You don't need to read the manual, unless you are a control freak, because it does what you expect it to. It can some spiffy things that you will stumble across eventually with use, but it does what it should, when it should.
You want to use it? push a button.
You are done using it? It turns itself off. Since you weren't using it, the hard drive was off during the intervening time while it was just sitting there, so there is negligible hit to the battery.
Can't stand having it on for that extra minute or so? Yeah, read the manual and hold the stop button, but the only reason you want to do that is because you are used to other companies crappy interfaces in the first place.
These boxes don't need keyboard, video, and mouse hooked up, so the wiring of these boxes is significantly less complicated than their windows brethren.
A power cable, one or two network cables. USB access on the front if physical access for KVM is ever needed. Makes for far cleaner wiring.

NTT Joins OSDL

The cost of Sun's telco gear, with Vertas clustering and journalling software borders on insane for a large installation, so the long term economic benifits for NTT are obvious.
However, in my experience, a company as large as NTT would have signed NDA's with both Sun and Veritas to see what was coming in the next releases of their software, and to provide input into the design features.
I wonder if these agreements will allow NTT to do anything but help fund development of these features.
Using dh-make-perl, you can automatically grab the latest source for any module on CPAN that isn't already included in the Debian distribution, and make a deb package for it, trivially managing future updates and installation.
Heck, even I can outrun someone sitting around tying their shoes. Too much preparation sometimes hurts you more than just going with it.
I shred documents, and use different passwords, etc, but remember that the hardest piece of information to get about you is your DOB. That means lying about your age on those billion websites that require it for some idiotic reason.
But what if you bought a higher end component, such the pioneer DVL-919 combo LD/DVD player? Then, would you still that old equipment should be pushed in to obsolescence?
And if so, then what about the DVD format in general. Should we abondon the technology for something that has the rights management built in, so those millions of DVD's sold so far become worthless plastic coasters?
yeah, it was great, written by a company that thought it was good security to run their ftp server on a non-standard port and have all their source code available there.
Enron paid $30 Mil for them because they thought they were in a bidding war with Sun.
Sure, stuff was built without using interagent because the dev teams could never deliver what they promised. 2 years after buying Modulus to aquire the technology, they bought Warpspeed communications to provide the same software.
Oh yeah, and after being purchased, a company of size 8 went to a dev team of over 50. Apparently, no one ever read "The Mythical Man Month"

Crap people - "1500" byte packets have nothing to do with tcp OR ip limitations - it's only there because of ethernet, just like frame links are around 2k packets, and Token ring is 4k, and SONET doesn't have native packet sizes, it's whatever packet you are sending over SONET.
video on demand has NOTHING to do with TCP. It's all UDP. And the only error checking there is what you manually add.
So, what are they really doing? Hell, it's Cal-Tech, so it probably is pretty cool, but it sure doesn't have anything to do with those articles.
BTW, if it uses the same infrastructure, Why the hell are they already talking about the "improved internet2 infrastructure"?
One advantage of using carbon nanotube interconnects within integrated circuits is that these interconnects have the ability to conduct very high currents, more than a million amperes of current in a one square centimeter area without any deterioration, which seems to be a problem with today's copper interconnects,"
Oh, I get it. This definition must be simply that the politician tells the truth - "Hell yeah, I'll work on passing that bill if you donate $100,000 to my campaign. That, plus another $50,000 when it has passed so that I don't change my mind when elections roll around."
If you are serious about using this laptop for linux (or any X based interface), keep in mind that the Powerbook pointer only has a single button.
Just as I was about to purchase one myself (um, the 17" though), I came to my senses. My G4 desktop has a USB optical mouse with scroll, etc. and even the OSX portion uses the extra buttons, for the most part, but being stuck with a single button pointer while mobile would be hell.
Perl's safe mode prevents this from executing on the server. Now, if they aren't running Perl in safe mode for their users' CGI scripts, then they have no business having a server on the net.
Well, when Washington had a huge registration fee (which is what they voted out in the referendum), while Oregon's was $35/year, then a lot of Washington residents registered their cars in Oregon. So the Washington state police started monitoring traffic and heavily fining people that they found had illegally registered their cars in the wrong state.
Perhaps they would just do the same thing in reverse.
The reason that simply increasing gasoline taxes doesn't do a great job is because the largest concentration of population within Oregon (the Portland Metro Area) is within 20 miles of the Washington border.
If gasoline taxes where significantly higher, then people would just purchase their gas in Vancouver.
However, since Washington passed a referendum that destroyed the majority of their road tax base, perhaps a tandem gasoline tax increase would do the trick.
While HIPPA was passed in 1996, no one has been required to implement the requirements, as all healthcare providers are scared of the act, and have filed for extensions.
As far as I'm aware, the next round of extensions run out next October.
However, nothing I've seen about HIPPA would have stopped this. It just instructs them to take "reasonable precautions", and describes what types and combinations of information can't be accessed by unauthorized users.

Since there is no MLB team, it doesn't really matter.
For those saying that Portland is trying to get an MLB team, even if they did, it wouldn't go here.
Also, Portland is pretty much out of the running for the Expos.
Tickets for the minor league ball played in PGE park are dirt cheap. Few people I know have even attended a game.
