Slashdot offers me an option to not display ads... I have never ticked it because, unlike most other sites on the net, slashdot ads are not nearly as obnoxious as they could otherwise be. In the event that they start filling space between posts I will exercise my ad suppression, either by the slashdot checkbox or via adblock.

Because they have to pay for the ISP to actually VET the request to make sure there is sufficient evidence to kick them off. The ISP does NOT want to piss of their customers. The industry will start to be very clear about specific users. Hopefully having this avenue will also mean that the sue-and-settle method of getting cash can be addressed if they didn't first take this step.

I find it interesting that they specified that the Movie Industry needed to pay the ISP to vet the claims. Which means that frivolous disconnect requests should be weeded out or not submitted. This also means that the industry better have real evidence rather than just circumstantial evidence against their proposed user. Hopefully it should cut down on some of the bullying... It could have been far worse.

Windows 7 on my work laptop seems to have MS Office crash constantly whereas OpenOffice.org works fine (on Windows 7).

Nothing works perfectly... It's a matter of building a SOE and testing thoroughly with the hardware. I like MS and have defended them here before (both openly and as AC). I also defend Linux (I have used more than just Ubuntu, but I am using it to bring my wife into the Linux fold :) ) but only on its merits.

Windows still has a far more consistent approach to UI. It sucks in places, but overall it is far easier for users to pick up (which is possibly due to exposure).

I would say that "Christianity", "Islam" or whatever does not constitute a cult, but that the Church of said religion may. In that instance the Catholic Church could be considered a Cult in the same way that the Church of Scientology could be considered a cult. I believe it all comes down to the degree of harm that is caused to individuals and the hostility that these churches display toward those both within and outside their organisations. They could both be considered culpable as a cult IMHO.

Disclaimer: I am a lapsed Catholic. Agnostic. Though I still believe some of the founding tenets of religion (about how we should treat each other in the most purest form) are the correct tenets to live by.
