I would also like to know why Slashdot is suddenly pandering to the Silicon Valley crowd by moving the servers to the West Coast, leaving us Right Coasters with high latency and slow connections (than usual, I mean).
Well, it's only fair, after you Easterners complained about how boring the World Series was because there were no New York teams! BTW, you guys missed an INCREDIBLE series!!!!
Get a nice clear glass and pour yourself a glass of tap water in southern California. It will be a nice milky white colour, but if you let it sit long enough it will clear.
That's aeration, not chlorine. However, there is definitely an aftertaste, but it may depend on your plumbing.
Same with Major League Baseball - it's run by assheads, too. The only way to fix the stupidity here is for the whole thing to collapse under its own weight so it can be rebuilt under new ownership.
I had a problem with PacHell (SBC). For some reason I couldn't auth. Because I use a Linksys, I ran a sanity check by calling the dialup. No joy.
I called their tech support, and got someone who didn't freak out when I told them I was on a router. I told them I understood I wasn't a supported config, and explained that it was dialup as well as DSL (so the router wasn't at fault). She said that she really couldn't support me, but did what she could with that config (namely reset my PW).
For some reason, my password entry got corrupted in their DB, and the password reset worked. I thanked her and went on my way.
It's incredible that even the cable companies are too dense to realize that trying to sell someone a service by *reducing* its value is a losing strategy.
Why is this so hard to believe? Some of these cable companies *cough*AOL/TW*cough* are members of the RIAA, who seems to think that selling crippled silver disks with music on them is a good idea.
Oh, I agree. But this thread was due to the original post commenting, "granted, a dollar a song is too much if you want the whole album".
If you want the whole album, just buy it. That way you get the CD to rip and the cover art/liner notes/whatever. If you don't want the whole album, this is what people claim to have been asking for.
It's not that I stop finding Dilbert funny, but I read a strip and am overcome by the icy grip on my heart of recognising that it depicts a situation that actually happened in my company
This actually happened. We were a shop doing embedded development hosted on a Unix platform. We got a contract to do ActiveX development for NT. I told my manager it would take XX man-months plus 4 months calendar (learning curve). I was actually told by my manager's boss to "work smarter, not harder". (I should have quit right then, but I have a wife, 2 kids and a mortgage).
Guess what? The project took exactly 4 months longer than they bid it. Surprise, surprise.
At my former job, we were a defense contractor. Specifically, my department did artillery control systems. We had institutional knowledge as to how artillery control worked that even the frickin' ARMY didn't have.
The type of PHB that Cringely discusses would look and see highly paid older engineers and swing the axe, losing all the incredibly valuable knowledge.
Of course, I got an email from a friend who still works there... apparently they are now out of the artillery business... I guess the PHBs were there.
So you'd pay more for the album by downloading it??? That was my point. If it costs $15 to download a whole album (see the OP), then just buy the fsckin' thing.
The next election is in 2 weeks (5 Nov). He's a Rep., so he has to stand for election every 2 years. Unfortunately, Hollywood (or at least Universal Studios and possibly WB -- I think) is in his district, so why would they get rid of him?

Sam Beckett vs. Capt. Archer

You know what they say... "Big muscles, small dick."
Don't laugh. Read The Cuckoo's Egg by Cliff Stoll. They actually had someone do this.
That's why I posted *BOTH* lines.
Let's hope Senators Hollings and Berman are paying attention.
Since when did Senators Hollings and Berman give a shit about the concerns of the general public?
Berman's not a Senator, he's a Representative (Representative of what, remains to be seen).

Maybe, but the good guys won this time.
Nope, they'll just chalk it up to the Evil Content Pirates(tm).

... who was bought by Prodigy... does AOL own prodigy now
Nope. They're owned by SBC.

The last two lines are from the movie only. The first three are from the novel.
The original concept of the Star Gate was a hole in Amalthea (Jupiter V). See The Lost Worlds of 2001 for more details.

rnd() is correct.

granted, a dollar a song is too much if you want the whole album.
Then if you want the whole album, go out and buy it! You can then rip it to your hearts content.
Dude, were you at MCTSSA?
Maybe they were talking ohms?
Yes, but not until the next election (obviously).

So could I legally DoS the RIAA, MPAA, or Disney because they might have unauthorized copies of my works?
Which MCC do you hate? 8.1, 8.2 or 9.0?
I'm just having a bit of trouble adjusting to the 9.0 version...
