Even though our focus is singular, our products and services are diverse and far-reaching. We help you create, store, and share. We help you reach out to others, and our tools let others reach right back to you.

Yup. You're essentially attempting to become a high school teacher, which is a great gig. (I know because I am one.) You are not attempting to become the engineer with the coolest pocket-protector-filler. So, it seems your two most basic concerns are utility in the classroom and price.

You could get a cheaper graphing calc from casio or sharp, but they wouldn't really help you prepare lessons and see how the students need to solve your exercises, because the tool you use would be different than the tool the students use. Thus, I'd get a TI-83, because that is what the kiddies use. Maybe you can get one used to save a few bucks.

Of course, I remember buying a TI-83 my first year teaching (6 years ago) and then, 2 weeks later, being invited to a training where the "compensation" was being given a TI-83. Damn...

Seriously, if the many translations have altered the emphasis of the reading, or even the words of the most important speaker, then does it really qualify as parallel data? Heck, I'm only familiar with English-language bibles, and only somewhat at that, and the differences are significant. Imagine the differences (i.e., non-parallel-isms) when Bibles go from Greek to Latin to English to other languages.

(Yes, yes, I'm an American, so I am assuming that everyone works through English. But, I did mod up the joke about people speaking one language as being funny - d'oh I just killed my mod. Fair point about compatability and market-share. However, the "rights" granted by your purchase of a license at buymusic are significantly more variable and cumbersome than those granted by Apple's iTunes Music Store. The site includes silly talk about primary and secondary licenses for music. Then there is the baffling issue about the distinction they are trying to draw between CD+ and CD- drives. This thing is just WAY TOO complicated and restrictive. It has nothing on Apple for ease-of-use.

The original post highlights the similarities between several groups of people : How many geeks are borderline illiterate? BSEE, BSCS, MSCS, MSEE, MCSE, H1B-just-off-the-boat, it seems to make little difference.

Apparently, the original poster thinks little of the skills of those holding certain technical credentials, and then throws into the mix H1B ( a temporary visa program in the US for skilled workers) holders. In addition, s/he throws in the perjorative term : "just-off-the-boat". To this, I cry "Xenophobia", and simply point out that it is rude and misguided to confuse their level of intelligence with their level of fluency in written English. I would also hope that others would not make the same mistake linking my intelligence to my ability to read foreign languages.
