That's an excellent idea, but I think it would have to start at a lower level. Some K-12 schools have already started switching to books on computer. When the prices for a Kindle or similar device start getting in the $100 range this will be a no-brainer.
Spreading out the vaccines is more likely to reduce the correlation by delaying the vaccines past the point where symptoms occur, and creating periods in a child's life where they are vulnerable to diseases that deafen, deform or kill them.
As a parent you want to do everything possible to keep your child safe, and it can be extremely difficult to filter all of the fear pumped out by the media (and the nut jobs).
Delaying or spreading out some vaccines is a far better alternative to ignoring the correlation and having a huge backlash from the irrational fear of parents. My neighbors are now home-schooling their kids because they refused vaccines and the local schools won't allow them to attend.
Based on my experience, you can't trust anything they say about job openings at the new company, or about the future of your job. Their goal is to keep warm bodies in chairs as long as they need them and they'll blow smoke up your ass to keep you there. Unless you have signed papers saying they'll keep you, they have no intention of doing so. You are a headcount and nothing more.
Personally I'd be shooting resumes out as fast as possible in that situation, but I'm supporting a family of six and can't really risk being out of a job.
Doubtful. There is already a big push in the gaming industry toward more web based games (a great example is Iron Dukes). Tiny laptops and more capable phones (with varying operating systems) will likely push the market even further.
The first time my kids got sick with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease was back when they were burning all those cows in England for Hoof-and-Mouth Disease. Being a new parent it scared the crap out of me and it took a bit for the Doctor to calm me down.
With proper care, it's generally pretty harmless (even this EV71 strain). The biggest problems are really severe fever and dehydration. (It's also kinda gross.)
This doesn't seem to have been a particularly well-handled, or deeply-sincere, attempt by Microsoft... so what were they really doing?
Excellent point. Microsoft is fairly well known for using sleight-of-hand maneuvers. I wonder what else they've been up to since they started making big headlines with the Yahoo buyout attempt.
Also, hostile takeovers are pretty rare compared to the 70s and 80s. Companies learned tricks to deter and stalemate most truly hostile attempts, and nowadays it's pretty hard to do any kind of acquisition without approval the Board and/or Upper Management.
In the computer world, Logitech is sort of like this. They've not tried to integrate their speakers with their mice (Microsoft would find a way to do this!), and instead just try to make useful products that stand on their own merit. Unfortunately that analogy falls a little flat since Logitech's drivers are horrid. All those extra buttons aren't so nifty when the driver crashes constantly and the OS no longer recognizes them.
Personally I'll stick with my Microsoft keyboard and mouse which work surprisingly well with Windows, Linux, and OSX.
Seems to me that Jeff Gould is missing the entire point of Linux, RedHat, and GPL in particular. GPL means that the software is FREE for EVERYONE. RedHat sells a service contract to support sites that want to use the free software that RedHat chooses to package and support.
Another way to look at it is that Red Hat save a boatload of money on parts of the OS that it didn't have to pay to develop.

Exactly! Borrowing a book for free vs. buying it seems like a simple choice in this economy where everyone is looking for small ways to curb expenses.
Not to mention my local library caps fines at $6 for most books. I could steal 60 books for the price of the Kindle alone.

I think it's all about the last 4 years. These days, the phrase "stay the course" has a much more negative connotation than the phrase "flip-flopper".
