  4. "well rounded education" on Is A "Well-Rounded" Education a Good One? · · Score: 1, Interesting

the ideas behind a "well rounded education" are solid.

"they" do not want us to be drones, so focused into one interest that we lose the abilities to interact with one another.

"they" want us to have multiple interests, so we can be "well rounded adults."

this does tend to cause problems, that universities are not eqipped to fix.

no matter what you go to school for, regardless of where you end up working, you will not be fully prepared. every business is different, even like businesses have different communities and different idealogies that no school could ever prepare someone for. (think office politics)

this could explain the rise in the number of technical schools. things like specific training, lifetime job placement, small class size and others are very attractive to prospective students.

is this the best way? for some.

    for me? no.

but this is America, and we have a choice!

most of you do realize that if there is a Mastercard/Visa symbol on that debit/bank/check card that it can be used as a credit card (i.e. no PIN), right?

with my old bank, Bank of America, it saved me money to use it as a "credit card" when buying gas, snacks, strippers, or whatever. every time i used the card at a non-BofA terminal and entered my PIN, i paid a fee! i think it was $1.50US. my sis used to work at Wells Fargo, and it was the same story there.

thus, the establishment _FORCED_ me to save time in order to avoid the fee :)

  12. Re:OS of the Future on Red Hat Reports (tiny) Loss, Revenue Slip · · Score: 1, Informative

The problem with OS/2, besides that it sucked compatability wise; Microsoft. M$ wrote most of it for IBM, than the deal went sour and IBM was stuck re-doing it, in typical "BIG BLUE" fashion (throw 1,000 programmers at it and hope...)

M$ had done so many cheap write arounds for the code to work, IBM was stuck scratching their proverbial asses trying to figure it out, while watching Gates go from millionaire to billionaire. Unlike M$, IBM wanted it to work now, not do the M$ "ship it now, fix it later" style of programming.

It is sad to see alot of parallels in the history of OS/2 to the current situation with Linux. M$ had no real competition at the time, so they could get away with it. Linux on the other hand has an entirely different situation, they are David, amd M$ is Goliath.

    Good Luck Linux,

    Right on!

But how many of my fellow Americans can figure this out?? We seem to forget that we are _NOT_ the center of the universe. Just because we change what we do does not mean anyone else does, or even cares for that manner!

Once the general population figures that one out and starts to think _GLOBALLY_, then things have a chance of being "fixed."

Until then, we should discuss things, and hope that we (as a whole) don't get duped into doing something irrational, expensive, and useless.

  15. Re:What can be done? Nothing. on More On Tragedy · · Score: 0

I think the FAA and other federal agencies are starting to think in the proper manner. The security measures to be changed right away are definitely a step in the right direction:

    1. No carry-on luggage.
    2. No curbside luggage check-in.
    3. No luggage check-in at hotels.

Number one is a great thing, no we don't have to wait so long to get off of the plane once we get to our destination.

Number two is fine, I personally don't trust curbside check-in. The only time I have ever lost luggage was when it was checked-in curbside.

Number three is good too. I don't need to wait longer at a hotel to leave because the counter person's are busy dealing with the airlines business, luggage.

Of course, this is a rather lazy society. We hate to wait; if things are going slower than normal, most people complain. Usually without understanding why, or feeling any compassion for those trying to get the job done. With these first new security measures being implemented, lines will be longer, and so will the wait. And what do we get? A better chance of making it to where we planned, safely, and in one piece.

I think we should applaud those who are trying to make things safer for us, and help them to do it better.
