A few years ago I started using Scala and have even worked at shops where I convinced them to let me use it on larger scale telecom projects. There are things in Scala that can be terse and weird, but it's more than just a clean version of Java. If you learn all the tricks, it's got a lot of syntactic sugar and functional syntax that lend itself to shorter more manageable code. I'm still using it for some pretty big projects like BigSense.io.
Although it's not just Scala, Groovy and Clojure are both languages that try to leverage the existing JVM and the rich base of Java libraries with a newer language.
Java was a big stepping stone during its time. It did a lot of things right, but the backwards comparability and keeping in horrible concepts (checked exceptions, no real properties, interfaces) has kept it from really growing as a language. I think the future of the JVM won't include as much Java.
There are a number of articles I read on this that I don't feel like ducking right now, but basically there were many attempts and none of them gained the traction needed. The big thing that needed fixing was full process control. You can do that without all the other crap that comes with systemd. Maybe a combined init+inetd...okay I can get that. Maybe auto-launching apps with sockets...but no wait...dbus already does that. Oh lets just integrate everything with dbus.... You know...up until this point, this is that bad.
The overall idea is good, but then you get into binary logs (wtf?), crazy commands (/etc/init.d/servicename stop vs systemctrl stop servicename.service), docket support (built into the init system?! WTF?)... it just goes turtles all the way down.
I wish I had the time to invest in trying to at least stub out the basics of systemd and kill the rest, but it's really massive at this point.
Mine had the touch screen issue. It was also too big. I dumped mine for a Sony Z3C. You know the crazy thing? Cyanogen Mod run betters on my Z3C than it did the OnePlus!
Also OnePlus tried to make Cyanogen seem like the bad guys with all the crap that went on. Cyanogen barely let any info out, but just watching the OnePlus advertising and crappy invite process, I could tell they were a garbage company. Being a software engineer myself, I think Cyanogen was not most of the blame in that little war. Fuck OnePlus.

I refused to pulled crazy triple shifts after I the Thanksgiving break and was let go. I was so glad. It was totally not worth it and unemployment felt awesome after all that rubbish.
And this is why I hate the idea of self driving cars. It's an insane amount of complexity to make a car self-driving. For a fraction of that effort (although a lot more pain an initial expense) we could lay down rails through every suburb and have automated travel cars. It would require a fraction of the processing power; even with you account for all the sensors to prevent the cars from running over little kids and such.
Self driving cars are an insane amount of effort on shit technology: cars! It's like Bitcoin. It's better money, but the problem is money is shit. We should be moving away from money entirely, not trying to make a newer version. You can put M&M and sprinkles on shit and it's still shit.
Public transport, better rails, better subways: all these things are absolutely necessary to keep us from destroying our planet. Whether you believe climate change is man made or not is irrelevant. Event excluding carbon emissions, all the other pollution that goes into our goods and transportation is excessive. Drastic changes need to be made, ten years ago, to keep us from running out of resources. All we do now is start more wars to get those resources, pushing back the inevitable.
There is almost no outrage anymore to the rape-a-scanners. There are studies showing people who have high levels of CAT scans have an increase risk of cancer above baseline. There has never been an independent (non-TSA) study on the body scanners or milimeter-wave machines.
Fifteen years from now, are we going to see a significant increase of certain cancers for all frequent fliers?
I have a Vivid ViViFi adapter for that. Their an Australian company that uses Wi-Max (Sprint's old 4G protocol; although at a different frequency so you can't use old Sprint hardware). You can pay when connecting if you need some emergency GB when your Internet goes down. In the US, I just use to tether via Sprint (I had an unlimited plan, but that was 3 years ago so I'm pretty sure that plan is gone now).

Wow...that is .. fightning. I dont' understand why I'm using this command incorrectly and abusing it, so could you add a crappy workaround.
I do think systemv init scripts needed to replaced and I'm for full-process control...but systemd is a horrible implemention of that.

Well minimum could be 0 if the conditions are bad. Usually the maximum include "ideal conditions" which may or may not be defined.
