while I'm not a fan of AT&T, and even happen to agree that filtering port 25 would be a blessing... It does seem you're a little over focused here, and the parent poster may not have any influence on that particular segment of the business. Whether we like it or not, AT&T and most ISP's aren't mom and pop operations where one guy handles the entire security department, billing, and drives the rusty van to come out and check your router.

Generally speaking if you've got a problem with an AT&T network, filter the particular networks at your border and get over it. That logic applies to any ISP or network. Really! If enough people start filtering networks their service becomes useless and changes have to be made. Do you honestly think AOL went about changing (some) of their ways from the goodness of their heart or as a reaction to all the *.ipt.aol.com blocks put on large network borders.

THIS is the kind of bullshit that needs to be stopped. The answer is really clear. Let these people know how you feel about these cheap shot political tricks. If they don't listen, fire them on election day. That's how it's supposed to work, but for some reason nobody bothers to tell these people why they've been fired!

How about if they fixed things they're made aware of and put them on some kind of automated website that end users could get to with a couple of handy clicks. Oh yeah, they wouldn't use it. Hrm.. ok.. lets build an application that checks this stuff automagically and has the ability to patch it. Oh damn, the geeks of the world don't like background processes so they'll tell their gramma to turn the damn thing off.

Damned if they do and damned if they don't in my opinion. If somebody doesn't patch their machine (and are too stupid to realize it by THIS time) they don't need a computer yet. It's time the actual *users* were educated by the geeks, not just told "[don't]do this or else." I teach my kids what not to do and WHY they shouldn't do it. Cool thing is that I can go to their machines and find them relatively malware free. Sure, they're kids and they do stupid things sometimes, but they've got the tools to clean it up and the realization that it's a machine, and the internet isn't exactly a warm, happy, fuzzy place where everyone looks out for your best interests.

USERS!!! Microsoft just made the tools, the users didn't follow through with their obligation to keep it up to date. Yes, they screwed up, but the end users screwed up MORE.

Agreed, it seems that sometimes the people that scream the loudest about the value of blogs are the bloggers themselves. While that's all well and good, they certainly can't be considered an authority or even unbiased. I have a small blog myself. Oddly I don't give out the links, it's more for my own use. A couple very close friends know of it's existence, but since I'm a technogeek, and I spent the time setting up MT, I figured I'd use it for something.

I also agree that most people don't care about my pitiful life, nor do I care about as you put it, what their cats did today. On the other hand, just today alone, I noticed a "Spider Blog" in some posts here on /. and strangely... I've been looking for the posts with the continuations just to find out what the spider did!

I don't deny that people have the right to write whatever the want (for the most part) and even publish it in print, radio, on the web or whatever. I just don't think blogging has become such a force in the world that it's going to change anything in the long run.

Bear in mind, I just replied to your post out of convenience. Nothing should be considered a flame or directed at you in particular. It's sad when you have to put disclaimers on everything, even /.
