If you have a 'Cube, Tales of Symphonia is an excellent choice (though, given your "dumbed down" comment, I would recommend you set it on the high difficulty setting immediately; I'm about five hours in and I find it a little too easy).

I'm looking forward to seeing the Atelier series come over as well; I'd been following them for quite a while from afar and am just now getting ready to dive into importing, but having the English-language version available is always a plus.

I still think that a US-developed FF-style RPG could be wildly successful if it has the sense to learn from the mistakes made in the last few times it was tried (Secret of Evermore, Shadow Madness, etc). Oh, and if they get a decent writer. I guess what I'm saying is that I really wanted Advent Rising to be an RPG, but we'll see.

Honestly. I have broadband at home, but my primary computer is a laptop right now. I've been looking into getting a new machine to customize for gaming, and this might just be the best plan for me. Why, you may ask?

    AOL.

I used it for my ISP for a month while I was unemployed (about the only time I was ever thankful for a free disc in the mail) and found it to be usable, if not the most pleasant experience.

I travel quite a bit between a couple relatives' houses which don't have persistent net connections. If the contract does not require me to use AOL as the ISP on the cheap machine, or if it will accept "AOL for Broadband" (which I will never use), I'll gladly sign up once I get some extra cash, then begin loading good components in there. The dial-up will be a good backup for the laptop.

Of course, that's just me, and I'm crazy. Sure, there are better alternatives, but in my situation, this looks pretty tempting.

That just time-shifts the attack. The idea is to spread the onslaught of requests evenly over the hour or over multiple sources.

RSS is a good idea in principle but this sort of problem is why publishing middle-men were created for paper-type publications. Content producers submit to a syndicator, who has the capability to distribute to the masses who want the content. I don't see why you couldn't do that for RSS feeds; you'd just have to make sure the company who holds the syndicating servers isn't evil. (Google GRSS, anyone?)

Agreed. I actually didn't make the connection between Nisan and the reformation until you mentioned it-- and trust me, when I played XG I was still a somewhat religious person.

The original poster seems to be somewhat against religion in general, so I'll forgive his implication that the only "accurate" portrayal of religion in gaming is a negative one. The mentions of Grandia (he probably meant Grandia II) and Eternal Darkness affirm this fact. He's entitled to his opinion, of course, as am I; I just think that there are other, better portrayals of religion out there. Specifically, La Pucelle's Church of the Holy Maiden (demon hunters, with little or no corruption-- of course, they're diametrically opposed to a second church which is portrayed as demon worshippers, so I guess things even out).

I'd be willing to bet there are more good portrayals of religion. If anything, I'd like to see a noir-themed action game where the player can go to a priest for mission objectives or assistance of some sort-- something like the scenes in the old gangster movies where an aging pastor gives the detective some news he overheard in confession. The basic idea being that clergy of all types can be portrayed realistically without making them saints or demonizing them.

Of course, religious controversy sells games, so we'll never see anything like that ever. But it's a nice thing to hope for.

One or the other... devious or sloppy... but surely not both.

Yes, it is both. It's sloppy because whoever wrote this virus forgot to disable the suicide code before releasing it into the wild. The writer obviously would have written this into the virus during development so that he didn't hose his own machine.

It's devious because now virus writers know that "forgetting" to "fix" their virus pisses off more people in high places, instead of just plain pissing off more people. It wastes resources and diverts attention from bigger threats-- or smaller threats which just get lucky.

It's a tactic so totally stupid that it borders on brilliance.

  16. FFX and Xenosaga on On The Secret Life Of Videogame Voice Actors · · Score: 2

In both these games, some of the biggest thrills I've had have been hearing a random NPC's voice and going "Holy shit, it's Tenchi!" (Matt Miller voiced Clasko in FFX and X-2) or "Aw yeah, Vash is on the bridge!" (Jonny Yong Bosch as an unnamed lieutenant on the Woglinde). The voice acting from all of the cast members was excellent; it's the anime alumni, however, who sometimes provide the most memorable performances (to anime fans, anyway).

On a related note, nobody's really mentioned Kingdom Hearts yet, either. Disney standards being what they are, the voice acting was top-notch from Disney and original character actors alike. I especially liked James Woods' performance as Hades (reprising his role from Hercules), and since Greece is an actual section of the game world for KH2 I'd be shocked if he didn't return for a third stab at the character.
