    This is very similar to what happened at my parents place. Mom and Pop asked me to be around for the cable guy to show him what room the computer was in and where the cable jack was in the basement. The guy brought the line to the room and tested it with his laptop, then asked if i needed help to setup DHCP and e-mail settings. I said no, and he handed me a peice of paper with the server address's i needed so we can setup e-mail accounts online and left. Pretty simple.

    You may want to check to see how much that Router/firewall box hampers your connection. Find a fast site and download a file a couple times through FTP to get a real average, then disconnect the router/firewall box thing and FTP the same file from the same place.

    You might be surprised. A friend of mine had a Linksys BEFSR11 it was much slower. My 486-66 and ISA network cards with linux was transfering traffic faster than it. I havn't touched a linksys like device since.

    The XT doesn't have anything similar to modern computers, so it's kinda worthless for experience. The only thing you'll gain there is confidence...

    Hehe... I love this... I dare you to run off to your neighboorhood mom and pop computer shop with that under 25 tech who's been working on the new machines for a year and ask him how he/she would tackle an IRQ conflict. I'll bet you a raw hotdog that the answer will be.. "Uuuummm"

    Assembling computers for these guys is like playing with LEGO. If the peice doesn't fit or work, then just swap it with something else until it does.

    While it doesn't affect noise travelling through an object it does add weight to objects so it requires more energy to create that crazy rattle you find in all those teenage boomer cars.

    Play dough and Paper Machee i think can serve the same purpose :-)

    Yeah, it is kinda slow... So far I usually just use it to transfer 50Mb files from work to home and vice-versa. Currently i get a month or two of ussage from a disc. At that point i throw it away and use a new one. The pack of 10 will last quite a while.

    Yes, i do agree with you that its not a true/perfect replacement. But it does seem to fit the majority of my needs. Small, compact and re-writable media that can be read/written to just about everywhere. (All my friends and work have burners) Depending on what I'm transfering and to whom, i pick and choose between 8cm and 12cm media. Most of the time i use a 8cm CDRW because it fits in my pocket just like the old Floppy disk did.

    Dude, The replacement for the floppy disk is the CDROM. Just about every computer user i know has a CDROM available somewhere. At least the Media can be read just about everywhere. Just wait a while longer and everyone and their dog will have a burner. Problem solved. Too bad someone can't make a 4x or a 8x CD-RW that supports 3cm and 12cm disc's for like 30 bucks. When the burner can be as cheap as a floppy disc drive, then it will replace it. Ignore the FDD port dude, it should have been tossed a long time ago just like ISA slots were. Just move over to IDE/SATA and get over it.

    This comes as a bit of a shock to me, as nobody seemed to have mentioned that previously (or I haven't been paying enough attention).
    Yes, you must have been living under a rock or at least not in contact with much of the computer industry. Most resellers and distributers of computer products in my area have had this message plastered all over their webpages and in the store since the begining September.

    Some punk stole my broken radio a few months ago. Haha... To bad for him...

    I now listen to the traffic and things around me. (I'm not going to buy another radio just to have it stolen) It amazes me when I'm the only one who pulls over for the fire truck barreling down the street with its sirens on.

    Have a look at this page...

    If you are running Apache, then the worm will identify you as a potential target. Because you are not running OpenSSL it can not execute the vulnerability on your machine. So you are safe from the worm infecting your machine. Just be prepared for more scanning as a few infected machines identify you as a potential target.

    I don't think there are many Silo sites is Canada, but there are more than a few Radar Sites. Check out the DEW Line projects around the 60's. The drawback of these sites are location. Who wants to go to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut or even Nudluardjuk Lake, Nunavut?

    Tee hee, that's funny. Also, are they still running Hotmail on Apache/BSD or did they finally get it moved to IIS?
    Sort of, as far as Netcraft is concerned the [ad.***.hotmail.com] servers are still running Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) on FreeBSD. All the others seem to be switched over to Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000.

    Hmm, the average 2 car garage is 28' by 30'. So that will make the garage 840 square feet. I'm guessing the average duck takes up 1 square foot. So my guess 840 Live ducks and alot of duck poop.

    Now if your talkin rubber ducks and your garage is 8 feet tall, and the average duck is 4 inches cubed. Then your lookin 181440 rubber ducks.

    There were MiniDisc drives around a while ago. (think years) Sony and some other company each made one, but not any more. I doubt they will ever come back. At least they are still around for music players. But i see that changing soon. MP3 players will wipe out them out soon enough.

    CD's are not that bad. As long as you remember to put them in a case to protect them. They are not as fool proof as minidisc's and floppy's once where. If ya want a smaller more portable CD, then why don't you pick a few 8cm Mini CD-RW's. Just remember to put them into cases and they should last a while. But 180MB's fill up quite quickly.

    The replacement to the floppy has to be disposible. Are you gonna had over your 128Mb USB keychain to a co-worker with hopes of getting it back. Come on... Never gonna happen. Unless there is a USB like item for like a buck or two at the most. Right now the closest thing we have for a floppy replacement is the CD-R. Just about every computer has a reader, and writers are becoming more common every day. Personally i hope USB like keychains can become cheap enough. But until then I'll just keep burning CD-R's

    K, so i leave a Brute force dictionay attack running for a few days/weeks if i really need the data.

    Next, the silly corporate users forget their passwords, and at the same time they used a really secure one. Now the drive is fubar and all data is lost.

    Next up, the user lost/breaks the key. Or even the key goes fubar itself. All data is lost again. Grrrr..

    But then again, whats stopping the attacker/theif from recording the Key exchange somehow and duplicating it later back in the garage.

    If you were really smart, you would design it to be much longer than 35,000 km, where the orbital velocity is much less than geostationary, and apply a counterweight to shift the center of mass. That way, cutting the elevator would cause the entire assembly to be hurled into a higher orbit.

    Yeah, and it would pull the earth out of its natural orbit while its attached. Brilliant

    Actually the original MD-Data disc has approx. 140-Mbyte data capacity in 1993.

    In 1996 Sony also developed a 4X density MD which had a memory capacity of 650-Mbyte. You can find them in some Camcorders which Sony make.
