Video Games Make Kids Fat, Violent, Swedish Experts Say
Personally I like the headline better if it is Video Games Make Kids Fat, Violent Swedish Experts Say
I leave it to the reader to decide how the sentence should be read but my personal vision is something like, "WTF YOU CALL THIS LUTEFISK!!??! GET IT RIGHT OR I'M GONNA BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF YOU!"
In several of the mars pics, the grinder had ground one clean through. Looked pretty featureless and very solid in those pics. I would think grinding through a dried up brine shrimp egg would sort of mess it up.
You're part way there if you go with Valve's Half-Life. Full SDK that allows you to create maps, models, etc. and a ton of public domain tools for sprites and textures. Also there are some neat extensions such as the Spirit of Half-Life mod which gives you a ton of nifty extensions.
The main place you have to code to create the game is if you choose to extend the game entities for maps, do new weapons, etc. But since Valve gives you the source for the code that does their standard weapons, it's not unreasonable to take their code and extend it.
You probably got caught by Valve's VAC (Valve Anti Cheat). Not the best detection system around, but it has the capacity to ban you from ALL servers for a long period of time based on your WON ID (or if you are a modern type and not a Neanderthal, your Steam ID).
But luckily for some, Valve offers up a form where you can plead your case. The above parent author? Ehh don't bother.
This is about how Valve'sSteam system works with VAC (Valve Anti Cheat).
VAC doesn't get updated REALLY fast, and it doesn't catch every cheat. Those who use the latest "cutting edge" cheats can still cheat. HOWEVER, here's the big difference: if it catches you, you're screwed - banned for 5 years from ALL Valve game servers running cheat detection. Currently this is about 85% of all servers running Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, etc.
So the basic model for VAC is to have not the best cheat detection, but by BY FAR the strongest penalty for being caught.
So if you're a cheater, Valve's being like old Dirty Harry. "Was it 5 bullets, or 6? Feeling lucky, punk?"
Look Valve Software's at Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat games. They are "non commercial" and have been since the start of their creation. But they also are commercial.
I've got both on my desk actually. The Linux machine is there for work, services, etc. The biggest customization I've done on it is make sure "alias ls ls -CF":^)
I think this is a fundamental difference between even the most passionate Microsoft Windows user... In GNU/Linux and Unix in general, the desktop is a person thing. We change it to fit our needs, our key bindings, our window dressing, our themeable widgets.
LOL I guess you're not a Windows user to make that kind of broad assumption. A lot of people customize thier desktops with backgrounds, layouts, dual monitor layouts, winamp/trillian/etc. set just so, what shortcut icons are on the desktop and what in the toolbar, etc.
To assume a Windows desktop isn't/can't be customized is naive and biased.
I knew someone whose ex-wife accused him of abuse because she hated him. He never came close to being convicted, but he hasn't been able to get a job since.
I assure you that I was called "booger brain" in elementary school, yet did manage to go on and lead a productive and employed life style. So much for YOUR theory then.
In fact having proposed such a Snopes quality story for us, I hereby accuse you of FOOLISHNESS! Hide THAT red mark next time you go to get burgers at the burger barn Mr. smarty pants.
So - uh - what if he's guilty? Is he still a Mitnick? What if the FBI raided someone that hacked kernel.org? I could see a lot of/. posters sort of exploding from the internal conflicts...
If a game development company has a good thing going and shows signs of success, then Activisions "buy and then hands off" approach is best. If they have a good idea but are making some mistakes or are up against some obstacles beyond them, then the "invest (and guide)" method is best.
As one of the recipients of the "buy and then leave alone" method (for Day of Defeat) I'm personally a fan of that method. DoD's creative side is still "owned" by the same team that made it to start with, but that same team doesn't have to worry too much about owning marketing, product release issues, E3 booking, etc. etc. etc. They get to stick to making the game, which is what they do best.
As one of the developers of a fairly popular multiplayer FPS game and a frequenter of the game's online forums this is definitely an interesting topic.
Something I think worth adding to this mix is an option fans actually have now days. Go make their own (damn) game. This is a mod friendly world we live in now. Don't like how a game works, and think you got better ideas how it should be done right? Then make it yourself. Or go find one of the hundreds of active mod projects and join it. Give your ideas to a cause and show your stuff.
I suppose that could come off as sort of arrogant, but it's not meant to be. That's where a number of games came from that are popular. CS, DoD, Desert Crisis to name a few.
Just give them an AOL account or set up a BLOG account.
In truth, all you're going to do by giving them "their own website" is just create yet another back water of stagnant web content. I would bet you that months from now it will be one of those websites where we see...

We'll be updating this website real soon with new stuff!
...and it's August 18, 2004
Save yourself and your parents the pain. Give them something they will remember and not so transitory.
Day of Defeat is probably in the $20 bin now days, but is "one endlessly playable package" as they say. Gameplay rocks, tons of online players (on par with MoH, RTCW, etc.), and it is Half-Life based so you know the netcode rocks.
There are some great Quake Done Quick demos and videos out there for the original Quake 1 game. They are just amazing to watch. Everything just timed perfectly with endless motion, action, awesome nade/rocket jumping, etc.
I can't wait for this research of yours to be put up next to the paper you've written about the unrealistic visual depiction of warp nacels (sp) in the third Star Trek movie - in that one scene where if you freeze the frame you can see a brief glimpse of a "wonka" class cruiser past the space station.:P
Man good thing I got a lot of tinfoil hats around, becuase I'm selling them like hotcakes right now and making a ton of $$ off all the fools.
I'm also stocking up on clingfilm in case Roy Orbison ever starts posting here.

Unless they are tiny Horta eggs.
Does anyone have a NASA link to the picture that's supposed to contain this object?

...I welcome our video game overlords. When ever they show up.

Non commercial just means it's not for sale.

You spend a lot of time using the word "stupid" and refer to yelling at people. Hmm.

Agreed.
My favorite strip now is Mutts.
It's not my favorite strip. It's the Simpsons of the comics I suppose. Crude & rude, and sometimes funny.
I guess I much prefer the fun and gentleness of strips like Mutts
True I suppose. But then how the heck do real dragonflies and real butterflies manage?
