You could do thais in the early 80's on a c64... Ever listened to a tape drive lading a game, paused it inserted code (free lives, etc) and resumed loading...

Man I thought Slashdot was for CURRENT news ;-)

But seriously, why? Why do something like that? ...

    Damn, some inventions are pointless.

  4. I run into the same thing on Network Attached Storage on a Budget? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    But, consider the electricity costs:
To run 4hdds, you need a old 486/P1 (previous post suggestion), hence a 250W+ powersupply.
What is the amount of storage space you gain. The most you can strap is either 4*8GB (without special drivers), or if you find newer board 4*30GB.
Chances are you have smaller drives, hence the first estimate is more correct.

Does it pay to strap them in, use untill they die, lose data in the process and waste electricity..
Well, no, unless you want to do it for a 'geek' factor here.

The truth is, the older the hardware, the less reliable it is, the more you are prone to loosing data. And with a 120Gb drive hovering around $300 (CAD) dollars, why even bother.

Get one of those, add to an existing workstation, leave it on. Voila, cheapest solution possible, and not a lot of work required.

And believe me, I am speaking from experience. I have had a p-166, p-200 and cel-266 all die on me within weeks/days, doing the exact thing you are looking to do. Then I got my current server duron-850, with a nice new board, and I have had no trouble for almost a year now.

    just my 2cents.

    Or should I say capitalism.

Well, that's the price you pay for living in the States I guess.
I wonder how soon, the rest of the free world will want to 'rescue' US from their oppressive government.
I find that ironic, while the government touts and preaches the American Way (TM) as the True Way (TM?)..
You know no opression, free speach, etc., to every other nation in the world, they turn around and take that away from their own citizens.
    Irony at its finest.
The worst part is that they will probably try to blame it on Terror(ist)s using VCRS to communicate or something...
Just my 2 (not so informed) cents.

I propose a change: Let the goddamned lazy editors go find their own stories. Its not like they post the relevant ones at any relevant time. Mod me down to oblivion. I really don't care. Why would I bash? I got a PS2... can get linux on it no probs.. Guess what SONY makes it for me, how convinient. Games are good (I had the box for a while, FFX etc. didn't influence my decision). I can play DVDs.. So no hdd... Can I say I don't care? Right, except for extra swap space, it doesn't really do much in the Xbox anyways. This and the Xbox has no titles worth mentioning, no HALO is not a good one either... To me it looks like a mediocre PC FPS. and as far as I am concerned thats where FPS belong anyways. But what do I know. Flame away. But to be on topic: unfortunely MS is right here, they do have an EULA for the SDK that prolly requires royalties, I am quite suprised this only happened now.

  11. Linux factor on MPAA to Senate: Plug the Analog Hole! · · Score: 0

Well, this is just about the only case when I am happy that Linux has not became a mainstream (read everyone and their dog uses it) OS.

Think about it: if it has then RIAA et al. would be after all OSS media players etc. to comply with their 'legistlations'. However, since the platform of 'choice' is M$Win, other OSs are not the main focus, hence they can still stay free and open.

And besides how can they possibly ban non-'encrypted' analog devices from being made? I mean I am probably as screwed as everyone else (I live in Canada, so States impact me directly) but places like Europe, Asia, etc. How is the States going to tell them you can't have their (read RIAA) content? Not sell to them unless they comply. Fat chance.

They should just move on and maybe invent something useful rather than screwing their 'user' base, well user according to RIAA, since you really don't own anything you spend your hard earned cash on...

Yea, politics, so nice that those that we chose to put in power work for us (in any country)..

Here in Canada we have the second iteration of a TV show called 'Popstars'. Basic premise is that a group is formed thru auditions. They don't get to be original, all is given to them, they are just puppets 'singing/dancing' on stage... Its just wrong.

And then good artists go unnoticed.
