  1. Re:md5sums on Firefox 2.0 Posted a Day Early · · Score: 1

when talking about the md5sums of the last releases you wrote "For their last two RCs, both have been identical to the final version"

Doesn't this imply that no code changes occurred- in which case, there would be no point in releasing another RC and should just go to the final version. You implied that there were no changes from RC2 to RC3 and again no changes from RC3 to final.

It wouldn't surprise me if RC3 was the same as the final (identically, md5sum speaking), though it wouldn't surprise me either if they released it with a word spelling changed or some other trivial bug they knew to be fixed by a simple patch.. But what I'm saying is, if RC2 is the same as RC3 is the same as the final, then RC3 was superfluous.

They do have a monopoly, but your being forced to buy windows is really not entirely due to that. The reason you specifically have to buy windows with a Dell is because the vast majority of people who buy PCs want Windows because the vast majority of people want windows for whatever reason (visits from MS-Guido notwithstanding)... It's a catch 22- however MS got to its position (whatever you think of them and/or their tactics), they now have a self-reinforcing monopoly. They've supplied the right tools to the right people, made the right deals, and the people want windows, because the developers want windows, because the people want windows.... and on. Basically, they have to royally screw up to lose this monopoly. You'll have to buy windows with your dell until enough people decide they don't want to, and microsoft will have its monopoly until that time- regardless of how many EU/US/(whichever countries want to supplement their budgets) fines are levied. Unless MS bankrupts, they're on a mesa that is tough to reach (again, by whatever means) and hard to be knocked off of. For all people hate ms, they've done some very smart things and made a few pretty good products- but in short, either get a few several thousand of people every month to stop buying windows or just get used to it.

The bottom line is ultimtely, the Triple-Play should dissolve anyway since once enough people go VOIP, there's absolutely no reason to pay for POTS termination, a service provider, or anything. By that time, someone will have simplified the asterisk implementation enough to not only put it on a WRT54GS (already done) but also make it simple to configure (not so far off).. Anyway, sooner or later, there will be no point in paying a provider for telephone service. I can't wait for POTS to die a horrible death (though hopefully not before uber-reliable internet)

anyway, actually, between being locked to a CPU/mobo, I'd much rather have a dongle. Then I can only use one machine at a time. The dongle could be special and only allow you to only change machines once a month- eg the drivers update it with a hash of the last machine's ID.. so then you can change things up, but just not waltz between machines.

While not about radioactivity, this is related.

Funny enough, I was microwaving a bowl of soup yesterday and some sort of gnat-like bug flew in as I was shutting the door and I didn't notice until I saw it flying around while the microwave was running. For several minutes it just kept buzzing around like nothing bothered it at all. My only other experience with microwaved creatures was when I was young and a rather large spider (tarantula size) that had had me hunting my room for hours was finally caught- suffice it to say, he didn't fare nearly as well in the microwave. For the record I've not nuked anything else (poodles for instance) since. Anyway, as this little gnat buzzed around, I wondered how he could possibly survive in that environment.

Sometimes, against all odds, things survive where they shouldn't, and for no apparent reason. The miracle of life?

I live in a town where the city built its own power plant (eg no PG&E/ConEdison/whatever) and not only is it a high temperature (higher than normal) coal plant which is basically non-polluting, but we get our energy pretty much at cost. Even with our AC running 24/7 in a poorly insulated duplex during summer, our bill was never over $96 for just the electrical portion.

We also have a waste-to-energy plant as well, it's not plasma, but it works great and doesn't stink or anything.
