When I buy something, I'm lucky it works and I'm even more lucky it works beyond the end of the warranty period. For the stuff that fails inside of the warranty period, I'm lucky to get repairs or replacements.
Very little to brag about for me. I once had a Conner hard drive that never had a single problem. The keyboard I'm using hasn't failed yet, but it's still fairly new.
You guys thinking you can just upgrade the entire computer with a closed up little plastic card, forget it. Gigabit ethernet outruns the 32 bit/33 MHz PCI bus. Video cards, gigabit network cards and even some sound cards have heatsinks and (some even have) fans. I'm having a hard time imagining exactly what this will be good for.
Give me $25,000/year, a building outside of town (for safety), the equipment and I'll run it. I'm making a little less money now and I love this kind of stuff. It's even worth moving to BFE if I can get high speed internet there.
Ya know, I think the population of the world has gone up a bit since 1959. Duh. Even if a smaller percentage of the population go to see movies, it's possible that the number of people seeing movies could still increase.
BTW I've never downloaded something that wasn't intended to be free. Yes, I'm a goody goody.
Super idea! It would make editing in Photoshop or GIMP super fun. They might have to chnage the programs to take advantage of the new feature. Maybe a new file format too?
Yeah, you're right, but RedHat not only announced it, they also patched it. I updated my RPM a couple of days before you knew about it. If it had been Microsoft, we'd probably know about it for a few weeks and have a patch a few weeks later.
Yep, I use both RedHat and MS products. Is is bashing if I like both of them at least a little?
IF they bring a few back (I think they should), they don't have to live in a zoo. There is enough room on the planet that we can set up a preserve for them and not have to worry about a few sheep getting eaten. Should some escape, the only reason that should allow the killing of the animal is if a human is in real danger. I don't mean, "It's coming right for us, Ned". I mean, "Shoot it, it's got your little girl in it's mouth".
I think we should bring back as many of these extinct animals as possible, if only to learn a little more about them. If we can't make a breeding pair, we'll at least have a much better idea of what they were like originally. Quality photos would be almost as priceless as the animals. I have no desire to see a bunch of dinasaurs running around eating cows and people, but more recent species would be very interesting.
All of this crap about "god" is really sad. Letting religion anywhere near science goes against the restraining order. Doesn't anyone watch the Simpsons anymore?
What the heck is a "Katz"? Seriously, I can't stand to read a word that liberal jackass writes. I ignore him when I'm not logged in and when I'm logged in he's filtered. How do I filter "Katz" in articles he didn't write?;)
As for the ATI deal, I don't think it looks good for ATI. They had time to tweak the driver's performance in Quake 3, but not make them better overall and more STABLE? There have been too many complaints about ATI's drivers to have time for this stuff. The 8500 looks like a great peice of hardware. I'll be using a nVidia card for a while more though.
What scientific work require LCDs on the desktop? At work we have 8088s, 486s and PPC601s for our scientific applications. Most of them are on VGA 14" monitors to 17" SVGA monitors. No, we can't afford LCDs or P4s or G4s. Putting a P4 - 2 GHz next to a 1980 GC/mass spec looks a bit silly. The data that comes out these machines is pretty easy for a 486 to handle. There are SGI and Sun workstations in the building. That's where most of the big money goes.
No, I'm not planning on returning it. I did mail them a note complaining about it. Since I can listen to it (on the computer) and I want it, I'm not going to return it unless they can send me a normal version to replace it. The artist is an "indy" and deserves the money. This CD has better music than Michael Jackson's music.
I bought a CD from MP3.com and it will only play in my CD-ROM drive. The CD is a hybrid format with some Windows only CD player attached to autoplay. All of my CD players choke on it, thinking it's a bad CD.

Hmm...Perhaps because no one likes Win2k, I mean really, most game devleopers and companies refuse to 'officially' support it win2k...I think that's a sign:)
Much like Linux and MacOS. Are they bad as well? Everyone knows W2K is much better than 9x and Me. XP is just W2K warmed over with a bunch of useless marketing tack-ons.
I've never owned a single non-Intel chipset. I have had problems with the Creative drivers. I have asked Creative for support. I have been ignored/denied. I don't plan on buying an Audigy (what a stupid name). I have a whole mess of Creative Labs boxes in my attic that will probably show up on ebay really soon, I just need a suitable replacement. I play games. I like W2K over Linux (client). I know that I'm not alone.
My speakers, preamp & amp are good as well. (big long rant about how good, edited out)
I guess this whole mess equates to:
Linux support negates Windows 2000 support.
Good sound negates game performance.
Creative negates Windows 2000 users.

