    Would you cut off your nose to spite your face? i.e. would you use a standard non-proprietary format to make yourself feel good even though it meant you couldn't interact with anyone else?

    Most people won't - they need to do their job, not fight some petty non-existant OS-choice battle.

    What a truly ignorant point of view. Boo hooo, the public don't understand how to use Linux, that's their fault. No - if Linux wants to successful on the desktop, it needs to satisfy the public's needs. If it's being written by a load of arrogant wankers (which I'm not saying it is) who think the public are 'stupid' for what they want, then it is toast.

    The fact that we have undermined a terrorist network and overturned a repressive government in weeks, with only a handful of American casualties, has transformed the way even Americans think of technology.

    I think this is called 'having aeroplanes whilst the other side have camels' - not really much to do about high technology - the Wright brothers would have kicked their ass.

    If they put some thought into it they could get what they want... Modularity.. Make it possible for me to buy video-ram, system ram, make add-on's available, granted that makes the "all systems are the same" for the programmers go out the window... but if I had the ability to switch from standard video chipset to the ultra-insane-fast $399.95 video upgrade option that adds the physics module for jiggley breats to the fighters in virtua fighter 73, then dammit I'll buy it!

    Don't be a dick. That's called a PC. Consoles are successful because they're based on a static hardware platform.

    Silicon Valley was the place to be and could well be again. Being around all those other hardcore developers in the late 80's and early 90's, was so exciting and brilliant for my professional and personal development.

    We also had some great parties out there - anyone go to those - bet you've all got some great stories.

    My guess is that the "poor sales" they referred to were actually poor sales of Windows (ie. only 99% of Dell PCs were shipping with Windows, as opposed to the 100% that is required in Gates's "competitive marketplace").

    If its weightlessnes you are after, wouldn't it be a damn sight cheeper just to put a plane into a dive and float arround for a bit..... as in an astronoughts training.

    Hmm, yeah, maybe except using that method, you only get 10 seconds at a time of weightlessness, which, even if you've just met the girl, is not enough time to reach the 'mile high, and floating in mid-air club'. Any guy knows that 3 minutes is plenty of time to do that and try weightless cigarette smoking...

    So DON'T BUY IT. That's your right. It is NOT your right to go out and steal this stuff you feel is overpriced. If everyone decides similar, prices come down. If everyone doesn't, prices stay the same. If a significant minority go out and steal, prices go up.

    I can produce audio tracks in my basement with the same fidelity with less than $10k worth of equipment now; I can burn CDs and distribute myself; I can HIRE my own advertising agency and yet still retain the rights to my own music without the interference of these media conglomerates.

    So you go and sign up those big bands with your magical facilities and sell your CD's for a dollar fifty.

The /. geeks may not have the balls to go and rip off a CD from a store but let them download the MP3's from the net in their sweaty rooms and there's no stopping them. Human nature eh?

    I wonder how much code there will be in the software handling this file system which reports back to M$ what your browsing habits are, or maybe there will be measures to prevent you making back up copies of copyrighted materials.

    No one speaks of subroutines that cp themselves through undocumented remote procedure calls because talk of 'computer viruses' carries all of the portent and weight of polio, anthrax, German Measles and tuberculosis.

    Yeah, no-one speaks of the exact way all these illness viruses work either since it's easy to abstract it out to a simple term 'virus'/

    And exactly what percentage of Linux users have 'written' the kernel? Some Windows users wrote the kernel for that, can we not call them half-wits either?

    Umm, the AI lab already had their computers. We might have paid for them to set up, but we probably didn't pay much extra for RMS to work there. Same with most people. If you already have a computer, you don't need to pay for it.

    A market stall-holder would be a pretty mean bastard if he complained about someone taking a grape before paying for it wouldn't he? But what if everyone did it? What if the labs are full of people using the computers, so no-one more entitled can use them?
