  1. Translation? on MP3 Dead? What, Already? · · Score: 1

Can someone translate the phrase "MP3 is not scalable" into English? I have no idea what it means or why I should care.

I have free MP3 encoders and decoders on my hard drive, so the minimum entrance requirement of any new format is that the encoders and decoders must be free. If that requirement is met then the new format may proceed to prove its superiority.

  2. Nerds without basic math skills on Empeg in March · · Score: 1

I really think people who can't count should refrain from reading slashdot, the topics are likely to be over your head.

A quick look through the archive shows that two stories on the empeg have been posted. Both were links to news articles about the empeg (Slashdot News for Nerds, remember?). You were off by forty, which makes your percentage error 1000%.

Now, readers may have mentioned the empeg when commenting on other stories related to mp3s, but you can hardly hold Slashdot accountable for that.

  8. NT file sharing has some advantages on Kernel Musings: Unix and NT · · Score: 1

I use both NT and Solaris at work and there is something to be said for NT's file sharing.

On Solaris I can set my files' rwx permissions for everybody, but since I can't create or modify groups I can't have any finer grained control. I either grant a permission to everybody or nobody. If our company was more geared towards Unix support I suppose I could make a phone call to an adminstrator and get a group created or modified eventually.

If I want to share a file or directory on NT I can make a list of people who I want to have access. I can give read access to some people and write access to others on the same file. I don't have to have any special privledges, I just right click on any file or directory and select peoples' IDs and grant them each whatever permissions I want them to have.

Furthermore, NT's file sharing is based on *people*, not *machines*. My Solaris machine is on the network full time and my home directory is on a server. I can share files because other people have access to the same server. This wouldn't work for a laptop. If I want to share a directory on my NT laptop I just right click on it and turn on sharing. Whenever I'm on the network the shared directory will be visible to the specific people I granted permission.

If I had Linux on my laptop I'd have to NFS export the directory. That would require knowing what machines are likely to be used by the people I want to share files with. On NT if I grant "fred" access to one of my directories, "fred" can access it from any NT machine on the network as long as he logs in a "fred". If "fred" normally logs in to a machine called "tophat" I could export an nfs mount to "tophat", but if "tophat" died one day and "fred" went over and logged into someone else's machine he wouldn't be able to nfs mount my directory from that machine. He'd have to call me and ask me to add that machine to the nfs exports (which I couldn't do even if I were in the office instead of at an all day off site meeting, I'd have to call an administrator).

I've started ripping some of my CDs with cdparanoia and bladeenc, but I haven't really organized the resulting files. How do those of you with huge collections deal with them? I just have them all in the same directory. I go to the playlist (I use GQmpeg) and add all.

It would be really great if there were some kind of database interface that would generate playlists based on search criteria. Kind of like the Windows softare for the empeg car player.

A lot of people on slashdot act as though they have hundreds of mp3s, so some of you must have come up with a good system. Tell us about it.

Well now I have a second machine networked to my main machine and I know better.

I'd finally gotten XFree to the point where it didn't crash, but I just installed KDE and run the kdm_on script because I heard it was better than xdm. Well about 50% of the time when I exit X my machine hangs with vertical red stripes on the screen. Not only do I lose keyboard and mouse access, the nfs exports no longer respond, the machine doesn't respond to telnet, http, ftp, or even pings.

If kdm doesn't crash Linux it does a damn good impression. At least a BSOD gives some information about the crash, Linux just goes down hard.
