It should be noted that the initial proposal by Japan to meet its Kyoto emission targets was to install an additional 20 nuclear plants. This caused a major outcry and stimulated increased attention to Space-Based Solar Power. Importantly, the prices for electricity are sufficiently high in Japan that a workable Space-Based Solar Power system might be developed with launch costs much higher (1000 $/kg) than would be feasible for North America.

My feeling is that we are a long ways away from optical computers. Optical computers are envisioned to work in a fundamentally different way than the current manner that photonic systems such as telecommunication systems operate. The way telecommunications systems work right now is that they are electronic systems that are linked by devices that generate photons (a laser), that transmits photons (an optical fiber), and receives photons (a photo-detector). In these cases, the generation and detection of photons is an electron to photon to electron conversion process. When people speak about the prospects for optical computing, they are usually speaking about photons switching photons. This would require light itself to activate an optical switch. Thus, basic logic functions such as an AND gate would have optical inputs and outputs and would not involve an explicit photon-electron-photon conversion as discrete components. That is a lot harder to do. Electrons have charge and mass and they interact in a fundamentally different way than photons can, which have no charge and mass.
I don't think Microsoft is selling the address... I think that there are spammers out there with software to randomly scan which address are there. If you ever look at the header, many times the message was sent to all and any addresses that are similiar to your own account.
Since hotmail has so many users, it is an easy target for this scanning activity.
>You can see this thing sucking the breath out of a small child, can't you?
Is this supposed to be a reference to the Cat's Eye movie from the 80's? If so, he's got it wrong... the cat protects the small child from the troll that is about to suck the breath out of the child. It's not the cat doing the sucking.
Did anyone else think that it had Star Wars overtones? For example, the space bar with all the different aliens and the taliban... i mean suliban pods... that looked like imperial fighters without the wings.

They will be using the new Land Warrior system for soldiers which includes a weapon called an OIWC and night vision googles.
Check out the game "Delta Force 3: Land Warrior" for what this system includes and for first hand experience using it.
I've previously used a FreeBSD box and NAT which worked great but it did require a bit of my time to learn how to set everything up.
Earlier this year I purchased a Netgear RT314 and I must say that I've not had problems with it and it does what I need (which is not much, considering it's just for a home network of 3 workstations sharing a cable modem internet connection).
If you've got the time or the desire to learn, I suggest setting up an old PC with NAT. If you just want something that's quick and works, get a $100 to $200 router.
Notice that if you are planning on using an old PC you have to get a hub or preferably a switch, so why not just spend the extra cash and get the combo router and switch (like the Netgear RT314).

Yes, I think it important to not forget the other side of the story. Terrorism is an aweful thing and should not be tolerated but there is undeniably a reason people would do these horrific acts. The goverment and media keep saying this is an attack on democracy and these terrorist people are jealous of our way of life. I think this is misleading. Americans should not be sheep, falling into the prevailing mob mentality and wanting to attack anything and everything that may be considered as threatening to the American way of life.
I am experiencing the same problem at work except that our boss IS big on planning, no quick hacks, but his code and the way he plans the code is old school. My boss is a previous COBOL programmer who doesn't believe in the benefits of object oriented programming. It is at the point were all our major projects are becoming a nightmare to deal with.
Hey, why don't they combine this with the universal individual ID number (mentioned in a previous recent slashdot article) and somehow implant the code in peoples foreheads!? They could make it manditory for rich and poor alike!

Retaliation on a large scale is trouble. Can anyone say WW3???
There are no winners here. Retaliation will only make things worse.
