And that's fine. But when someone does fuck up, they need to be held fully responsible
I believe that in today's society that is a very real and very reasonable statement. One can't do greater harm trying to prevent another. That's why the people doing this have to do it properly. I still don't think it's wrong that they do it, but they have to use their heads in the planning stages and have the ability to say "whoa, we might be wrong here guys."
huh? I think I understand what you mean... but honestly if these folks are smart enough to figure out how to deface the site, they're (presumably) smart enough to chase down the netblocks and other information to confirm that Chase-Manhattan bank probably isn't hosted by a small time hosting company in one of the varios *istan countries. I'm also pretty sure that Paypal et al doesn't host their server farm on wanadoo (for example)
Sometimes we can careful ourselves right out of existence. *MOST* reasonable people can grasp the blatent criminal sites. Those that can't should be dealt with as they don't have the restraint needed to be a good "white-hat." Honorable intentions or not. ok, so after said coalition issues the "flag" card number, they tag it as stolen or whatever they have to do to mark it as such. If I remember correctly the card company's can notify vendors via response codes on the machines that a card is stolen or otherwise worthy of getting law enforcement involved.

How is it possible to find out who you are downloading from (not who is proxying), using Freenet ?
I just shut down my freenet node because it wasn't able to reliably retrieve anything in under an evening so does it really matter if freenet is anonymous if little to nothing actually flows on it?
Maybe I just haven't given it a lot of effort in trying to get it working right, but with the standard references it couldn't do jack (very well) and all those instances of java damn near killed performance on my system.
This discussion got me looking at freenet again since...well.. it was running on one of my systems. My node has been up and running for several weeks now, one would think that the generic bookmarks would at least be reachable. They aren't. In fact, I managed to get to TFE which claims to be the olest living Freenet index, and tried to actually browse for content. I couldn't. *EVERY* page I tried to browse came back as unreachable, yet according to the status page I had many.. many MANY inbound and outbound connections. Sure enough I did. Apparently for the past several weeks I've been donating my processor time and bandwidth for the benefit of *somebody* lord knows it wasn't me. I don't mean to sound overly selfish here (and I know I do) but if I'm going to do something like this, I'd at least like to see *SOME* return on investment. At this point I have to correct something I stated in my previous post. Freenet has provided *NO* return on my investment. Therefore as of last night I have terminated the node and abandoned Freenet now and in the future. It was a fun experiment and now it's over *smile* Good luck guys.
I think some crazy data warehousing company will start selling datasets of privacy "color" choices cross referenced by sex, height, weight and general location. (ie: young fat women in Biloxo Mississippi don't want you to know she's only 5 feet tall and can't drive because she can't reach the pedals. Opportunity: short people's electric bicycles with high amperage motors to handle the extra weight)
No no no no no. I've never once felt that Dvorak should get any more attention than a dog shit stain on the sidewalk of life.
I don't care if he reported that the MS v Linux wars were over and Amiga won. He's a putz, but very good at being a putz. It's what's kept his stain on my goddamn sidewalk for 20+ years.
Let's hope they got permission or nobody from Florida Today reads Slashdot. *grin*

I've left a node running for a week with much the same results as the parent. As a matter of course, the default bookmarks still don't load and even browsing the "oldest portal" takes a significant amount of time to generate.
Additionally it's placing a whopper of a load on bandwidth and CPU/memory utilization.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but very little ROI given my experiences. I don't think I've strayed very far from the norm, aside from that I've actually left it running for a week to see if things improve. The average user really isn't going to do that after waiting an evening (yes an entire evening) for a page to load.
Further, watching the logs with tail is showing a whole bunch of java exception errors. Ok, I'm not a java developer so I dont know much about that, but it is a level of concern for a potentially long running process.
This isn't flamebait either. I'm trying to be diplomatic and honest at the same time. That's not often an easy proposition.

until a police officer sees you taking the keys out of a car and charges you with theft.
"Officer I was going to take these keys to the police station" probably won't be seen as honesty in many instances.
