This has as much to do with Sony sucking consumers towards "premium" subsciption services as it does copy protection. "Want to play this CD on your computer? Sure, that'll be $5.00 a month!" can't be far away. And I'm SURE Phillips will have something to say about that!
Since Sony is on the one hand selling a portable music device and on the other hand denying you the ability to copy music to it, why not demand a refund? Same goes for Sony CD burners and even VAIO owners. If people started showing up demanding $1500+ refunds for their laptops I'd bet Sony would sit up and take notice.
For those who dared read the article, it does not appear to be an April Fool's joke (then again, I'm not an expert in the field, so maybe I'm missing something here). I think maybe the "weight crush" just sounds like like an obvious AFJ. So you've all been counter-fooled by a real story!
Well it's not a song, just a cheer... but all the same it was pretty embarassing. If you've ever one into a Wal-Mart early in the morning and seen associates line up for it, you know what I mean:
Gimme a "W" (W!) Gimme an "A" (A!) Gimme a "L" (L!) Gimme a "SQIGGLE" (Gyrate wildly) Gimme a "M" (M!) Gimme an "A" (A!) Gimme an "R" (R!) Gimme a "T" (T!) What's that spell? ("Wal-Mart!") Who's number one? ("The customer!") What store is number one? (e.g. 3032)
It was rather amusing to see overweight, balding managers trying to do the squiggle!
I think there's actually something to both the Biefield-Brown Effect, and to the Podelklenov effect as well. However, there is a lot of fringe "research" in this field, and that just makes it harder for people like Marc Millis to be taken seriously.
All the same, I am really tempted to try and build stuff like this and this!
Holland College in Prince Edward Island used to be known as the Samuel Holland Institute of Technology. I doubt the school bookstore was able to sell much logoware twith THAT acronym on it!
I'm the proud (?) owner of an SQL Iris 4M. I can't get it to boot. It also needs a 20 Amp shop-style plugin. I've been debating turning it into a bar fridge or maybe a really oversized PC case. If anyone objects to this senseless butchering of a historical artifact, let me know and I might be willing to sell (shipping NOT included! And you can come pick it up, I put my back out last time I moved it).
I can't remember the numbers exactly, but I believe a 5 MT warhead groundburst will leave a crater 200 m in diameter. It follows, then, that a weapon of this size should be sufficient to vaporize or pulverize meteors in the 100-200 m range (especially meteors of stony, rather than metallic, compostion). The practical size limit for nuclear weapons is ~100 MT which I think should handle anything up to 2 Km diameter. And somewhere in the bowels of the DOE I'm sure someone is busy researching antimatter boosted fusion weapons.
If you feel that the Advisor is guilty of unethical conduct (as I do) let his employer know about it here.
I'm sure the University is already painfully aware of this case, they should also be aware that the public is too.
This link, "University of Chicago professor and world's leading expert on the herpes simplex virus receives $50,000 Bristol- Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Infectious Disease Research", shows that the Professor has gained much monetarily as well as in prestige by stealing his student's work.
(Disclaimer: I work for IBM DB2 Support)
It seems to me that the real killer app for DB2 UDB for Linux/390 would a DB2 Connect EE (Enterprise Edition) instance running on z-series using Hipersockets to communinicate with DB2/390 on the same system. Talk about throughput!
I recall one talking head on CNN yesterday, referring to the Palestinians cheering and passing out candy, "we need to remember who these people are. They are enemies of America". The American people, indeed the whole world, will indeed remember this.
If this is true then any sympathy the the palestinian people may have enjoyed has died a quick and certain death. The U.S. will find out who is reponsible for this. They will nuke the place into a parking lot. They will send in the Marines to paint the lines. And nobody will care.
As many commentators have been quick to point out, this IS an act of war. I just saw the Taleban on TV; their ridiculous proouncement that they've been keeping Bin laden reined in will only provoke the US gov't to a very violent response.
I remember a few years back, reading that the U.S. army was using Quake during basic training. If nothing else, first-person shooters with a team element, like Rainbow Six, Team Fortess,or Counter-Strike make great tactical simulators. So I guess gaming skillz are useful for mud soldiers too...
Well the original article in Wired over a year ago (partial article here) stated that the machine rooms would be in the legs of the tower, and would be filled with nitrogen gas to prevent electrical fires. So you wouldn't be staring at those blinkenlights for long.
I heard Fox burned down the set for some short-lived series about firefighters, just when the series was being shopped around for syndication... Ah yes here it is...

From the ruling:
"Given the limited scope of our disqualification of the District Judge,we have let stand for review his Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law.The severity of the District Judge 's misconduct and the appearance of partiality it created have led us to consider whether we can and should subject his factfindings to greater scrutiny. For a number of reasons we have rejected any such approach." - IV.D.2.Review of Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law
"The judgment of the District Court is affirmed in part, reversed in part, and remanded in part.We vacate in full the Final Judgment embodying the remedial order, and remand the case to the District Court for reassignment to a different
trial judge for further proceedings consistent with this opinion." - VII.CONCLUSION
It seems what they really had a problem with was the Judge, his behaviour, and his remedies.
Does anybody remember that this is the guy that units of bogosity were named after? Check your jargon file. Not at all to say that I think Cyc is bogus - I just wanted to be the first to bring it up.
PS Yes this is a repost - I accidentally buried the 1st one in a -1 thread. Forgive me for being a newbie, please don't call the karma police.

An "unofficial" anthem I remember from my pre-Wal-Mart days was Working at the Woolco Manager Trainee Blues but this song was eventually banned by Woolco top brass.

What? You've never seen Sex for Dummies?
If you need this book I'd not leave home without this gem either.

Yes... and they have a Co-operative Technical Support Agreement too (Sun VIP). As they do with many hardware and software vendors.

TBS, TNN, TLC, even Speedvision switched to non-stop news. This is unprecidented AFAIK.

It's coming out on DVD in two weeks! That was one cool miniseries.

Anybody here familiar with the Business Rules Approach to application development? C.J Date wrot a pretty good primer on it called "What Not How".
