That is a simplsitic argument. I guess that the way this works is that there is some kind of encryption scheme in the software itself and that the only key to decrypt is somehow embedded on the media itself. Each piece of software is particular to that disk, so you might be able to copy it (of course if you can read it you can copy it!), but you won't be able to bypass -- easily -- whatever encryption scheme they have.
Just my 2c.
The reason this will fail is the same reason why nobody listens to car alarms anymore. The face recognizion will go off so often that people will start ignoring it. Making it even a dangerous way of ensuring security. (Just like car alarms)
His name is Carlos Slim, and he actually owns the only Phone company in Mexico -Telmex- (there is another one Avantel, but they only offer long distance) and he owns as well the biggest ISP (Prodigy) and as well is the major head at CompUSA (funny: CompUSA is actually a Mexican company!).
To close the circle look at the Prodigy website! Now the relationship between Slim and MSN is clear and that this whole thing is being played by "special intersts".
This story was previosly reported here. It seems thet the COS has been messing around with Google for a while now. Read the letter here and some more here. And i tough old stuff was rejected by the/. editors, just beacuse it makes the NYT, does not make it slashdoteable.
Well that's what i meant on the first place! (the only reason i continue to write in english is so everybody else can understand).
I didn't mean to undermine the validity of the project (or the goal of the project for that matter) I just think they are taking the wrong path choosing microsoft as the provider (and taht that descisions was probably based on personal interests as saddly has happened before not only in Mexico but in the US as well) MS is like a two sided sword, TRUE: it is easy to use and adminiter and it can quickly become a headache not only for security reasons but because people will only be exposed to MS (and they as individuals won't get the huge discounts the eMexico program is getting).
And as side note you shouldn't judge the Mexican population of the US, not everybody are sons and daughters of daddy and mommy, the truth is that some of us have had it really hard> If you judge that easely you are just like people here in the US that judge quickly Mexico or other so caled "developing contries". And at the end you become what you profess against. Nobody should use the word hate so easily.
I am here not for the American Way of Life, (the one you seem to be living since you seem to make assumptions in less than one second) I won't try to confuse you with facts since you probably made up your mind already about Mexico and me.
But if there is something i detest is "American" the mainstream.
If you want to post in a smart way try this: THINK before you judge, THINK before you post.
As a Mexican residing in the US i have to say this:
It does not surprises me for to reasos:
The right-wing governmet lead by the ex-Coca-Cola executive Vicente Fox that loves interviewing and meeting with his friend Bill G.
Second: is a nation where most (not everybody thank god )computer knowlegable are "yuppies" that would never think of other OS than Microsoft. That is beacuse the common people don't have enough buying power to acqire PCs so that "world" is left to the semi-rich.
In conclusion, and ironically, is in nations like Mexico where MS can find a great niche because of poverty hopefully this won't continue, hopefully Linux will come to the rescue....

And just as i don't need somebody else to tell my what OS to use or what to think i don't need somebody else to tell me what globalization is and what is not. Globalization will be different for, you for me, and for everybody that is affected differently by it. That is why a one sided, non-objective, patronizing note like that one has no space on a form that tries to be democratic.
Regardless of whether i'm pro or against globalization i don't think that this quality of jornalisim is the approiate for this form.
And forgive me for my english since i know is not great
Sorry pal, but people from India are not called Indians (Polish are called Poles but people from Holland are not called Holes either). Indians are Hindus, even though not everybody practices the Hindu religion....

PS Holland people==Dutch people
I just wan to add my 2cents (even if this thread is never gets read!):
1.- Making money is a good thing.
2.- Abusing people and ripping people off is a bad thing.
Many people confue the order of those two principles and:
1.- They hate MS because they rip people off (think of this any way you want it: Bad/Expensive Software)
2.- Many think that if any royalty is given to the programmes they are just as bad as MS.
And finally, please don't fall into being fanatics, one thing is to don't liking the MS buisness model(and attitude) and software and other is to be so CLOSED to the degree of being obtuse (don't you see that if you an obtuse fanatic you are only the guy on the other side of Bill Gate's mirror)

How about another approach? Do I have to be a musician to enjoy music?.... Do I have to be a carpenter to sit on my chair? "
That is just rethorics, we all know that the answer is of course not. But is it helpful to have musical education to appreciate music, yes. Is it important to know the basics of how your car works so you do't get ripped off by a mechanic: yes.
I don't believe in being elitist (nor in judging people by a single post of being one!) I belive in KNOWLEDGE, I belive that if we all have to learn to read and to write and to how to use a car and how to deal with other people and how to behave in specifuc situations we all have potential to learn.
And big institutions depend on the limited knowledge of the indivudal. That is why each time i stumble with a person that needs help with a PC, insetad of just fixing the problen i try to teach them not only how i did it but WHY the problem occurred. That's why each time I reply to a post attacking my character I try to be polite and not judge the other person at the end of the line.
PS I _volunteer_ at a local high school as the tech administrator and i do training for teachers, just so you know more about myself before making up your mind....
I don't know if 80 000 000 people on AOL is really "on line". It's sad to see that as technolgy advances 'the people' remain in obscurity (ie.: in the hands of companies like AOL and MS) and it the comptres are still mystical boxes not to be tampered with. It makes me think that this headline in a dark ages newspaper would be:

No, #1 will be the net. Without it, search engines are a lot less useful.
What about people pirating and selling fake thumbs?
