For all of you in Oregon and there abouts, check out the da Vinci Days KSR event. It's coming up this summer in late July. It's been around since around 1993 and is going strong.
These races (and the racers) are quite fun. A very entertaining group of artists, engineers, and nut cases:^)
I suppose camping is a derivative of Cheesing here.
Personally, I'm a camper. I like dark maps, dark corners, boxes to hide behind, etc. And I just love catching the same person 3 times in a row in the exact same spot. They spawn, run into room, I get them from behind box. They respawn, run into room, I get them from behind same box. They respawn, run into room, I get them from behind same box. Then they tell me I've got no skill:^)
Kinda bothers me how many people are on here being total Trolls. Me? I'm no fan of the right, of fanatical believes, etc. But I am a fan of being open minded, and being open to let others enjoy their beliefs without ridicule, as long as those beliefs allow for others.
I guaruntee you that for every pompous putdown and ridicule based rant here you'll find another in some "religeous right" forum that you'd gleefully quote as to say, "See what jerks these guys are?". So who's the "deluded fool" then I gotta wonder? Who's more closed minded?
To quit using a database that a LOT of people are using with no problem because once you had a problem? Sheesh. Also better give up on driving your car (i've seen cars fail), walking (i've seen people trip) and eating (i've seen people choke). Oh and don't turn on your computer - i saw one crash once!
There was an interesting comment made at the recent Game Developers Conference in the Serious Games Summit. Someone was asked what would be the equivalent of the DARPA Grand Challenge as it related to game technology? The answer described a scenario that went something like this...
"You and your team walk into the DARPA director's office with a globe. You give it a spin and ask him to randomly choose a place - some country/location. You go back to your office and get working. A week later, you give him a 'game'. He runs it and finds himself 'in' that location he picked. He hears the language, sees the sites, hears the sounds, etc. He plays this for a week. Then he actually goes to that place. When he gets there, he 'knows' it already because you've really taught him."
Personally I'm sort of tired of all the "cute" stuff. Like the wakup music and the rock names.
It's like reading a wedding announcement or something. "And the chief scientist wore a stunning black outfit, and his research maids wore matching green shirts with long sleeves rolled up. Custom pencils were used by all. The guests were delighted to see palm pilots made available for everyone, each customized with a charming orange Mars theme!"
They probably create Mods because they've seen others succeed. 2 guys make CS, players rejoice! A handfull of guys make TF, players rejoice! Another handful makes Day of Defeat, players rejoice! Someone releases a game built on some open source engine nobody's ever heard of, players are too busy playing HL based mods to even notice.
Imagine a little "cart" that could follow you around like a dog. Big enough to carry a few bags of groceries. Walk to the store, get your groceries, and it follows you back on your walk. You stop, it stops, you go, it goes, it doesn't go off curbs, etc.
People get all in a twist over things like the DARPA Grand Challenge and the military's desire to "robotize" war. The real win is when someone realizes that the same autonomous concepts that could drive a vehicle 150 miles through the desert would be great for directing an electric wheelchair down the sidewalk or the above "dog bot cart" idea around the grocery store or in the garden, etc. Or use it for someone working a warehouse getting supplies, or...
Though true in theory, this is not what it is in practice. I've seen multiple occurances where requests for data were not blatantly turned down, but tons of roadblocks thrown in the way. People who don't want their data out will find ways to block it despite what's right.
Currently I'm working on a collaboratory system paid for with NSF funds for NSF funded research. And yet the design as given has methods for blocking/hiding/"protecting" research built in by design.
It's not getting much coverage, but there was an extremely intresting Serious Games Summit at this year's GDC. Basically it was about the use of games and game technology for non-entertainment purposes. Training, learning, simulation, etc.

So I have to imagine a lot of people have read of the failures and thought, "I could do better than that". I hope that this "failure" does lead a lot of people to follow through on the thought.
Real violence, as witnessed by those in war, is far more numbing and has far more impact than video game violence. It shoccks the core. It lingers in the mind.
Video game violence just trivializes it. Nobody has nightmares about what they saw in a game. But they do have fantasies.
FYI Valve was hit by a DoS attack this morning, which really knocked it out of any smooth running. That had a LOT to do with the issues related to the patch.
Also, it just came out yesterday morning (about 36 hours after I posted this), so "3 days" is a bit of a stretch to say that's how long it was offline.
Go to http://www.robotsandus.org/moving/walker/ - there's a neat video on there of two walkers. One is from 1990 and just sort of swings it's legs to walk (no motors). The other is a walker from "now". These aren't exoskeleton legs, but rather (har har) stand alone legs.
That first one is so cool - you just get it going and it sort of ambles along.

Is that not one post has been mod'ed up about the actual project - just the /. effect ;^)
$40-$50 seems more like what I'm seeing.

Given the same guys that made TF for Quake and HL are still working at Valve, it seems like a good bet it's safe :^)

Neat challenge idea.

*Cough* *Cough*
Day of Defeat
More players than some of those big ol' mega buck titles!

What a naive and hugely prejudicial view of the elderly. I am suprised it got mod'ed up. Seriously.
When I first saw the headline I thought, "WTF Scooby Do Underwear? Segway?" I had this vision of people riding around wearing it on their Segways...
But not in the real world.

Self sealing ones?
I smell a wumpus!
Available in many forms, including a real deck of cards you can play anywhere and any time, even when the power's out.
The thing is, this game HAS been delivered. That pre-cache everyone is downloading is the game, encrypted.
The game HAS been delivered - if you got that CZero Steam cache, you have the game.

When are they ever going to get their act together and stop releasing such a buggy OS with these security violations!
Oh.... wait....
