specs were impressive, the games looked GOOD, the media was all over it. It seemed that 3DO was about to take over entire console-business. And then... nothing happened. It just went away. It never got popular. With all those games, with all that money, with all that media-attention... Nothing.
Generally it is better updated than any other, although you are right about Xfree4.2.
It seems to me that bigger and more important packages are delayed in Debian. Sure, some "yetnothercardgame.0.3.44" gets updated quickly, but heaven help us when it comes to something like KDE or Xfree!
I won't bother to check about KDE3, but I've heard complaints about it before.. I don't use KDE so I don't particularly care if it is included or updated.
Well I use KDE, so it matters to me. And Debian has been a major disappointment to me. I started using it because of the ease of installing packages and it being up-to-date. Yes, installation is still easy, but up-to-date it is not. That is why I'm moving to Gentoo. Installation is just as easy (I don't mind the compiling, in fact, I prefer it) and it's REALLY up-to-date! For example, KDE3.1 was available BEFORE it was announced at kde.org!
Outside those packages, *most* are well maintained and frequently updated.. much more than any other distribution.
Really? To me it seems that Gentoo is leaps and bounds more up-to-date than Debian is!
BTW, does Debian have OpenOffice? I really would like to know because I can't install it via apt-get. I would find it rather surprising if Debian didn't have such important piece of software available...
HAH! I run Debian Unstable. KDE3 is nowhere to be seen (sure, there are some unofficial packages available). when was it released? Oh, about 8 frigging months ago! How about Xfree 4.2? It took only about 9 months for it to show up in Unstable. So what was that about being "up to date"?
. I think the only thing I pine for is more low level interoperability with a few Gnome based apps that I like using: Evolution, Mozilla, OpenOffice.
Mozilla or OpenOffice has NOTHING to do with GNOME. They are NOT GNOME-projects. Why on earth people still make that mistake? Where did they get the idea that Mozilla and OpenOffice are somehow connected to GNOME??
Many workstation-class video cards take up multiple slots
But this is not a workstation card. They have Quadro for that, and it doesn't have that ridiculous cooling-solution. And as seen in the benchmarks, you can barely fit anything on the second PCI-slot! A NIC with no components on the back barely fits there.
What has been the trend last year when it comes to PC's. IMO it has been move towards small and quiet computers. FX in unsuitable for both. Of course 9700 isn't silent as well, but after listening to the sound-samples of both, it's clear that FX generates ALOT more noise. Honestly, it generates enough noise to be a real nuisance. Enough noise to make FX a no-show in my PC. Seriously, when I say it's loud, I mean it's LOUD.
And as to the heat. FX gets HOT. And even though it has that cooling-solution, alot of that heat gets released through the heatsink in the back of the card (which gets REALLY hot!) And usually the CPU is right next to the AGP-slot. So you will have insanely hot vid-card venting hot air directly at your CPU. Does that increase or decrease your systems stability?
No FX for me. I might consider NV35, assuming they get it right that time.
-It's huge (eats a PCI-slot) and noisy -It costs more than 9700 -It's not available yet -It has inferior AA and AF -When using AA and AF it usually loses to 9700 -According to Anandtech, it's minimun FPS is alot lower than 9700's (it even loses to non-pro 9700!)
I think the crunch test will come when Debian assesses the Helix server for eligibility.
Well, Real would then have plenty of time to sort out any licensing-issues. Looking at the speed of upgrades to Debian, this issue becomes relevant sometime in 2008 (about the same time HURD is officially released).

This morning when it snowed 3 inches and you can't go anywhere around here without hitting a nice steep hill
3 inches! was the National Guard notified? Surely a state of emergency was declared?
How on earth do we finns survive ALOT MORE than 3 inches of snow with our small front-wheel cars? If you need a 4WD SUV to cope with 3 inches of snow, I would say that the problem is not the car, the problem is between the steering-wheel and the seat. Learn to drive. Honestly.
We have -30 degrees celcius, loads and loads of snow, blizzards and ice-covered roads. Yet we do not need SUV's. Go figure.
Regarding 100 and 400 years of oil, my own best estimates are somewhat lower than that. My estimates are that we will experience shortages within 20 to 25 years
Isn't that more or less what the luddites have been saying for close to 30 years now? 30 years ago they said "oil will run out in 50 years!". 10 years ago they said "oil will run out in 50 years!". Now they are saying "oil will run out in 50 years!". I bet in 30 years from now they are still shouting "oil will run out in 50 years!"

Well, to me it says that only thing Windows is suitable for, is to act as a dumb terminal for UNIX ;). That's not really a high endorsment for Windows.
I have 6310i, and the phone is good and I haven't had any problems with the Bluetooth. So I fail to see your point
