Could you imagine the possibilities? You could store lots of large photos. You might even be able to use the little hard disks to create little portable pods which carried digital music. Perhaps they could get music from the internet and we could call them "internet Pods."

Well, one can dream. Until that happens there is absolutely no way to store high resolution photos on a camera.

If you're concerned about loosing valuable data make duplicates of a disk. That's what I tend to do.

Moreover, having even larger disks would make that process a LOT more efficient. I'd much rather make multiple copies of a few large disks then multiple copies of dozens of smaller disks.

No doubt, putting all your eggs in one big basket is dumb, and putting all your eggs in multiple little baskets is a better thing to. Yet, if you can make copies of that big basket all your huevos are going to be pretty damn safe.

  4. Re:Film on 111-Megapixel CCD Chip Ships · · Score: 4, Interesting

    Yup, viewing distance is important.

If you're doing something for a small print piece you want a high DPI (ie 300). If it's a poster you can use a lower DPI. If it's a Billboard you can use a significantly lower DPI.

I'm a graphic designer and I recently committed the industry's cardinal sin the other day... I had a comp printed at Kinkos. I was printing a fairly large bus shelter poster that was 150dpi. The newb behind the counter had the audacity to bitch about DPI, even though (I would imagine) it was fairly obvious that I did this for a living.

If you're developing something large in Photoshop you do -not- want to play around in 300 DPI. People read those things from a few feet away and, I don't care if you have a new dual-core dual g5, you do -not- want to wait for a 30x40in bitmap to rotate on a multilayered 300 DPI document.

That said, high res photography is important. You may only want to highlight a small piece from a large image, and you can't do that unless you have good source material.

Wow.. double the price for non interlaced video!!! What a compelling feature! AND they toss in dynamically updating DRM for FREE. Sign me up!

But seriously, screw BluRay. I think Sony is seriously overestimating the influence of the videophile. At least in this country (the US), most people don't know HD from a hole in the ground. It's -so- rare that I actually find someone with an HDTV that's actually using the damn thing properly... even if they have access to content.

Heck, forget HDTV, just look a widescreen TV in general. How often to do you see people watching ugly a** stretched content because they simply want to fill the whole display and avoid vertical letter boxes? You'd think if people actually cared about picture quality they'd refuse to watch an episode of 24 where everyone is short and has giant fat heads. But nope, people view TV like that ALL the time.

But in 'merica most people just want to see sh*t bigger and on a flatter screen. What's actually on that screen is a different story.

Good luck on selling everyone on 1080p. Perhaps one might find a market with the 20 people who have 5.1 DVD audio collections.

An if my undergrad psyc classes serve me correct, it is absolutely possible to become addicted to something that is not an ingested chemical of some sort. It's not like you experience a video game, sex, passively. You're brain released serotonin, dopamine, etc through experiencing things.

That said, to become addicted to something like a game or sex you usually have some other problems in your life. You usually need to be set up for an addition like that. At least that's what Dr. Drew would have me believe while I'm listening to Love Line while being a workaholic at midnight.

And even if this does lead to a private company eventually developing a procedure or medication for a serious illness, we'll can deal with pricing fixing and patent abuse if it arises.
