Please. Don't be so quick to nitpick. I agree with you 110%.
I was trying to say that it would be technically impossible (at this point in time) to quickly develop a speedy, low cost , reliable solution to move PPC native mac software to AMD hardware.
Man, sometimes I feel that half the people that post here are "Nick Burns: Your Company's Computer Guy" (mooove)
No doubt, however one can get the same motherboard in a G4 case for the same (if not less) amount of money on ebay. The only benifit I see to these machines are the extra drive bays.
First off, most mac users have known that their platform has been behind the curve (in processing power) for a few years now. I don't know why you'd have to "try to tell" Mac zealots this. Mac users use Mac's because of the better usability, better UI, better hardware integration, etc. I could care less if my new Mac is 8months slower then a new Windows/Linux box.
Secondly, the 970 is far from vapor. It was first presented 6 months ago and they are now rumored to be falling off Hon Hai assembly lines. Not only was the PPC970 announced well -after- AMD and Intel's consumer 64bit solutions, it will most likely be the first 64bit CPU to appear in consumer desktops and laptops.
And finally, what good would an Opteron be to Mac users? Although Cocoa apps could probably be recompiled for a different CPU with minimal headaches, Carbon apps do not port well. Apple would have to create an emulation layer for Carbon apps. It would be a nightmare, it would take for ever to develop, there would be countless software incompatibilities at first, and Mac developers would throw a hissy fit. Shess, we're still coming out of a -major- OS migration.
I could go on and on about why an Apple AMD box would be technically impossible at this point in time...but hey, just trust me, ain't gon'a happen. The PPC970 is a smart move.
Woh, as of a few months ago the finder didn't handle FTP shares properly (you could only browse a parent directory). Now it seems to work perfectly. This must have been fixed with the 10.2.4 or 2.5 update:)
If it were not for this post I would've never noticed this. (now let's see if SFTP works:))
I'm sorry, but that high of a resolution on a 15in monitor seems kind of idiotic to me. Everything would be tini-tiny, it would only be good for watching DVDs.
Dell should of produced a 17in 1440-900 laptop like Apple. That'd be a hell of a lot cooler.
Now when I walk into my office my development environment loads up, my CVS directories auto update, my email gets checked, my instant messenger signs on, and my address books sync up. It's quite handy... and it ain't no kiddy toy;). It's the best 10 bucks I ever spent.
Moreover, considering that I keep a desk and computer in my room, this software makes watching DVDs, watching DIVX movies, listing to music, etc a lot easier to do from bed. Nothing sucks more then being half asleep and having to get out of bed because you've decided that your tired of the movie you started.
I've actually seen this happen before.

I've actually seen this happen before. Placing a laptop, cell phone, pager, etc in the oven on 'warm' is a good way to dry it out if you get it wet (a hairdryer also works). With most ovens it is possible to keep your laptop warm enough to allow water to evaporate, yet not so hot that it melts.
However sometimes people take this little tip too far. They decide to speed up the process (which should actually take hours) and they end up with broiled-notebook-surprise.
Will this console play other console's games?

I know that Nintendo currently allows third parties to build their own machines on the GameCube platform if they wish (ie, Japan's Panasonic Q). As I recall Sony might also be open to third parties as well. They were in a lot of talks with folks about emulators no to long ago.
These guys could simply be selling a single expensive console that will play stuff that's already on the market. That'd be kind'a cool
My old Apple// had a handle on the monitor as well and the computer itself. Moreover, that thing came out well before that Compaq you linked us too.
But seriously, who cares about who pioneered the computer handle?
Some of the folks here are simply trying to say that Apple's PowerMac cases offer a combo of accessibility, portability, and style that no one in the PC world has been able to duplicate.
I know that when my PowerMac is no longer functional I'm probably going to gut it and save the case for one of my PCs. It's compact, it has a door, it has WiFi antennas nested in handles that don't really look like handles, and it not ugly and boring.
Man... I HATE VeriSign. They've recently allowed a large number of my company's domains to be hyjacked TWICE within the last 3 months. (and yes all of our contact info and passwords are secure)
We're now getting started with a criminal investigation (I'll probably send the details into Slashdot in a few weeks). VeriSign is a horrable company. They are insecure, they have a pathetic legal deptartment (only about 3 people), it is nearly impossible reach anyone aside from tech support, etc etc. VeriSign makes MicroSoft look like an angel.
Most Mac-rumor sites seem to think that Apple is going to drop the 15inch iMac in favor of the 17inch. I highly doubt Apple is going to stop selling both the 15in and 17in iMac. The LCD iMac does not seem to be another "cube" for Apple... this product has sold a -lot- better.
Slashdot needs to leave stuff like this up to macrumors.com, macosrumors.com, or thinksecret.com
wow... this is scary. I hope microsoft doesn't buy macromedia and then drop, or lower the quality of, support for Mac users within a few years. The day that microsoft forces me to use Windows for multimedia development I'm going to go nuts.

Ya, seriously. Porsche Design made this? It looks like a plain 'ol ThinkPad. They could learn a few things from Sony or Apple.
Come on. This is not America 2.0. We should let Iraqis write their own copyright and property laws after they have established a basic government.
Moreover, do we really need to start thinking about this right now? Iraq doesn't even have proper water, power, and food.
Dude... it's unix. Seriously.
I can call a cat a dog, but a cat's still a cat.
Damn, I could slap that thing together for a couple hundred bucks. Who would seriously pay 1400 bucks for that thing?

Ya, Pleeeease Apple... come through on this one. I miss the good 'ol days when Mac were fast
So is this how the Borg are going to come to be?
It's based off of a comic... not that show.

I know. However for 3G's I should get a few iMovie updates
Considering that ATI has a new card coming out soon, I doubt nVidia will get to be king of the hill for very long.

dotster anyone?
So, wait... I pay Apple THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS for a Dual G4, and I STILL have to pay for iMovie?
Wow, I thought I was nerd...but after seeing that, I think I'm not to bad after all.
