    In a 'real' publication, these editors will all be fired long time ago. So I'd suggest, fire timothy.
    Or, at least, cut the editor's salary by one day everytime he or she posts a dupe, false, or a scam like this.

    Slashdot really needs some competition.
    I hope someone will start a 'fork' so that we can all move over. Then slashdot might finallly do something, or become 'stuff that doesn't matter'.

    This is not a common usage of "top down" and "bottom up".
    What is "professional space" exactly?
    Why is that "top", compared to "desktops"?
    I don't think that these days desktop CPUs are slower/lesser/'bottomer' than server CPUs.
    Maybe that's true for motherboard, hard drives, or even ram, but not CPUs.

    actually, IQ was "defined" as the score of the IQ test.

    The problem with Mensa is it's too easy to get in. So I'd say it's selective enough. Top 2% is a lot of people you know. So at the end most people in this 2% just don't bother. If they had made it 0.1%, membership would be more attractive.

    But, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/Blu-ray/HD-DVD drives don't matter in servers. The only use for such drive is installation. (And I think some servers don't even bother as they can install from network.)
    For installation, usually CD-ROM is good enough. If not then DVD-ROM is definitely sufficient. Do we really need an OS image > 5GB ?

    This is assuming that you don't enjoy your work.
    Otherwise, there's no point to distinguish the home office. I'd prefer a life where I can't differentiate work from leisure.

    Because of US's dominance in science and engineering research, the best PhDs are found in US.
    All the best college grads of India (usually IIT) come to top US grad schools for PhD.

    I'm not sure if there's any significant academic science/enginnering research in indonesia though... it probably won't be easy to find 200 'mediocre' phds there.

    But these days research labs in China are feasible, because you can actually attract the good US-PhDed chinese to move back there.

    Leaning stuff from books and Internet is boring. Learning stuff from a teacher with other pupils can be fun.

    Only true if you're not smarter than your teachers.
    I'd say this is not case for most slashdotters.

    I think you just envy your coworker's 17in powerbook. As someone else mentioned,
    it's always desirable to have bigger screens.

    But, it's also interesting that apple
    decides that 17in is the highest-end model.
    If you check out the Asian brands, usually
    their small notebooks are more expensive.

    Btw, even the 12in powerbook is pretty big
    in Asian's standard. I can never understand
    why they'd like to include the (99%) useless
    CD/DVDOM drive in a 12in notebook.

    I just checked the spec. Like most other
    SFF, it has only ONE internal 3.5 storage bay.

    A small LCD isn't much heavier than a notbook anyway.

    Actually... engineering is not "HARD"...

    If you really think that the engineering math is hard, try to pick up any upperclass math or physics textbook. The difference is another order of magnitude. Even theoretical CS's math is harder than
    any engineering math (but still easier than pure math).

    I love that it is completely silent - this was in fact why I started with a laptop in the first place;

    Your laptop doesn't even have a hard drive?
    I'm not aware of any completely silent drive.
    And as far as I know, most laptops have small fans
    to dissipate heat.

    Several traditional characters can be mapped into a single simplified characters.
    The set of simplified chars is much smaller.

    Actually, i doubt that you can find a dvd-ripping professional easily.

    er... but SVCD's image quality is much worse than DVD. It's also worse than DivX/Xvid.
    And, I'd assume that you can't mix in an AC3 or DTS track either?

    This is not funny. You (and those moderators) are just ignorant. There are Chinese handwriting input systems for many years. For example, Penpower has a software for Palm so that you can just write chinese characters with your stylus.
