I did it again last night. This is _after_ I shut all user windows down, having saved all my work (I just use that machine for synching iTunes/iPod) and do the Start->Shutdown bit.

This time the dialog wasn't on the screen long enough for me to read it properly - something about .Net Broadcast or whatever. Whatever, just shut the sucker down so I can go to bed, thanks.

I agree about the dog to some extent, but far more annoying for me is when you are shutting down windows and you get the little dialog boxes coming up with "Ending so-and-so" task. It gives you the option, with a nice little button to "End immediately".

So, like, I'm trying to shut down here. Why are you showing me all these dialogs so that I can shut down faster. If you can shut faster yourself, why not do it without me having to sit and monitor the sodding thing for christ's sake?

At least with the dog you can turn it off, eventually.

  16. If you're short of content for your site on Violated Copyright Law — Now What? · · Score: 1

There's lots of things you can do without using copyrighted content.

For example, you can just use the alt tags of a non-existent or spacer image to convey the meaning of the photo you intend to replace it with. One fun way is to use an image so obtuse that no-one in their right mind would allow it's use on a live site - the copyrighted image would easily slip some people's mind to change since it looks OK the client will put it out of mind to change, so use a non-copyrighted image that sticks out as having nothing to do with the site - a photo of your cat, or your toilet, perhaps.

This serves as a placeholder, but also every time the client looks at your site, they will be reminded that

    a) there's no way the site can go live until that image is replaced and
    b) they really must get the correct content to you so they don't have to look at that damn image any more

  17. I don't see how they can do this... on Washington State Encourages Internet Sales Tax · · Score: 1

    (FYI I am Canadian)

Firstly, the Supreme Court decision mentioned (RTFA) states that businesses don't have to collect taxes for a state unless they have a presence (nexus) in that state. Secondly, what state is going to start collecting taxes and remitting them to another state - they have no obligation to do this (due to the same 1992 SC ruling I believe) - it would only work with a reciprocal agreement (hence the consortium of 21 states I guess).

But, it only takes a few 'rogue' states to spoil it. If you had a choice of opening up an internet business in Vermont, for example - which, for the sake of argument, subscribes to the consortium and collects out-of-state taxes, or one in New Hampshire which for the sake of argument doesn't, where would you go? In New Hampshire your product would cost less to consumers, you would sell more, and you would only have to remit taxes to one state.

States must lose business (therefore employment, therefore taxes) if they join this scheme - unless they all do the same, but it will always be in some state's interest to opt out.
