10 years ago eh? How many websites ran on Linux 10 years ago? Or how about Apache? According to Netcraft, Apache had about 0% market-share back then. today it's about 65% and going up, whereas IIS is falling (currently at about 23.5%). Highest market-share IIS ever had was around february 2002, and it has been downhill ever since, whereas Apaches market-share is at a all-time high.
Linux mostly replacing Unix but that too according to netcraft( no I do not want to sound like the BSD troll here )is lowering in marketshare because the suits like standardization on MS and.net.
I believe you are mistaken. Or are you referring to the "5% of W2K3-install used to run Linux?"-news?
Government policies that close doors to competition are bad.
How are they "closing doors on competition"? They apparently have a set of requirements from the software they intend on using. One of those is that it must be open-source. Now, MS (or some other proprietary software-vendor) is free to offer them a solution that meets those requirement. If they choose not to do so, that's MS's problem.
It would be same if I wanted to buy a rear-wheel drive car. Would I be "excluding" makers of front-wheel drive cars? No. I merely have certain requirements I want from the car and all car-manufacturers are free to offer me their products. If they don't have one that meets my requirements, that's their problem, not mine.
If companies would hire him based only on his name then clearly that proves my point... that they would hire him for the prestige value.
No. It would be more like "Linus Torvalds? THE Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux? A REALLY kick-ass programmer? Sign here!". He would only need his name because he is so well-known and everyone knows what he has done and what he's capable of.
That's great that he had the ethics to tell his employer that he didn't have time for his day job, but it still proves my point. Transmeta invested time and money to hire him. Now they have to go through the inconvenience of replacing him, even if it's on a temporary basis.
What makes you think they are replacing him? They are laying off people as we speak. Besides, Linus and Transmeta parted as friends. Transmeta supports Linus on this matter, what right do you have to tell them what to do? Isn't it up to Transmeta and Linus, and no-one else?
It seems to me that you are never satisfied. If Linus had stayed at Transmeta you would be whining how he does not concentrate on his employer 100%. Now that he corrects the situation, you whine again. No matter what you do, it's always wrong, eh?
Right now, he got himself an academic position where he can do basically whatever he wants. Such is the advantage of being a cult of personality. Most of us don't have that luxury.
Most of us are not as talented as Linus is.
BTW, I'm not sure why I should be ecstatic.
Well, you seem to think that employees #1 priority in life should be his employer and his employers projects. And that is the case with Linus. His employers priorities are his own priorities right now.
That and because he's a top-of-the-line programmer. His resume could have nothing but his name on it, and companies would fight to hire him.
I'm 99% sure that he didn't do his darndest to give Midori Linux an edge up on the competition.
Linus didn't give Midori an advantage, that much is obvious. And he never claimed that he gave it at advantage. That was not his job. His job was not to work on Linux in Transmeta, his job was to work on the code-morphing-tech.
There was obviously some kind of conflict, as Linus cited vendor neutrality as one of his reasons for leaving.
Linus said that his reasons for leaving Transmeta (well, he didn't really leave. It's a leave of absense) was that he spent more and more time on the Kernel and less and less on Transmeta, and he felt bad because of that. Therefore it was agreed that he should focus on the kernel for a while.
And I never said that I wouldn't hire someone from a company that wasn't a success. That's just your attempt to twist my words.
You said (and I quote): "No, probably not [hire Linus]. Anyway, last I checked he didn't turn Transmeta into a big success story."
In other words: "Linus works for Transmeta, and Transmeta didn't crush Intel in the mobile-space. Therefore I must not hire Linus".
I said I probably wouldn't hire someone who wasn't willing to make their employer's success their #1 programming priority.
No you didn't, as you can see from the quote I provided. And as I said, the reason Linus left Transmeta for now was precisely what you described. He felt bad because he spent so much time on the kernel instead of Transmeta, so he left Transmenta for now so he could focus on the kernel. Obviously his actions with his employer were a concern to him. And now he works for OSDL, where he can focus on the kernel and nothing but the kernel. So his #1 priority right now (the kernel) also happens to be his employers #1 priority right now. You should be extatic. He seems to be exactly the kind of guy you are looking for. What he does on his spare-time.... Well, that's none of your business, now is it?
And Linux is a hobby to him. A passionate hobby. Who are you to say that "your job must be more important than your passion!"?
No, probably not. Anyway, last I checked he didn't turn Transmeta into a big success story.
Transmetas success or failure is not up to Linus. He's but a one software-engineer at the company. You wouldn't hire anyone who has worked at a company that for some reason or another was not a huge success? Isn't that kinda stupid?
With that attitude, there would be no advancement in technology. "Why improve this thing, it's already good enough for me?". With that attitude you deny yourself a whole world of opportunities. You might find out that yes, iPod is good, but there are even better products out there. Why settle for an iPod if you can get something even better for the same amount of money? Because "iPod is good enough for me". Seriously, that does not make any sense.
So in other words: You haven't tried any of the iPod-competitors, yet yo claim that they are no match to the iPod. How can you make that claim since you haven't tried them? Or are you just talking out of you ass?
No I wouldn't. I keep the damn thing in my pocket most of the time.
Even when you sleep? It really doesn't take that much effort to put it in it's charger at the end of the day. And I bet the charger does not take that much space, so taking it with you on vacation is not really a problem.
But hey, if you want a PDA with two weeks of power (is it just me, or are these demands getting more and more ridiculous? Next year people are propably insisting that PDA's must have "immersive, 100% realistic virtual-reality interface. Otherwise: forget it!"), then prepare yourself for a long wait.