It seems that the only companies involved in OpenAL are Loki and Creative. Creative basically stopped supporting anything other than the newest cards on "the other" operating systems. Look at the last driver release dates for the Live series W2K. There have been lots of complaints about the way they mess up the PCI bus and Via chipsets and poor signal to noise ratios and on and on...
In the past it was expected that audio under Linux would suck because there was no support. So, now Linux will catch up and pass Windows support?
Are other sound card manufacturers doing anything with open source sound? nVidia nForce? Turtle Beach Santa Cruz? Hercules Game Theater XP?
I would LOVE it if nVidia nForce came in with support for Linux AND Windows AND produced good CLEAN sound with good speed under both OSs, but I'm not holding my breath.
Also what about high end card (M Audio, Aardvark, etc...) support under Linux? Are any of these cards good for gaming? I could care less about 5.1 right now. I want fast, clean, stereo sound, a digital out, low CPU load under the most demanding games, standards compliance, under about $150-200 and regular driver updates. You'd think after, what, twelve years of sound cards for PCs we would have figured all of this crap out by now.
Nothing wastes more of my time that trying to learn a new language (computer or spoken/written). A lot of the foreign language software comes with little games to play. Also Ham University has a game that teaches Morse Code (Pentode) and there are others. This is the kind of stuff I would want in their shoes, since Q3A is off limits. You don't have to aim low with children's software. Ask the prisoners what they want from the suggestions listed here. You might actually be worth something if you could translate after release.
Did the children know in advance that the military would be using the data they generated? Not that they'll get much out it.
Whiners in Califonia and other active areas can all get together to relieve the tension on a regular basis and lessen the damage of those pesky ground movements. The government can start a program to pay homeless and unemployed to jump at designated times and places. Some of the money could come from military budgets.
"Will jump for cash. My ankles are quite healthy."
The Iomega Predator and a CDRW drive made by Plextor are both out. With the old USB controllers they worked, but were limited in speed. Now they're basically IDE speed drives.
The controllers just came out like 2 months ago. I think Belkin or Orange Micro was first and then Adaptec.
Devices:
Where are the internal USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 devices? I know we have "Firewire" camcorders. Where are the drives with a NATIVE 1394/USB 2.0 interface? Why is there an adpater from IDE slapped on if 1394/USB is so freaking great? Why not go native?
Mucho kudos to the programmers that did the work on Linux USB 2.0. I'll see it someday. Right now Linux is my server and Windows is my client. I'm not sure what would make me throw a USB 2.0 card in that machine?
I still don't see the missing link. It's way too early for April fools. It's a bad mood kind of day.
Why are we NOT doing this now? We have astronauts submitting themselves like guinea pigs every time they go up to the gravity experiments, but why? Don't we have enough data yet? We already know that it is bad for them, their bones and their teeth. Build a station that makes sense. I know I'm not the only person that ever saw the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968, Clarke, Kubrick). Rotate the puppy. The tether idea isn't new either.
XP won't install any either, no matter what options you pick. Nor will any MS OS.
Some things that I would have liked to seen are:
Media player now almost useless - how do you play random tracks or loop the disc?
New GUI is form over function - why is it easier because the colors and shapes are different?
Why is it better than 2000 Pro if it's basically the same kernel?
What's up with the Mac style user icons?
Why does it keep losing the network connection? The NIC is supported. The cable is premium Cat 5E (550 MHz). The switch is on and works great. I've also seen this with 2000 Pro on a Dell Optiplex.
Why couldn't they just use CF or SM? We need more solid state devices, but with new technology. What's the purpose of the propietary format of the flash RAM?
The competition will be good for IBM. IBM's drives are super neato. Too bad they don't work in most digital cameras.

Thank you for your consideration. ;)
How much time do you spend on the internet in an average day? Home or work?
Also, do you think the word "internet" should be capitalized?
Thanks for helping to make the world a better place.

Why do they always have to mention the 760MPX? It's not available yet. It's been shown at the trade shows, but you can't buy one yet.
The 760MP's memory bandwidth is a bit low. I hope the MPX version puts a little more in there.
