You're right. It's insidious. Personally I've got one of those MCSE things that my company paid for because some PHB thought we all needed them. No one here is going to do what you're talking about because we all understand how useless these things are (Microsoft Certifications) but a lot of people in a lot of places probably will take the bait.

When I went to the classes it's not like they were 100% propaganda or anything. More like 88% but I have to admit I picked up a few things that have been helpful. Still in terms of dollars spent per useful item learned they're a joke.

None of this addresses any of the things that people really had a problem with regarding their licensing scheme. None of this is going to make a bit of difference to our shop. We're getting open source alternatives lined up and mapping out our "Escape from Redmond" plan with the idea of getting it done by the end of 2003. This simply couldn't be less relevant to us.

It will be a story that somewhat resembles the one from the series but has the correct feel to it. Direct comparisons are insane in this case (just like they are in the LOTR movies).

I also prefer Nero when I'm burning in Windows. I'd say using the Wizard it's probably easier to use than EZCD but then I'll grant you that the first time they want to do something that's not covered with that Wizard then EZCD has the edge.

Reliability though and the coaster vs successful burns I always prefer Nero. Usually when I'm burning something I'm on my Mac though and there I'd say Roxio has a pretty good product and the Mac's no slouch at burning all on it's lonesome.

I'm hoping Apple gets this Windows version out there asap. It would be nice to see them be the first to do something right and then actually get to capitalize on it's acceptance by those unwashed masses. Hopefully the record labels in their paranoid glory will be slow to try anyone else in this and Apple will get the time it needs to get the other 90 some odd percent of the world connected to their budding money machine

I'm still at a loss to explain why they didn't get that Windows version ready to go from day one though. That would have been amazing. If the Mac users pulled down a million songs in a week (and even then it was only the OSX users) and were able to get that much positive buzz about their numbers then can you picture what it would have been like if a Windows client had been available from the outset? What would people have been saying if they had cranked out ten million songs in the first week?

Nothing anyone sends you gets through by design. Then you add the addresses you are willing to accept mail from and mail starts being accepted from those Every time you need to start getting email from someone else you have to add their email address before they start sending. Colossal pain in the ass yes but I'd be more than willing to pay for one completely spam free mailbox no matter how much trouble it was. I bet a lot of pods out there would be willing to spend some money for that too.

  19. Re:Download AND Pay? on The Law and P2P · · Score: 1

Allow me to clarify then. When I was a kid I bought records. It's possible to play that record until it starts to sound bad. You've paid for the songs but your lp is no longer what it once was. When I was a kid I bought 8 track tapes. 8 tracks and later cassettes aren't exactly what I would call "sturdy" and even if many of those 8 track tapes were still sitting on my shelf in pristine condition I'd have a hard time finding a player for them today. Again I bought songs in a format that is either no longer supported or on a media that didn't last.

Regardless I paid for the songs. CD's made all the difference and I've got darned near every CD I've ever bought and they sound as good now as they did then. Now I've got files and I can back them up perfectly and don't expect to ever see the day I want to hear a song I've paid for and can't play it and I don't have pay for a CD with one good song on it and 9 other tracks of crap.

The filesharing services are the way people wanted to get music. The Apple version combines that with actual revenue for the companies that produce music. It's finally what I consider to be an fair and fully equitable relationship.
