Klink, I understand where you're coming from with that comment, but really that's not valid. Why? Because you can falsly the same comment/argument to many aspects of "Human Controled Devices" on a platform such as a ship. I worked for 13 years on research ships, and believe you me - the most important thing in my book was that the guy/gal behind the wheel, the crane, or the off switch on the device I was working on was more important than anything else.

That said, here's the falacy: there are tons of (good) rules and regulations about the control and safety of devices those humans are using. And a smart ship doesn't just hire someone to fill a role RE your "former NT administrator" comment.

So, I guess to conclude, I gotta say "Hmm, that's a good question!" (which means I don't have an answer). HOWEVER, I gotta say if you're on a ship or any other environment where you can't just call the SA guys on the phone and have 'em drop in to help you out, you'd better have a really failsafe system, AND you'd better train your crew so they know and respect the computer system much like any other mission critical device on the ship. You don't want the ECDIS to "go offline" when really it's the guy not knowing how to turn the monitor back on.

    Dear Sirs:

Due to the fact there are laws protecting the use of military insignia and
due to the fact your membership has shown absolute lack of respect for those
laws and to the veterans and current military personnel who have earned the
right to wear those insignia, I am asking that you implement the following:

    1) That, in the future, if any of your members or players choose to
participate in your on-line combat game, that, as a rule, they will be barred
from playing if they use the official names and insignia of military units
    and divisions.
    2) That a disclaimer appear on your website making it clear the use of these
insignia and names are in violation of the law.
    3) If any member or player has used your game to discredit, disrespect or
misrepresent any of these military units and divisions, that they also be
    barred from participating.

These requirements will only enhance the on-line game experience and will
also eliminate any possible law suits that might be filed against your
company for the illegal and unauthorized use of military insignia. They will
also enhance the on-line experience in that they will further educate and
honor those military units that you represent in your game.

I thank you for your attention to this matter.

    Sincerely,

    Marsha Sears

So what she's basically saying is, she wants us to make the players of our game stop using any kind of military insignia/unit name in their online names. She's also been emailing various DoD "clans" asking the same thing. As you might expect of flame ready teens, some have started bombarding her with some pretty interesting (as I'm guessing) responses.

Now she's writing to us (the DoD Team) and Sierra (who we have ZERO connection with) asking us to make them stop emailing her.

    Sheesh!

So - thank GOD for that website. I feel like we're not alone anymore after having it to read!

Why? Because it won't be. Sure maybe some people will run "legit" servers, but you know darn well that "pirate friendly" servers will rapidly come online. The net is full of people more than willing to put up huge amounts of bandwidth and disk space for illegal material.

Face reality, money talks. It talks ALOT. But I think it (money) should be spread out to the "little people" on the net, not to the "big mega corps". How can we take the idea of "the paying internet" and make it profit the RIGHT people not the WRONG ones?

OK, so here's my thesis. The way the internet is set up now, your average Mom & Pop shop that could and should profit from the internet can't. The little sandwich shop down the street from me should be able to have a menu online where they can take orders, and it should work. I should be able to use the internet in my town here just like I use my phone: call my barber for an apointment, call in the pizza order, check the store hours, etc. I don't care too much about mega-corps making money on the net, but I do think the Mom & Pops of the world should be able to profit off it.

OK, that said, what if internet use were modeled after telephone system - where "local" browsing was free, and "long distance" browsing cost something? Then all of a sudden instead of being served up the vast eden/wasteland of content that the web is, your average user will be steered to surf LOCAL content. Suddenly, there's huge incentive to create that content. Huge incentive to create USEABLE and USEFUL content. Now the local Mom & Pop will want to put up a website that WORKS for the COMMUNITY. And people will USE it! Imagine if you really COULD order that sandwich from the place down the street from your office, then walk down and pick it up. "Prank" security becomes a minor issue for one thing - after all, who's gonna pay to make long distance crank phone calls?

Now I'd assume that companies can still run "toll free" websites so you can still surf the greater world. After all, who's gonna pay to surf Yahoo?

OK, so this is not perfect and has horrible holes in the logic, but the fact is you're never gonna beat the big corporations.
