But by the time you get the MB (~200) and a hard drive (~100) you at the price of an Xbox (~300). And you still need memory, DVD drive, and some type of case to put it all in.
When ever we would get rid of an old used drive, we would fill the damn thing up with random garbage. TV comercials, stupid movie clips, crazy funny songs, and what ever else we could think of. My personal favorite were corrupted word documents of random text.
Our thinking behind this was, if people are going to search the drive and profile you, we might as well keep them entertained.
I can just imagine the time people would take going through all the garbage. One time a guy came back to us fustrated that he couldn't open the word DOC's... LOL
when a gonvernment taxes people for services, they make the services available to EVERY ONE in the country. This is what the tax is for.
If RIAA is going to tax the internet, then they better make Music available to everyone on the internet. Some people may not be able to afford the time to download music with their 28.8k modems. Also they should use that tax to make sure everyone has access to the internet.
Just like a government does with Health Care Tax.
But, whom am i kidding, they are not going to do anything like that. They are just lookin for the big cash cow like they usually are.
As a Canadian who has a DirectTV dish and receiver and loves watching "grey market" TV, I hope there are more guys like him at DirectTV. Sure dealers of the hardware and those in the US are getting arrested in droves, but the Canadian end-user is apparently never bothered by the law.
Dude, not sure if you are aware of this. An April decision by the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that viewing such television services as those provided by DirecTV was illegal.
The RCMP may not be knocking on your door at the moment, but just as soon as they get through with all the dealers in your area they just may divert their focus. I sure hope you don't have a DirectTV silkscreen on your dish.
FYI -- Canadians CAN'T subscribe to DirectTV due to Canadian laws, as the government feels that we should be using the alternatives in our own country. However that doesn't stop a wackload of people from watching "grey-market" TV -- it isn't illegal, but you can't actually legally subscribe to it. It's really a very strange situation.
Ok, sure on a technicality Canadians legally can't subscribe to DTV. Because of the silly Canadian Content rule that the CRTC is all horney over.
But on another note, Yes, you can subscribe to DirecTV. People do it all the time from Canada. In the past I've called from Canada and billed it directly to my Canadain credit card. Sure the first phone bozo wouldn't let me do it, but i called back a second time and it all went through ok. There are a few companies who will set up an American Address Post Office box for you so you can subscribe even easier.
Yeah, Mini CD's are cool and all... I was using them for a while. My main gripe with the CD-RW disks, is that they don't last terribly long. A Couple Dozen writes and Poof. Just a little more relaible than a floppy disk. My other big problem with them is scratching. It seems like everytime i handle the danm thing it gets scratched. In and out of the case or CDROM.
But yes, the size rocks. It actually fits in my pockets. At least they are cheap enough to be disposable like the old floppy disks.
Also a word for the wise. Don't use them with Slot Load CD-ROMS. A guy here at work tried that once to my amazement. (Hint: they don't come back out without alot of work)

Lets say your best friend, Joe, has stock in "ABC Company" which is worth $50.00
Now you come along and ask Joe if you can borrow his stock for 2 weeks. Joe says sure, but it will cost ya $10.00 and i want it back in 2 weeks on the nose. The two of you agree and the paper work is signed.
Now you sell the stock at $50.00 and put it in the bank.
Fast forward two weeks
The stock crashes and is now only work $20.00 and you buy it and give it back to Joe as per your agreement. Joes gets his stock and $10 back. So you have only spent $30 and you had $50 in the bank...
The cheaper solution if you have a CDRW would just burn everything and keep duplicates of more important stuff at family/friends homes. A 50 Spindle is $30 or cheaper and more than enough space for all your stuff. (about the price of a cheap tape) Keep refreshing your old data on new disc's every so often as well. This way you can keep bitrot to a minimum.
Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time imagining a price for CDs that's sufficiently cheap that copying them becomes unappealing.
Maybe this will help. Lets price out the approx cost to copy 50 CDs and the cost to buy them outright. (warning these figures are approximate and are not meant to be accurate)
Computer and burner to copy CDs with. $600
50 Blank CDRs. $30
Time to burn 50 CD's and photo copy Inserts at copy store. (8 Hours @ $15/hour) $120
Total = $750
Buy 50 CDs in the store ($20 each). $1000
Christ, one could hire the kid next door at $15 and hour, buy them a computer and burn your piritated CD's for cheaper then it is to buy them. Does this mean anything to you? It sure does to me. CDs are overpriced.
Yeah, i understand where your comming from. Also imagine a user with 100's or 1000's of CD's but no computer. I'm sure some of these folks would enjoy the use of a small/tiny MP3 player. One could get one with recording capabilites, but then again your limited to 1:1 recording time. Who wants to wait for that? Its just like cassette walkmans.
There are PVR like devices coming out on the market now that will let you RIP CD's into the unit to be listened to later. If there were some type of High Speed data transfer standard between all the MP3 players, then something like this could work. But what kind of world do we live in? Not that one. At least not yet.
Dude, I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but you can always plug the output of a radio (lineout/headphones) into your VCR RCA jacks (I'll assume you do have a VCR) and have it record anytime you want. Most VCR's have modes for 2/4/6 hours, so you can record for a while if you don't know exactly what hour the program is on.
Are they able to tell us that we cannot transfer our licenses to the people purchasing our equipment?
This entirely depends on which license you have. KMart/Bluelight most likely has a different license than the usual home type user. Most likely they got some sort of bulk deal for some sort of site license. But since the artical does not say what type of license KMart/Bluelight has, there is no telling how its supposed to be.
They must have improved the code alot then. The older router i was using was a huge hit. 128kb/s without and 80kb/s with. Kinda noticable in my last usage.
Its good to hear that they have improved, maybe its time to look into them again.
Well, this is almost my exact point. You know about changing/swaping IRQ's in the BIOS for slots.
I can't count the number of friends who had computers that were working, but performing like shit. Why should sound cards, network cards, serial ports, and USB controllers all be using the same IRQ? I realize the computer can still function, most of the time it still does. But it's simple to swap a few things around and change a few settings here and there. The difference can be night and day regarding performance and reliability.
With the amount of home hobbyist trying to break into the industry, there seems to be an overabundance of crack heads assembling computers around my neck of the woods.
1 cubic centimeter of water = 1 gram
So, 32 kilograms of water will be 32L
If one could get one of the modable DVD players with a harddrive AND a network connection. Then your talking about something.
But by the time you get the MB (~200) and a hard drive (~100) you at the price of an Xbox (~300). And you still need memory, DVD drive, and some type of case to put it all in.

What other crazy stuff did they think you could do while you were there?
I think they should make GPS attachments for the PDA world. But No...!
Do you have any numbers to compare?

What are you going to do? Have the computer program arrested and thrown in jail. Or are you going to take the SMTP server to court.
I can just see it now.
"I would like to intoroduce to the court, the case between Joe Blow and the installed Sendmail on the computer 127.0.0.1"
they want to restart it or get money to help with the power issues they are facing right now

Actually, i'm quite surprised it hasn't bumped into anything at all. Be it even a peice of space rock.