Why? In everday use you would put your PDA in to the charger ever day. So why 2 weeks? for those treks through the wilderness? In case you get stranded on a desert island? Yeah right....
Well waah waah waah. If you don't like it, stay at home and don't watch the movie! problem solved! Fact is, Jackson didn't make a re-telling of the book, he made a movie-adaptation out of it. And there are bound to be differences. Just accept that fact.
What was this discussion about? Someone posted his reason for switching from RH to Gentoo. And his reasons were valid, I saw no problems with them. But apparently he's a "vocal idiot" because he dared to list few facts and.
Yes, if he had said something like "Gent00 ownz j00!" he would deserve a good flaming. But he did not. He posted a rational message where he mentioned his reasons to switch. Apparently that was too much for some.
What nesxt? someone mentions casually in Slahdot that "Well, I'm running [insert some software here] on Gentoo and it works great", and out comes the trolls with their anti-gentoo whining.
Why is ot OK to talk about Debian, SuSE, Mandrake, Red Hat, Slackware or some other distro. But the moment someone mentions Gentoo, the trolls emerge from their caves and start flaming and/or posting their stupid "Amazing Gentoo-Linux-Zealot Translate-o-matic". If someone say "BTW I use Gentoo and I think it's great", he's a "vocal idiot". If that same person said "BTW I use Mandrake and I think it's great, no-one would flame him. Seriously, why the anti-Gentoo sentiment? It's just a distro that has some differences when compared to some other distros.
To me, it seems that the anti-Gentoo idiots feel the need to defend their choice of Linux. They feel that Gentoo is somehow threatening to the status quo, and therefore it and it's user should be flamed.
Glaze3D was not fake. They had prototypes up & running but it suffered from overheating. So they canned the project, took the best tech from Glaze3D and started fresh with Avalanche3D. That project was proceeding well when Infineon (their fab) announced that they are exiting the eDRAM-business (which was vital to Bitboys). Infineon fabbed prototype-chips for Bitboys and paid compensaton for breach of contract. Bitboys took the money and went and designed this. BTW that chip is ready, and available for licensing. And they already have a customer for their chip.
Of course, there was Pyramid3D that was also finished and up & running. It had (among other things) rudimentary T&L and pixel-shaders. Years ahead of everyone else I might add.
Confirmed: This isn't about the cars themselves. This is about you being a flag-waving jingoist. "American cars are always superior to European cars!". Uh-huh. Heh you are really pathetic. "I know so much more than you do, so shut up!". Sad and pathetic. But like I said, go right ahead and drive your Dodge. No-one is stopping you.
Volkswagen-like Porsche? Good god man, are you blind or stupid (or both)?! you are seriously not making any sense. you whine that Porsche is no good because they have cooperated with VW (FWIW: VW makes cars that are alot better than equivalent cars made in USA). Yet you have no problems with a car that is made by a company that makes several crappy car-models. In one case, cooperating with "normal" car-manufacturer is enough to disqualify certain brand. But on other case, the fact that the manufacturer makes crappy cars is not enough to disqualify it. Double-standards, that's what you have.
But hey, who am I to tell you what cars to buy. If you prefer a frigging Dodge over a Porsche, then go right ahead. you have already proven your idiocy with your Porsche == Volkswagen-comments.
Oh for crying out loud... Both the Touareg and Cayenne are top-notch vehicles (that is, if you are in to SUV's). But you refuse to consider a Porsche because Porsche and VW have cooperated in the past and they co-designed the platform of one of their models? But you have zero problems buying a car from Chrysler, a company that has made cars like Neon and the like? Oh yes, some cooperation with VW means that Porsches suck (even though in reality, cooperation with VW is very limited), whereas the fact that most cars Chrysler makes are sucky does not matter at all?
Let's see... Porsche: some cooperation with a maker of "normal" cars: Big no-no! Chrysler: They actually make several crappy cars: Yes please! How's that for twisted logic?
I guess Ferrari sucks as well, since they are owned by (shock and horror!) Fiat? Bugatti and Bentley suck as well since they are owned by Audi which in turn is owned by VW? Of course, Audi sucks as well, eh?
Yes, they did cooperate IN THE PAST (VW made some engines for Porsche if I remember correctly, or vice versa)! And yes, Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg share the same platform, but those kinds of deals are pretty common and they do not signify any kind of deeped relationship. There is no cross-ownership between Porsche or VW, neither of them controls the other.
Ricer is someone who "drive around in an Evo VII ZERO FIGHTER finding idiots to burn off."
Mazda IS an established and respected sportscar manufacturer.
Mazda is an established maker of family-cars which occasionally makes some sporty cars as well.
how many WRC rounds have Porsche EVER won?
Zero, since Porsche doesn't do WRC. How many has Mazda won? I don't think Mazda is one of the giants of WRC either. And WRC has very little to do with the cars you can buy in the dealership.
Hell, Peugeot and Citroen have done really well in WRC lately, and I don't consider either to be serous sport-car manufacturer!
How many have Japanese manufacturers won?
Quite many. So? Does that somehow turn those makers of family cars in to serious sports-car makers? No. Like I said, WRC hyas very little to do with the cars they make for the general public
I find it REALLY strange that some people have hard time accepting that some others rank Porsche way above the Japanese manufacturers when it comes to sportcars.

cg is mostly likely biased towards NVIDIA hardware, so I would steer clear from it.

Reason enough for me to steer clear from it.
So? Socioeconomic separation is NOT a bad thing, poverty is. Is there more poor people in USA today than there were in the 60's and 70's?
Could you name some of this "proprietary stuff" RH is developing? No? that's what I thought....
