You'll never (in the reasonable future) see this in my town. Partly for budget reasons, partly for training, partly for lack of vision, but mostly just because the schools are trying to barely cope with just about everything else that goes wrong day to day.
We're wired *fairly* well, there seems to be at least 1 computer in every classroom, and several labs containing 10-20 full workstations. But from what I've seen (and I've gone to town level I.T. meetings) the "technical staff" (and make big emphatic air quotes around that) is marginal at best and struggles to keep ANYTHING running. I've been told not to piss her off because she makes about $25k/year and there is no way the town could find a replacement.
The other end of the equation is the end user teachers....I was at a parent teacher conference last night and inquired about the computer in the front of the room. I asked "is it online?", she replied "I don't know".
So there are two problems, 1) inadequate technical staff (they will not accept volunteers) and 2) inadequate end user (teacher) training....both of these can be overcome with lots of money and in Massachusetts, it is just not forthcoming.
I know exactly what I would have told myself. I was a typical dorky tall skinny geek, and I barely ever made an attempt to try any sports.
The few times I did, I was pretty bad, and pretty self-consious but I DID get better. I could have easily played basketball or track, but I was too introverted to try....
If I had tried, I probably would have been in better physical shape, and met more people.
But who knows what else it might have changed? Being dorky and out of shape is what steered me from college to the military and subsequently my wife.
I have an ancient motorola flip phone on its last legs. I need to upgrade soon too. However, I don't use my phone much so a plan with many minutes or fancy features is not that important to me.
What I want is very good or even just good audio quality and connectivitiy. I would say that no one I know is actually happy with their phone/service. Everyones calls drop and every phone sounds sounds horrible. I don't just mean in tunnels or crappy locations, I'm in a well-towered region and *nobody* has good service!
So, is there anyone (particularly in southeastern new england) that has a phone they like with a carrier with decent audio quality?
I still have two Alpha 266's sitting silent in my basement. Yes they were ok, but I will remember them for being difficult to boot and load.
I know there are normal learning curve issues, it was my first non-intel platform and there was a lot for me to learn.
However, what I discovered was that I couldn't install the RH 7.1 ISO for Alpha, nor the RH 7.0, I had to go back to RH 6.2. This gave me the impression that people (or at least RedHat) had already given up supporting the platform.
In a startling coincidence, I read this article as I was filling out my yearly Combined Federal Campaign donation.
It had never occured to me in the past that EFF might be on their big list but they are! So this year, my donation has gone to the EFF conveniently via payroll deduction and the CFC

I have Wavelets and Filter Banks Strang/Nguyen 1996 (Wellesley - Cambridge Press)
I found it to be very readable and even interesting. There are about 4 chapters of filter banks before diving into the wavelet material and I think that helped clarify many new (to me) concepts.

If the desired output is a linear graph, it is only necessary to obtain two empirical data points. If you only have the opportunity to get one data point (or you are lazy), just adjust the desired slope accordingly.....
On cartrips with my family, if my wife and I start discussing something sometimes one of my kids will interject with question which leads to some interesting conversations. One night we were talking about state lotteries which led to statistics and I was trying to explain to my kindergartner the basic concept of "chance" from a pool of people and what happens when there are a lot of people involved:
"Mrs. Souza is going to pick either you or Brenny and give you this new pencil....do you think you might get it?" "um.....yes" "Ok, now suppose She is going to pick only one person from the whole class, do you think you might get the pencil?" "um...maybe" "Ok, now suppose she is going to pick only one person from the whole school, do you think you might still get the pencil?" "um...maybe...but...." "but what?" "whats so special about that pencil?"
This was exactly the same thought I had....although I think it would be a bit of a stretch for De Niro to play R.F.:)
I was absolutely spellbound by the biography of Feynman shown on NOVA over 10 years ago. Last Journey of a Genius was remarkable and I've been searching for it ever since. I confirmed that it is a BBC production and that WGBH in Boston (NOVA producers) will not be airing it again as far as they know.
I have contacted dozens and dozens of libraries and also these folks to try and beg/borrow/steal a copy of this tape so I can see it again.
I publicly make this pledge of a $50 donation to the EFF for information leading to me securing this tape!
I should have mentioned that my 12 year old son is a 22 level scout, my daughter is a level 6 theurigist, and my 7 year old son is a level 10 Higlander armsman.
They all play baseball and soccer are "A" students and and have other "real world interests". We all use this game to relax.
Yes, I'm next to "Highlander Warrior" on the right proudly holding my Realm Keepers shield with my helmet removed in tribute. I set my alarm clock to get up unusually early specifically to travel (yes *travel*, its a long and dangerous way from Cornwall to Hadrians Wall)
I can't believe the number of "pathetic loser" comments that I'm seeing here. Yes, this is a game, but no it does NOT substitute for real life. We are not detatched from reality. DaoC is the very first MMORPG that I've ever played and it did not take me very long to realize that with the gameplay comes a great deal of human interaction, far beyond just "fragging" people in a FPS.
You truly build and associate with a community of people that you enjoy and care about. One couple in my guild (yes, most of us are over 30, married and have spouses and children that play) just had a baby and we all celebrated. One guild member was just called up to active duty in the reserves and we saluted him when he left (and he is missed already).
If you had a co-worker die, I hope that you would be touched and saddened. These are people that I know and care about....why is this pathetic?
Interesting...can you explain this a bit more to those of us who've never seen an AS/400 in operation? After I upload a file and it's added to a database (a db2 database or some other hidden format?) is it queryable? Can I somehow "select uloaded files from sometable where upload_date between $thisdate and $thatdate" ?
I know that Microsoft is planning to dramatically integrate database functions into the filesystem in an upcoming version of windows (Longhorn? Yukon? I forget)...but it seems that once again MS is not the innovators, that maybe someone did it long before them:))
Our office of about 3000 people has to take various short training programs annually...office stuff, sexual harrassment training, security, environmental policies etc.
When they moved it to the web they bought/wrote a package that does all the user testing using multiple choice questions and client side scripting. So rather than sit through an hour of online tedium I 1) view source, 2) identify answer 3) submit answer.
Nobody seems to notice or care that I'm done in less than 2 minutes.
No, I have not read any windows EULAs lately so I have no idea if this is possible, but if the cost is the same, I'd take the one with Windows and donate the license to a local school.

How Java Floating Point Hurts Everyone Everywhere
Highpoint chipsets are cheap, I've got two motherboards with them built in (and unused)
In a heartbeat I would buy a 40 GB drive that was actually internally mirrored 40's. Yes, I will pay a significant premium for integrity.
So, manufacturers, build me a single drive form factor hard drive, with 1 ide connector that is in fact a RAID 1 array!

"Pool Sluts" is a great name for a band :)
So, 23% of people polled think that if they buy a CD it should only play in 1 device? And 18% think that they should NOT be allowed to make backups?
Can we get some bleach for the gene pool please?
