LOST is the only thing that's come close, and even then they're making it up as they go along; at least season by season.

The fact that a little tidbit dropped in one episode, which seemed to be nothing and would pass right by, and then, two seasons later suddenly become relevant made the show a colossal 'eater of time' for me.

From the interpretations of the DMCA I've heard, as long as any barrier is put in place, then that removes the burden from the manufacturer since 'casual' copying can no longer take place. Its like police tape around a crime scene. The tape doesn't stop you. Respect for the law stops you.

(I'm not commenting on whether the law aught to be respected here.)

As others have posted (and I didn't know) that AAC is an industry-developed codec, which makes it well accepted by the Industry. That MS has missed the boat on this one is significant, because they can't just "Netscape" the iPod.

MS is going to have to actually compete in this arena - something they are notoriously poor at.

  8. Re:AAC versus WMA on HP Dumped Napster for Apple · · Score: 3, Informative

It's nice to see an alternative to WMA catching on, and this deal with HP gives AAC a huge boost, breaking away from the perception that it is confined to the Mac world.

I've been looking at the choices in media media formats and I have not been very happy with the fact that WMA (WMA7 from what I have learned) has been showing up everywhere. I don't want to have a MS-proprietary format running everywhere. I know it's supposed to make my life easier (and make it easier for MS to extract more money from me later, and don't tell me they aren't trying to think of some way to do this).

With iPod Mini and iPod-HP, iTunes pre-installed on HP computers, with a very significant market share being carved out, and with AAC as the contendor to WMA it seems as though Apple has done the right thing at the right time. Once AAC is established as the popular everyman's format, then consumers will be locked into Apple's system.

This isn't something someone can just Netscape. Once someone is locked into a format, then any purchased music is stuck in that format. Unless the record store allows you to go back and download the media in an alternative format, you are stuck on that format (apart from burning / ripping yourself, but then you'll have aliasing issues to deal with).

Sure, now Macs are running Unix. But, before OSX, they had the strange OS where simple things were simple and hard things were impossible and there was absolutely nothing you could do to work around problems.

My IT department tried supporting the things, and it was not as simple as the marketing leads you to believe. Oh, sure, if you want to have a mac-only office, it's great. But, if you needed it to interoperate and share information with non Macs, you had extra software to load, configure, sometimes purchase. If you needed to print to anything other than an AppleTalk / EtherTalk printer, then you had the same problems.

We used page counting software for billing, and required print jobs to be submitted via lpr to a certain location. Not so easy as you might think.

Under MacOSX, a lot of that has changed considerably for the better. But, there are literally years of bad memories that system administrators have from dealing with yet another proprietary operating system that handheld you to the point of frustration. Not to mention having to deal with whiny Mac users who think the world is against them.

Been there. Done that. Had an Amiga. Loved it. Oh well...

So, yes, it's a new day, and now instead of competing with Windows on the network, it's competing with Linux and Windows. But, at least it has a chance to get some inroads.

well, now... finally we are getting to the heart of the matter. This latest maneuver is what this case has been about from the beginning: an attempt to kill the entire free software movement. This goes straight back to the Microsoft Halloween Letters, with the goal of finding some means of stopping Linux.

In fact, Halloween II raised the idea of pursuing exactly this: the effect patents and copyright in combatting Linux. Given the insightful analysis of one of our own, there is pretty good evidence that Microsoft is playing the wizard behind the curtain. This is precisely the arena they wanted to test Linux in.

    Oct 25, 2001 - Windows XP ships

What exactly are they going to charge for? Fixes, or enhancements?
