Desktops do benefit from a RTOS. RT makes it so that the system purposefully downgrades less-useful things like buggy apps that go into infinite loops for maximum priority things like, say, user input.

As for taking data from various sources, well, Second Life supports HTTP, XML-RPC and Email communications with external servers.
You are welcome to bypass the "social experiment" as you term it. God knows there is no shortage of corporations developing project for other corporations in Second Life.

Since when does Linux require any training? It's not any different from Windows. You must be used to dealing with megacorps where unionized people refuse to do anything outside their job specification and there's lots of money to spend on frivolous "training" courses, which are usually just an excuse not to be at the office and work.
Training? What training? How about "If you're too dumb to work with what we give you then RTFM on your own time or we'll find someone with a bit more initiative"?
My non-technical girlfriend installed Mandrake Linux on her own as far back as 2001, simply because she liked the cool wallpapers, screensavers and minigames she saw on my computer...

People don't buy stuff in SL to get an ROI. They do it to be entertained, have a pretty avatar, a pretty house... disposable income.
As long as some people have a need to create and others have a need for entertainment, stuff like SL will succeed.

  5. Re:Just another market for commercials on Live Music in Second Life · · Score: 2, Informative

Nobody forces you to listen to the stream. Streams in Second Life work on a per-parcel basis. Meaning, if you're on someone's land, you get to listen to the music they chose. If you're on your land, you get to listen to whatever you choose. In addition, streamed music is off by default, so when you're flying around you won't switch from stream to stream all the time.

I can tell you one thing - BBC Radio 1 is only streamed in WMA and RAM.
Second Life supports inworld audio and video streaming, but not in these formats.
You can set an URL as a property of a land parcel, and people on that parcel will get the URL from the server to stream from it on the client side... but it will only read MP3 and OGG streams.
The way I got around this was by launching the user's browser... which is a horrible hack, but it was the only way.

I'm not an MD, but what's likely going on is that you're building some odd muscle or two in that area. Muscles play an important structural role in your body - they're actually holding you together, just like your skeleton does.
This structural role is often negated in skinny people who lack enough lean mass, as well as people with an excessive body fat ratio.
So bulk up, people, or you'll be at an increased risk of sprains, back pains, etc.

When were you last on? Animations abound everywhere, and if you think Poser's hard to figure out, maybe you should just hire someone. That's usually how things get done in SL - as a team. Great way to network.

SL is any geek's wet dream. You can freaking code your own TCP/IP stack over SL comms, or your own RPC platform, or your own
For a distributed systems geek like me, it's the ideal place, since programming in SL is inherently distributed. Plus you can make money off your skills if you're in college or between jobs...
I spent last summer coding a distributed, fault-tolerant, banking/e-commerce system, tied into a MySQL database with a website that had quizzes and stuff, and the website quizzes messaged the game world over XML-RPC where 3D ATMs paid you game money. It's nothing to be sneezed at, and in fact Linden Lab has been promoting the "platform" aspect a lot more lately. Definitely not just a "game".

Studies have shown that living a healthy lifestyle decreases your likeliness of getting depressed even if you are naturally prone to depression. It may be a chemical imbalance, but your body can easily be teased into manufacturing more of the chemicals you need to stay mentally balanced. Exercise often, even if you are already within your normal BMI, get plenty of sunlight, keep a normal sleep pattern and force yourself to be more social. My personal experience has been very positive, but of course YMMV, and if your condition worsens or fails to improve SEE A DOCTOR.

There's always a tradeoff between memory use and CPU comsumption. If it's simple to do and has enough impact, maybe they should let the users decide?

Your post is what serious researchers call "anecdotal evidence", which is grounds for immediate dismissal (see also: correlation != causation). Studies suggest that, ON AVERAGE, smokers have a greater likelihood of contracting some rather serious illnesses than non-smokers. This does not mean that EVERY smoker will contract illnesses. My grandfather was also a heavy smoker who lived happily until the ripe age of 82, and he didnt die of anything related to smoking.
Some people are stronger than others. Some people can probably tolerate all sorts of toxins a lot better. For all we know, there may even be a gene that causes immunity to tobacco and related toxins. The fact remains that anectdotal evidence, while interesting, isn't the same as controlled research, and doesn't detract from it in any way.
