Except most people prone to religious thinking see the soul as something immutable that 'inhabits' the body, and they typically believe soul is incapable of interacting with the physical world without a body to inhabit. If something is wrong with the body's brain, they may interpret it as the soul having trouble 'interfacing' with the body correctly. Sort of like if you smashed a computer's CPU, everything would stop working, despite the gigabytes of perfect bug-free code on the hard disk.
Like that Terri Schiavo woman in the news recently. Some of the religious among us believed everything about Schiavo's personality, memory, etc, existed inside her despite the inarguable fact her brain was severely damaged. You or I would reject that hypothesis, but they are coming from a far different, difficult to understand worldview of magic and miracles and invisible forces.
So he got tired of being a poor junk collector, and decided to blow off some stress by snorting a bunch of cocaine off a few high-class hookers' protuberant body parts. He needed to find some way to fund his activities. Who's going to miss some sweaty T-shirt that some unwashed astronaut probably wore for a whole week under his space suit, or a discarded Tang bottle?
Lots of us have expensive hobbies, who are we to judge?
Alton Brown is a knowledgable guy, but I just haven't experienced the phenomenon he describes. Perhaps it's only an issue for serious chefs who are preparing food all day long and must keep their expensive knives in top condition.
I use heavy glass cutting boards in my kitchen. You wouldn't think glass would be an effective surface, but it is. It's nonporous, and doesn't get the scratches and gouges that plastic and wooden boards do, so there is no place for the bacteria to hide in. You throw them in dishwasher when you're done using them.
To keep this on topic, why don't these hospitals just buy silicone covers for their keyboards? Silicone is nonporous can be completely sterilized by immersing it in boiling water. I have a silicone keyboard cover for my Powerbook, it's great.
Yeah well, when I worked with him, I heard he was a neo-Nazi whose diet consisted mainly of live cats and dogs. My office was across the hall from his, and you wouldn't believe the noise of those poor animals being devoured while his Nazi propaganda music played at full volume.
This latest indictment comes as no surprise to me.
You are correct, but this the first time the American government has sold out it's own workforce. The American workforce has not changed, but its government has. That is the real cause of the situation.
When I lived in Malaysia, I would read the English language newspaper, and I always got a chuckle out of the crime section. "So-and-so was found guilty of whatever and sentenced to 6 strokes of the rotan." The rotan is a long, flexible wooden cane that they use to whip your ass with! I believe there is a similar punishment in Singapore.
The "rotan" would be an excellent punishment for spamming.
As you said, he is being made an example of. The 9 year prison sentence is just sensationalism to get this case into the news, so the message will clearly reach others who engage in this activity.
He isn't in prison now while the case is being appealed, and there is a reason for that. On appeal, his prison sentence will be reduced to a slap-on-the-wrist level, or to probation with a hefty fine.
However, the result of his appeal likely won't be widely reported.
I'm aware many soldiers have dependents, but I wouldn't put myself in harm's way for any reason if I had a family which depended on my continued life and good health. I enjoy a few semi-dangerous sports/activities (snowboarding, cycling, amateur drag racing) that I might give up if I had young kids back at home.
Regardless of my marital status, I still wouldn't put myself in harm's way to help fight someone else's oil war.;)
Your wife and child need to be your #1 priority, not your (nutty, IMO) political beliefs. Dude, in 5-10 years you will probably look back at your hardcore anarchist 'phase' with embarassment.
The question is whether or not you want to have a felony conviction, mortgage foreclosure, and possible divorce in addition to your embarassment.
I agreed with the first part of your post, but I would argue that in the United States, there is almost always an alternate recourse to stealing, therefore stealing $100 from a wealthy individual or stealing $.10 from a indigent person are both equal moral errors.
Doesn't seem to stop people, though. Alternate recourses often involve putting down the crack pipe, cleaning yourself up, and getting a job. What a drag that would be.;)
Sure, you could come up with some hypothetical situation where a poor person must steal to pay for an expensive medical procedure, or whatever, but subsistence-level wages are typically available to everyone in Western society, regardless of education or background. Stealing is virtually always inappropriate in such a cultural context.
Bad idea. You don't want to be stuck taking all conputer science, math, and engineering during your junior and senior years. The workload is enough to kill a person, and preclude part-time employment. You might even wind up spending an extra semester or two in college. Pick the easiest cultural and humanities 'fluff' electives, and spread them out through your time at your university.
The problem is eventually you get old, and it becomes more and more difficult to attract that newer model. You should get married just before you reach that point in your life. For men, it can be anywhere from 30-40 years old, depending on your looks and income.
It's just a tiny resistor that you put inline with the fan's power cable, so it's inside the case. Yeah, I bet you're slightly increasing heat inside the case, but if you're slowing down your fans in the first place... that's probably a tradeoff you've already decided to make.
You can also place a resistor inline with the fan's power connector. Even easier. The fan gets less power and spins slower and quieter. Zalman fans even come with a resistor.
Someone familiar with Voyager please enlighten me... Why does it cost $4.2 million to record a radio signal? I'm sure you need special equipment, but that figure seems a bit exorbitant.
Seems like one scientist could handle the job of recording. If later on we want to put more people on the job of analyzing the recorded data, we could.

Be aware you have to get permission from the contractor if you want to run your own wires while they're building. You can't just sneak over on a Sunday afternoon and run your cables. They'll often tear your cables out.
Just ask. Solicit input from the people under you about what you can do to help them thrive. You have to go to them, especially with geeks.
Also, I've found doing little things can boost morale. Take them out to lunch once a month. Always provide take-out when someone has to work past dinner time. Hand out free movie tickets on Friday. Stuff like that.
Geeks thrive on compliments about their technical expertise. When one of them does something clever, make sure you notice and let loose with the attaboys (or attagirls.)
Anyone can manage resources and generate a project schedule. Comparatively fewer managers generate feelings of respect in their employees.
Is there anything we can do besides revert to an agrarian society and kill off 80% of our population to return to preindustrial population levels? I don't think there's any politically acceptable solution to climate change, so we'll just have to ride it out (if in fact it's a real phenomenon).

I used to have a fanless Radeon 9600. Sapphire makes it, try Newegg.

Good luck to you.

So what, let them throw a fit. Who's the boss at your house, anyway?

I seem to be having some problems with my lifestyle.

Yeah, I just looked at my electric bill and it's six cents more this month. Why weren't you there to warn me, Jeff??! WHY?!?! OH GOD WHY?!?!?!

Bizarro! Bizarro! I'm moderating! Bizarro! I'm moderating you!!!
