Hence when you drop an elephant, from a 10 story building, it would splash, wereas a ant would not be harmed. ( dont try this at home ). Humming birds can hum, becaue they are so very small. Build a humming bird the size of a aircraft carrier, and it rip its wings right off. Mass increass with the cube of the height, and strength only increases with the square of the height, so elephants HAVE to have large legs.

With aerodynamics, you can make the plane bigger, but its going to need more strength in the wings to fly with the incresed weight. That is why larger planes have larger wing area.

so actually, "Most trans-Atlantic aircraft spend a significant amount of time in the stratophere, and the traffic is going to increase."

"NOx still considered a potential danger." Hmm. like the citation says "Stratospheric NOx chemistry is _extremely_ complicated, much worse than chlorine chemistry."

And that is why Dr Drew Schindell, and Paul Newman are modeling it. They have models that account for 89% of the ozone loss. ( The quotation about the difficulty is very old, like 1982 or something, but the problem remains a tough nut to crack! )

But in this week's issue of Nature, a group from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City reports that their model indicates that during the next few decades, greenhouse gases will trigger a springtime ozone hole over the Arctic, much like the one now over the Antarctic."

    >does it use less fuel per passenger mile than existing airliners?
Absolutly no chance of that, it will take enourmous amounts of power to get up to speed, and when it reaches the statosphere, its going to take more fuel to keep it at speed. Bad news is that since its such a sleek design, that its going to take a lot more power/reverse thrust/noise to land and stop.

I used to talk on the phone while driving, then I saw others do it, and the tiny loss of concentration at a critical moment, can get you killed. Now, I pull over when I want to talk, and don't talk while driving, but I can listen to the radio, and learn to play songs.

Somethings I can do well with multitasking, like playing Bach/Brahms or Joplin, but there are some songs, I will never be able to play. I can play second hands of the concerto for 4 hands. I could do it easily, but when I play first hands, I am distracted by the second hands. I think is just all a matter of practice, in playing instruments, but driving is a completely different story, you have to constantly adapt to the changing road conditions.

But, in typing this reply, I can watch my torrents, and process monitor, and not be distracted by them. Walk and chew gum? The chewing does not take our attention, and is not a distraction. If it was, we would walk into objects.

Singing while playing piano, or playing along with someone. both multi-tasking activities. While driving, you have a lot of tasks to do, keeping on the road, keeping aware of other drivers, keeping your directions, and managing not to run out of ( look, there is that bird again! ) gas, one that has been a recent problem for me. And if your a felon, with a gun under the seat, and drugs on the seat, while speeding... you have to watch for police too!

The author was clearly distracted from driving, and stresed out about his cell phone. He priortized it above his driving, and switched his attention at a critical moment, and he says he cannot multi-task well? He can drive cant he? That is a lot of multi-tasking to take on. I am teaching a teenager to drive. ( but of course, I will never tell him, I can drive with my foot...or show him how! ).
