IBM has gone down the road of making nice, durable, reliable laptops. They are not "shiny" or "sexy" but they sure do last. I have a ThinkPad 600X (1999) that I bought used last year (leased to some big corp in town for 3 years) and it only has on problem, the modem jack doesn't work (you can see the disconnected wire). I am very impressed, and my office now only buys ThinkPads for the salespeople.
To bad we can't get that kind of reliability from our desktops (generic built to order from someone in Brooklyn NY).
Back on topic...
Apple ships 1/10 the untis Dell does, they should have much higher reliability than Dell, but they don't. And it appears (from BB postings) to be getting worse:(
Of course, when looking at the number of units shipped, you think Apple could have a little better quality control (Dell sells nearly 10x the number of computers based on % of market).
Microsoft officials said Tuesday the update -- which had been available as an option since Friday on its "Windows Update" Web site -- apparently was incompatible with popular security software from other companies, such as Symantec Corp.
Seems to me that Symantec et al should be the ones that have to fix their software. Nice to see Microsoft will pull it until this gets worked out. Maybe things are getting better...?
But success doesn't have to come at the expense of originality. The film industry has proven that point. In one hand we have Hollywood blockbusters that can rake in $100 million in a matter of days. In the other hand we have a robust independent film community that allows moviemakers to create smaller masterworks of imagination. Many of these films manage to find an audience due to the efforts of distributors like Lions Gate Entertainment - who gradually push their movies toward profitability. What if Miramax had told filmmaker Kevin Smith that no one would watch "Clerks" and suggested he develop a marketable teen sex comedy instead? Or if Artisan had told the creators of "The Blair Witch Project" to drop the film in favor of directing a Friday the 13th sequel?
Clerks and BWP are 2 horrible examples. IIRC, both were made, and then pitched to the studios. There was no real risk to the studios, other than advertising, which was kept to a minimum. BWP was the first, and still best probably, at using the internet community as its major word of mouth platform. A true independent film (IMO) is something made for a few thousand dollars (maybe 50 max), that might make it into the college campus theater scene, makes a few buck more than it cost, and everyone moves onto the next. Not everything is going to be BWP or Desperado.
Video games are now big business. They are becoming the same as the music, TV, and the movie industries. Big budget, bland, built to the lowest common denominator.
There are others.. it seems to be nearly 50% of Apple's products (not including iPod) are announced one month, and start shipping at least the following month, or even longer.
Then you have the other "fact" rumors, ala the G5...
The rumors game is fun, as long as you are not invested (emotionally or financially) in them.
You need to do more than kill them, or drive them out. Think of it is a security problem, and patch the holes. If you keep killing them, and they keep coming back, there are problems. For them to be living in your residence a few things have to available to them; easy entrance, food, water, and shelter. The last you can't do anything about, short of tearing / burning down your place. But you can patch holes, clean the attic, fix leaking pipes, remove pond from the back yard, etc. Overall, just make it un-appealing for the critters to live there.
Have you tried any professional services?
IMO, the sonic thing is a total scam. Many of my old customers tried that, and eventually gave up. (I got out of the pest control business in '97 or so)

Check out Brams musings on technology, drug use, and law, here.
That being said; should you still proclaim one of your aims is "digital piracy" given the current environment?
Thanks,

USB 2.0 is there.
Maybe so you can plug in Mac style usb keyboard with usb mouse that plugs into the keyboard...? Or for a wireless setup that only uses 1 usb port?

Right. A little brain fade there... sorry.
Don't forget nuclear reactors being temporarily plugged with a chocolate bar :-D

for more space junk? Lovely.
Increase in average... not enough to be worth mentioning. The string of 100 degree days is getting longer, which is fine with me. I love the heat.
I would say the difference is nowhere near 10 degrees during the day. At night, yes. Daytime only 2 or 3 degrees most of the time.

Never got over 114 in the shade when I lived there. In 56 years of keeping records...

125... uh huh. In the sun.
that with a small window a/c unit and you should be set. worked for me in Phoenix and Tucson AZ quite nicely (110 degree summers).
swamp coolers are not so good. you only get a change of 20 degrees or so, which sucks if it is 105 or so.
That and the fact that Corbin is a motorcycle accessory company (seats mainly).
Sounds like Apple to me...
;-)
Are they dying, or are they ok? I forget what the status is for Fridays...
So I guess it is Sony being Sony then...
Because Sony has to create their own thing. They can not use GC discs, that would involve giving money to the competition.
Kind of reminds me of a revised Mini Disc format.
Nice of you to re-state my original post in fewer words. Thanks :-P
I am sorry, I guess I missed the Apple announcement regarding the 970...
Just this year:
12" PowerBook
17" PowerBook
Dual 1.42 GHz PowerMac
Last year:
iMac

It is a redsign of the "shuttle launch system."
