Yea good luck with that one. I try to prepare as much of my food as I can myself, to eliminate HFCS, but it's not economically feasable for a single guy who wants to spend his free time doing something other than cooking and/or "protesting".

I can't stand HFCS. I drink Diet Coke because the real thing started giving me heartburn when they dropped Cane Sugar.

I can't realistically eliminate it from my diet until I can either afford to buy "health food alternatives" (which don't exist for everyting) all the time, or can find a wife to work for the both of us so I can do the cooking :) (I'm an excellent chef, I just don't want to spend most of my free time doing it if I have to work for a living too... especially if I'm just cooking for myself)

Another poster stated it clearer than I did. Even if I bothered to learn a new layout, it would only cause me trouble, as when I went to use a computer elsewhere , such as a shared test machine at work, I'd have to switch back to QWERTY.

There's just no reason for me to learn a new layout. It isn't used where I work (and it won't be) my friends dont' use it. There's only room for ONE touch typing layout in my muscle memory. I'm not going to pollute it by trying to learn this new "concept".

There is no benefit to me, monetary or otherwise, for me to even consider this new, very minor change to a standard keyboard layout, so I simply won't waste the effort.

  8. I think... on What Do You Think of the COLEMAK Keyboard? · · Score: 5, Insightful

That having somehow learned to touch-type on QWERTY some time in the last 30 years, there's zero chance I'm going to switch to a new variation of a conventional keyboard.

Alternative input, chorded keyboards and the like might have some value.

A "different sequence of letters" would do little but slow down my touch-typing for YEARS and interfere with the interface for any games that I choose to play on the PC.

TFA: "Typing lessons available" ... yea great. Typing lessons didn't get me to touch typing on QWERTY, experience did. I have little time for classes, and I tend to devote those to something that's going to make my paycheck larger.

I've now followed the links (had to skim a couple). Very interesting indeed. I'd have to say that one of the most frustrating things about Asperger's is having the cognitave ability to understand what's happening, but being unable to stop it through force of will. Probably now after my insurance kicks over to my new parent company after the first of the year, I'll finally pursue actually getting some kind of treatment, now that I have a fair idea that it won't turn me into a flatline.

    Thanks again for the info.

Good catch. I missed that in my initial response in this thread. Lack of empathy, inability to process non-verbal communication (particularly the non-verbal sort associated with inter-gender relations) in the same innate manner as the average person, are the symptoms of my own Asperger's that have impacted me the most.

THing is though, older aspies eventually work it out (the non-verbal communication/flirting/pass), just too late. It's almost as if the part of the brain that most people use for that sort of communication is wired into other reasoning processes in Aspergers and Autism subjects.

My great fear has always been that that part of my brain was (theoretically) repurposed to the skills that currently allow me to make a living, and that any cure might render me able to understand non-verbal subtext, but doom me to a life as a McDonald's manager.

  17. Re:Schizophrenia on Lack of 'Mirror Neurons' Linked to Autism · · Score: 3, Interesting

While there are similarities in the two disorders (as well as with Asperger's) the tag "juvenile schizophrenia" is misleading, as Autism is not restricted to children.

That being said, further research into this pattern (such as to determine if there is an impact on schizophrenia) is of interest. As an aspie, I'm greatly appreciative of any information that can help me deal with the cards I've been dealt.
