This is inexcusable. M$ is suggesting that Windows be left on there, but if you don't do it all nice and legal like, your school might suffer consequences. Notice at the bottom where they suggest you have a site license for the school?
I donated a PC to a school once, and was damned sure to put Linux on it.
Gates, you can keep your OS. I don't want it and I don't need it.
And why shouldn't the guy have an arrogant attitude? He learned how to use the computer; why shouldn't anyone else? This guy probably goes around, daily, trying to show people how to avoid the problems they're currently having. But those people don't listen, more than likely, and he has to come back again. It's the same thing as most people here on Slashdot trying to tell people to use *nix, but nobody ever listens. But we're smug about it because we're the few that know better, right? Poor, dumb sons-a-bitches..."The world has enough self-important experts." Heh...we here on Slashdot are well-qualified to know, aren't we?
All of this may be so. Hell, I'll even concede, without looking it up myself, that it is so. And it doesn't change a damned thing. Those vacant-stared people at K-Mart at 2 PM don't help anyone. All they do is take. No amount of money that I make, no amount of money that the government spends on other things, no amount of philosophy changes that. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it, chuckle-boy.
Look: here in America, consumers pay an ISP for bandwidth. Every month. Without regard to who sent who what. (If this isn't how it works, then let me know; my ISP keeps charging me every month)
Here in America, companies/corporations pay for telco...every month(year/decade/whatever)...without regard to who sent who what. (If this isn't how it works, then let me know; my company keeps getting charged every month for telco)
Africa pays money for it's lines? What a shame. Africa should get it for free, no? Or at a reduced rate, no? After all, Africa provides so many things to the world for free, right?
Sorry, bud, but Africa gets no sympathy here. They have a lot of opportunity there and they keep wasting it. (And don't talk to me about being "under a bootheel" either; the British tried that shit here in America 2 centuries ago, too, if you recall) Before Africa gets the luxury of the net how about it gets the rest of its infrastructure in place first?
I'm sure it made you feel better. Hell, it made *ME* feel better! But the death threats do set you up for more harassment, whether that's what they understand or not. You're lucky they didn't sue, or worse.
The Scientologists have a right to practice their religion as they see fit. But I assure you, if only half of the looney crap I've heard about Scientology is true then you better make sure that if they come to your door back them off quick, e.g. "Get thee behind me, Satan!" followed up by a high-powered weapon pointed at their heads until they are well gone is not over-doing it. Hollywood stars join this cult because they aren't made to do things like sign contracts saying that they'll serve in Elron's Naval Fleet for the next 99 years...for free.
On the other hand, you might consider getting rid of those other looney religions too. Imagine, believing that some all-powerful being in the sky is responsible for all this, and that He is His own reason for being. Utter nonsense.
Apparently, it's REAL easy to botch the installation on this thing, so DON'T INSTALL IT unless you've got a team that is KNOWN TO BE COMPETENT WITH IT! Get references. And if you don't have to use it, then don't! Too many horror stories have I heard from friends! Heed my words, or suffer the Dr.'s fate you will!
Yes, the OS is complex, and the single most important capability in it is the ability to match patterns. Think about how simple grep is; now think about how complicated it can become when a regex is added. It is incredibly powerful when used correctly, but the concept is simple. Now think about relational data; how easy is it for data to be (in)correctly correlated? Most of the psychoses suffered by humans get back to the problem of incorrectly correlated data. Only a relative handful of mentally ill people have a genuine problem with the "hardware" installed. (For another way of looking at it, think of the faulty idea of correlation == causality...and imagine the entire spectrum of relational data being based on that faulty idea...this is where things like the Jerry Springer Show come from)For one more way of looking at it, imagine a spreadsheet filled with data...with the columns and rows all put in the wrong place. Imagine the confusion this would cause! I'm pretty lucid, and think of how confused *I* sound!
I haven't read the Apache or Artistic licenses, so I can't comment on those. However, if they use more or less the same scheme as the GPL then it really doesn't matter whether a minor follows the GPL license or not. He downloads it, modifies it, redistributes it with the modifications but doesn't include the GPL...who would know? And of those who would or would not know, how many would use that minor as a source for the source code? Not many, I'll bet. Yeah, technically it could be an issue, but not bloody likely. I STILL want to see if minors can be held to EULAs. Any lawyers want to comment? I'm waiting...
Apple is technically within their rights here, and it's even (arguably) a good idea. It's a shame that he can't contribute, but Apple needs to protect themselves from liability. Of course, they could accept his contributions via a proxy, I believe, and thus allow him his contributions. Still, it's a shame that we have to do this nowadays...
You make good points. I doubt that they don't have a comprehensive plan taking all of this into account. But woe betide them if they don't! I know from experience that just moving people from team to team within a company can be a pain in the rump, let alone trying to get two companies, often with different cultures, to integrate. Who gets to come and go on a schedule? Who gets a more flexible schedule? People can get downright nasty about things like that, especially if they're used to getting their way. Good luck to 'em!
