Or just by file size first, then do a hash. No need to compute a hash to compare a 1mb file and a 1kb file.
thats exactly right.
Some time ago (years?) I came across a little book called "wicked cool perl scripts"
(do a google shure you find it..) In one of the first chapters there is a script that does
exactly what you describe (dupfiles.pl if I remember right):
To find duplicate files it goes down the directory hierarchy, sorts the files by size and
does a md5sum comparison of files with similar size.
I tried it out once in awhile and it always worked out very well for me.
The scripts themselves can be downloaded from the publishers website.
Have a look if your interested -
(btw. I do not have any commercial interests in this recommendation..)
>That is utter nonsense. If that were the case, then we would never be able to create antimatter. If it >traveled backwards in time, then we would see it before we did the experiments that create it. However, in the >lab, we create antimatter and it is still present after we create it. This would not be true if it traveled >backwards in time. Just think about what you are saying.
Not at all dear anonymous coward!
You may or may not have to check Feynmans precious books here, - he's going to explain it to you very well.
In short: When we 'create' antimatter - from the perspective of the antimatter this is the point of time of its annihilation (because for the antimatter time is running backwards)
When antimatter gets annihilated by the contact with ordinary matter (lateron in our timeframe) from the perspective of the antimatter this is the moment of creation of the antimatter.
I know it's not easy in the first place, but if you give it a few moments of thought it's logical and natural.
And it's been an accepted theory in physics for many years.
If you think about it: Antimatter can be considered as matter which is travelling backwards in time
(Please check up on the famous CPT-theorem on this subject for more info).
In this view it would be quite natural that antimatter is 'falling' upwards.
In addition it would explain why we don't see antimatter in our universe: The antimatter universe simply evolved into the other (negative) direction of the timeline.
On the other hand - matter and antimatter as just another manifestation of energy - it should fall down
So, _YES_ I personally am looking anxiously forward to hear about the results of this experiment!!
Well, you summarized it up very well:
Germany, Land of the Free, Home aof the Brave.
Times are a-changing aren't they?
Hint: No, Bush's country isn't any longer considered
'Home of the Free' in any part of the world any longer..
- Sad to say this but true..

I'd personally prefer a theory with 3 dimensions + time as an imaginary 4th.
This has been proven over and over again and is consistent with temporary
physics.
Anything containing more than let's say 5 dimensions is absolutely speculative
and there has not been any evidence for this whatsoever..
Last time I checked I couldn't see any evidence for more than 3 dimensions
(+time as a 4th) anywhere - even when looking under the sofa.
I remember a time when there was an internet
radio station called "Soma FM" available for free
on the internet. (Slashdot even had some
stories when they were forced to close down)
They played a lot of _very_
interesting music I never heard before - and
that you wouldn't get on your typical commercial
radio station either for that matter.
That was the time that I actually bought the
highest number of CDs I ever did in my Life!!
I remember more often than not, that I heard
some _really_ amazing stuff there - and simply
opened another tab on my browser, went to amazon and just ordered a bunch of CDs.
- It's been some time now that I bought any CD
at all - not because I 'd be downloading stuff or such rather because I just wouldn't know what to buy - the stuff on mainstream radio just isn't worth it..
the group apparently used a laser to measure spin rate and other variables when the roullette wheel was set in motion. Then a computer estimated the final position of the ball. They had a brief window in which to do this. Bets must be placed before the wheel spins three times. If the reports are true, they could do this on a completely fair wheel.
Now _this_ is the most admirable feat I'v heard of in a long time..!
Kudos to the team that managed to do somthing like this
That's a very valid comment - and I would never object. There is a lot of software that definitlely should not be open sourced - for the simple reason that it is not of value for the general public. - Or of wrong value for the general pubic for that matter..
Anyway, software that is of general use for the public interest is a different story..
I've just been trying out qtstalker for a few weeks now and I must say I'm quite impressed.
Although its look-and-feel as well as the functionality are still a bit betaish, it is already useable! ..I already did some nice trades based on analysis done with qtstalker..
However you might need a bit of experience in (the backgrounds of) technical analysis in order to use it properly..
It has a number of nice features:
- download of free (end-of-day) quotes data from yahoo etc.
- modular structure, plugins, written in c++
- open source
Conclusion: this is a nice program, it's really worth a try. I think qtstalker and geniustrader are the best open-source programs around at his time!
I think the metric system is like Open Source:
It's going to win in the long run -
simply because it's the logical way to go!
If you look at the evolution of things, there have always been different ways of doing stuff, but in the end one of them won - simply because it was undeniably the best way to go - and the others lost out..

DID try 12.1 quite a lot and was terribly disappointed.
Reformated harddrive and reinstalled 11.4 - and HAPPY!
WHY?
11.4 has GNOME 2 - Now THAT's a GREAT UI.
(At least when seeing the alternatives)

I second that. Here we are looking at more sophisticated effects of the weak force by solar neutrinos. This is exciting indeed!
'lagom' is just one of the best words to be found in other languages! it's in the list of my all-time favourites. no I'm not swedish.

Just my humble few cents on this subject..

Please get real folks
They lost 0:2, although they played a very nice game (IMHO).
Yes I have.
I've been running my car on biodiesel for more than 5 years now.
I have never had any problems with it and I can recommend it whole-heartedly to everyone.
It's an Audi A4 1.9 TDI which is fully certified on biodiesel, I've been running it for more than 300.000 km now.
Besides giving me the feeling of running an 'environmentally friendly'' car it also saved me a lot of money on my gas bills.
Honestly, I pity anyone that's still driving a 'gasoline car' - Poor guys..
so what would _YOU_ do if you had a gajillion dollars?
Buy a Porsche..?
I'd bet he already has a few of those..
My next notebook isn't going to be IBM anyway
it will be Fujitsu-Siemens.
and if it's not made in Germany it will be something else..!
Yes this is flamebait or what -
make your choice.
Guess you mean they're broadcasting _again_!
:^)

Yes, closed source is generating business opportunities in the first place
however, open source will generate better software in the long run..
And it's more sustainable / better quality
you know what I'm talking about..
(?)
So what does the acronym WAP actually stand for?
Answer: Wait And Pay.
It used to rely on a very old gd lib for gif support.
.. does it run linux?

Just wondering what a slashdotting of this stock might look like
I mean everybody on /. shorting this stuff..
..should be interesting..
