    Due to the nature of emulation, PearPC is quite slow (the client will run about 500 times slower than the host).

    I use Windows at work too and I've never owned a Windows box. In fact I've never owned anything with an x86 for that matter - I started off with a Sinclair Spectrum so I've had plenty opportunity to get one too! My current home computer is an MDD dualie which I'm posting this from using links via ssh whilst at work...

    The MMX multiply and add instruction is PMADDWD. It takes 3 cycles on a PIII or Athlon and 8 on a P4.

    So.... If you are running MS IIS your best security measure is to pretend to be running Apache?

    That does seem to be their suggestion. When I found a company that was using IIS the advert changes to:

    Protect your Web server identity with ServerMask!
    Why let anyone find out you're running a Microsoft IIS server? Don't tempt potential hackers!

    A shining endorsement for IIS - obviously Netcraft are under-reporting all those sites that are ashamed and/or afraid to admit they are using IIS!

    I had one last week at work with XP Pro. Some little speech bubble popped out of the task bar telling me that I wasn't using my desktop shortcuts enough and would I like Windows to delete them for me. Fuck no you prying OS - if I want to delete them I'll delete them. Then a few minutes after dismissing the dialog it pooped (heh! made a typo but I prefer it this way) up again asking the same friggin question! Cue a wasted five minutes tracking down the option to turn off this retarded feature...

    Other examples:

    o Do you want to use MSN Messenger? - No! I'm trying to do some work!
    o Your disk looks full, shall Windows fuck around with all your files? - No! I'm doing a build, I am creating temp files, I know I have enough space and I don't need son of clippy telling me what to do!

    Happy at home on OS X where this kind of crap doesn't happen.

    Should have bought a UPS then ;). Seriously Apple are marketing filevault as a means of securing data on laptops and not hiding your mp3/divx/pr0n/Al Qaeda Plots collection from the feds.

    Laptops are more vulnerable to casual theft and may well have confidential data on them - MI5 had a rash of stolen laptops a year or so ago - so encryption there makes a lot of sense. Of course a laptop with a fully charged battery has it's own UPS which is nice.

    It makes no sense to use IBM's SPECmarks as the basis for comparison because IBM's machines are different and more expensive. IBM also uses different compilers, compilers that don't come with Macs.

    IBM's C,C++ and Fortran compilers are available for the Mac - download them if you want. And since a PPC970 is a PPC970 whether it is in a Mac or an IBM it does make sense to consider IBM's SPEC results.

    But with the iBooks the resolution is the same whether you go for the 12" or 14" so in your case you would not see any more music sheet area. That is why the 14" is a waste of money - get the compact 12", save money and get a sharper screen.

    One thing I've always liked when flying BA is that the inflight magazine haa 'top trumps' style descriptions of all the aircraft in their fleet - from little things that fly to the scottish islands up to the normal jets and then Concorde.

    Sadly since Concorde is gone so too will be it's description. The engine stats amused me the most. The smallest planes would have props then endless 2/4 turbofans on Airbuses and Boeings. Concorde's 'four afterburning turbojets' certainly sounded well overclox0red in comparisson.

    Kernel32.dll is not the Windows kernel - that would be ntoskrnl.exe. Kernel32.dll contains the Win32 functions.

    OSX uses BSD userland apps (that way nobody will try to make them rename it GNU/OSX)

    The main point about BSD with OS X is that there is a BSD personality sitting on top of the Mach kernel rather than the apps. Of course having the BSD personality means it is easy to build and run BSD apps and Apple provide many. However there are some GNU apps there too and not just gcc:
