  1. I don't see what the problem is... on School District To Parents — Buy Office 2007 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Parents are asked to buy books for their kids that are used once and then sold back for much less than what they bought it for. So I don't see what the big deal is in asking parents to purchase software that will last them several years that costs about the same as a single college textbook (if they get it discounted, as the article mentions). Asking parents to fork out $500 is unreasonable, but asking them to fork out $80 is not.

Speaking from experience, earlier versions of Office used to be just about as unreliable as OpenOffice. I, too, used to use OpenOffice, but mostly because it could export to PDF. Office 2007, however, is much much more reliable and I have never lost my work. OpenOffice still has issues with data loss.

Also, kids don't know that they have to save to Office 2007 format from OpenOffice. They'll save in the default OpenOffice format, and get yelled at by their instructors for not having the right version. They'll also get yelled at because of formatting issues. Whenever I converted between OpenOffice and Office 2003 I always had to edit my paper.

So, if MS is accountable for underage people buying their software from stores they don't control, then does Jack Thompson think individual alcoholic drink prodcers should be responsible for preventing underage people from buying their products too? What can they do but trust retailers to do the right thing? This kind of rampant suing is ridiculous.

I'm curious about your design of the "find" window. What considerations did you have for the ease of use? How do you think it compares to having the "find" window built into the browser window (like Firefox). Did you find that users were not be able to locate the "find" text box? Adding an option for having the "find" window as part of the browser window (internet only, as opposed to the Windows explorer) might be a nice feature. This enables multiple windows or tabs to have their own search, and users can have many searches going on at the same time.

  6. How we'll survive the next 100 years on Stephen Hawking Asks The Internet a Question · · Score: 1

Beside finding other planets, over time the human race is going to have to change its ability to live with itself. It needs to mature. Currently we are so caught up with our own lives that there are people so poor that they die from starvation. Small groups of people hold power and money. If we would spread it around, we could raise the quality of living for the general population of earth. However, that is extremely idealistic, and will probably never happen. I think that the way things are going, we'll be able to survive the next 100 years, as long as no one jumps the gun on setting off bombs and other weapons. The human race has an extraordinary ability to adapt, and evolution is inevitable. If countries get too crowded, plague or disease will remove the excess people. However, evolution is a relatively weak natural progression fighting against a strong unnatural force of weapons. It might take a thousand years for us to weed out a flaw in our genetics, but we can all be blown up within a matter of seconds. The human race doesn't seem to realize how much it tends to bring the torch of destruction close to the oiled wick of death. If we can teach people to put out the flame, then we will not only survive the next hundred years, but we will excel at them.

  13. Attacking the giant on Microsoft, Autodesk Guilty of Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

There are patent lawsuits going on all the time. Microsoft gets picked on frequently because they are the giant of today's software industry. They've also been around for over 30 years. It's interesting how everyone tries to take a chunk of a company that makes money and is very public, while hardly noticing those companies that are very small. It is possible that people actually try to find ways to step on the toes of large corporations like Microsoft when it comes to patents, so that they can go to court and win money. I'm not saying whether or not Microsoft violated a patent here, but just because someone went to court with them doesn't mean they actually did it. If it was Linux, most of the comments here would be about how Linux did nothing wrong simply because the opinions of them in this population tend to be more positive. I think we need to sit back and look at this situation more objectively. It is easy in the corporate world to patent something almost identical to someone else. In fact, it is getting very difficult to determine differences in software. It is possible teams in the companies came up with the same idea on their own, and now it is up to them to prove it.

Part of the lack of access is due to the fact that people live in areas that have no existing wiring, which is expensive to install. They don't want to install one wire to one house in a whole neighborhood or small town, unless they can guarantee more clients. If there was a fast, reliable, wireless internet connection, those places could get access.

All popular technology tends to start out proprietary and expensive. Remember when blank DVDs were too expensive for the common person to buy? Now they're a dollar or so apiece! Maybe this technology will catch on too... I guess time and society will tell.

Wireless makes a lot of sense; we wouldn't have to string cables throughout houses or apartments. Wireless today can be tricky since passing through zones can cause flakey connections. If the zone is as large as a city... well that problem isn't so bad. In fact, it would be awesome if there could be nationwide coverage, and we could use wireless on our laptops in our cars!

Next thing you know, they'll want a stripped down OS and you'll have to choose from a hundred different boxes because of cases like this. I think it would be better to have an option when you're installing (Like Linux!). Second of all, what's with the huge lawsuit? Is suing Microsoft for that much really going to do any good, or is it just going to give the EU money? It's one thing to force the company to change something to comply with law or whatever, because they should... but fining them seems to be just an attempt to get more money.

It seems to me that the reason most people even download music from Kazaa is because they want to see what other music is on a CD before they buy it. At least there are a few more alternatives now such as Apple's iTunes or some other internet sites. Maybe if the rest of the music industry would wake up and smell the modern age, there wouldn't have to be things like Kazaa to cause them to panic.