Yes, you're right! Report to me immediately for child safety retraining. I'm now the authority. I want you to give up all your money to me. I also want you to stop going to work, and steal from others in order to get money for me. In exchange, I will strap your kids into a chair in an underground bunker that will be safe from every conceivable harm, including terrorist bombings. Now, they'll never see daylight and they'll eat turnip mush, but they'll be safe, I guarantee it. And you, well, you must become my willing slave. After all, you're civil liberties aren't important, right? I'll need your help pouring the concrete for the bunker. Of course, I'll be free to whip and beat you if you are insubordinate, because your civil liberties will be non-existent. And I'll be able to tell you what to say, and tell you what's appropriate for you to see/read/hear/eat. And, of course, you had better get used to the idea of being raped nightly by me, because you have no civil liberties. But I guarantee that your kids will be safe! Oh, yes, no harm will come to them at all! I guarantee it! No thieves, bullies, child molesters/pornographers, germs, accidents, scrapes, bumps, bruises, NOTHING will happen to your children. But I will enslave you, your spouse, kill your parents, steal from your accounts, take your home, rape you and your spouse at will, censor you, beat you, anything I damned well please because you're willing to give up your civil liberties. You poor fucking dope. You are an ass and don't deserve the freedoms you so blithely throw away. Go move to some other country that has no freedoms and when you come crawling back on your hands and knees to the United States you'll be worshipping daily at the Altar of the Constitution. And take your kids with you. My freedom is more important than anything else in this world. It's more important than innocence of youth. It's more important than my continued life, or yours. It's more important than my family, or yours. It's more important than my friends. It's more important than my children. It's more important than my religion. It's more important than my job. It's more important than my government. And I'd gladly sacrifice any and all of these things to have it because if I am not free then I am cannot have any of these things. Do you get it now?
This doesn't amount to political pressure as I see it. This seems to me to be a case of, "Your product isn't meeting our specifications. You need to change your ways or else you will be replaced." I believe that the free market should be "Darwinic" (that's supposed to be an adjective) but when lives are in the balance there is little room for error and putting pressure on Microsoft to change their ways is a GOOD thing. I wouldn't mind using Microsoft products if they were stable.
Wow! You memorized the whole song? You must be a real professional! Here, have some Hosehead beer!
Ah, how I do love our Hoser neighbors in the north. They gave us Moranis, Thomas, SCTV, Shatner. What do we give them? Acid rain. They're such good sports about it, though...
San Francisco landlords threw out long-term tenants in favor of tenants who could only afford rent for the short-term. Bad strategy. Now that dot-coms have gone to the away place San Francisco is now full of empty building and landlords begging tenants to come back. They aren't lowering the cost of rent, though. They expect that people will continue to pay the outrageous rents that the dot-coms paid. Survey says? BZZZZZT!! Oh, I'm sorry! It looks like you'll have to forgo the new Mercedes this year, Mr. Landlord.
Bad karma revisits landlords who threw out poor people for those who could handle higher rents! News at 11!
After all, who wants to search for plaid boxer shorts and actually come up with PLAID BOXER SHORTS? My goodness, it would create ANARCHY! No, when I search for something I want it to come up with whatever they WANT to show me, not what I wanted! Why, those websites will certainly distract me from whatever it was I was searching for in favor of purchasing their fine wares! And that's what I want; I want to be a mindless sheep that clicks on every link and goggles at every banner ad that gets put in front of me.
Um, right. Look, Lazarus Long put it best when he said, "One man's religion is another man's belly laugh." If someone starts the Church of What's Happening Now and avoids taxes then I'm all for it. How do I jump on the bandwagon? I spend my money WAAAAYYY better than the government does. Oh, wait, did I say MY money? I guess that means it's...MY money! Sonofagun! I like MY money. It gets me lots of nifty toys...
Yes, the system works. It is imperfect, I'll grant you, as time is the sum total of our capital in life and the system inherently steals time from us. But it works.
The idea of protecting the public from certain kinds of speech is a good argument and a flawed argument; a person is free to lie, yes, but not for the purposes of stealing money. That's fraud, not free speech. The public is being protected from criminals, not from the speech itself. And if people were not allowed to say and act as they please then wouldn't there be oppression as was found in England at the time of the writing of the 1st Amendment?
As for the CD/DVD copyright issue, let me make it clear:
Playing "Cop Killer" by Body Count is free speech
Copying "Cop Killer" by Body Count onto another medium for the purposes of back-up is fair use
Copying "Cop Killer" by Body Count for re-distribution and profit is stealing from Ice T. Major uncool, and dangerous if T finds out that you're jackin' him.
Yeah, I thought the same thing. I was going to say something to this guy about it but I was too busy sewing my Jedi robes for May 16. Thanks for getting to it!
Except that it had been done using sensors placed on someone's body vs. coded. Sounds brilliant, though! I'd like to see some trash-and-smash on the big-screen that they haven't been able to do before.
I work for a little telecommunications company most of you have probably never heard of. It's a great place to work! Now, lately, because our stock has been plummeting, we've had to make a few course corrections, so it's seemed that we've been directionless. But now we've made our cuts and we'll be back to business as usual, just less of it.
Anyway, my management has always been direct, specific, and helpful. They haven't forgotten that their jobs, as managers, is to HELP the workers get their job done. While one manager did sometimes give you the overwhelming feeling of having been scolded by Miss Tightbun, the stereotypical harsh schoolmarm, she did give specific and relevant directions.
I'm sorry to hear that NASA isn't well-managed. I know that sometimes research takes a turn for the holistic, causing focus to scatter, but that's when a manager needs to set up special teams. Yeah, I know, sub-committees are no fun, but they can be useful.
Yup, they are illegal imports. *CUSTOMS* has determined this...US Customs? Hmmmm? Now they're interpreting law? I'm glad I was made aware of this. I thought courts decided these things but I guess not.
Sounds like Zophar had better return these to Nintendo...after he receives a check in the amount that he paid for them. I say screw Nintendo. They have such a big budget? Let THEM go after the people who made it in order to get re-imbursed. After all, Zophar paid for it fair and square, right? He didn't sneak it over the border, right?

That was a pretty glowing review for a little purple gorilla. I don't trust it one goddammed bit. Sounds like it was written by an ad-man.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this...
