I hadn't even thought about people who assemble their own PC's, but I was going to ask how any singular government could regulate PC's built in countries other than their own. Tariff them so hard that it's impossible to import them. it works for making imports cheaper.
that's it! "Jon Katz" is a pseudonym for a bunch of cats!
They must be set loose in a room full of keyboards and then they run their output through spell and grammar checkers until it's grammatically correct. (and follows the amateurish 3.5 structure that I learned in junior HS english)
other than backwards compatibility and data warehousing, what do you use these mainframe-class boxes for these days? Why run thousands of instances of Linux on one mainframe? the only reason I could think of would be a development environment, but if you're doing that much Linux dev everyone should have their own workstations..
but battle.net has no use without a Blizzard game. If I buy Diablo II, and the x-pack for it, Blizzard gives me a free service to play the game on in a multiplayer environment. They do this as an incentive or even a -reward- to their customers.
Duplicating that is a slap in their face, IMO. I don't like their practices, and I'm no fanboy, but if battle.net isn't good enough for you, go play AOE II or something.
Bottom line: IT'S JUST A GAME. Don't lose your freedom over it.
Some of us found meaning in our lives before we had to take money from the corporate machine to survive. As such we have a different perspective, and would give up all of this stuff if we could only do what we really love 24/7.
I don't expect you to understand that. You probably have only ever wanted to be a programmer in your life. That's a valid dream, but when the burnout comes (and it will - trust me) I pity you.
it's going to end up like in Gibson where it's the citizens vs. the corporations in global warfare. start buying guns now while the gov't still lets us (in the USA)
ha, it is kind of funny to see them. They're tricycles with full size bike wheels, there's a basket between the rear wheels for carrying things. with the gearing they have they can carry a good load.
My dad came up with a good point. He works in a steel mill and when they have to travel a long distance, they use 3-wheeled bicycles. Segways would be great for them, because the bikes are slow and cumbersome.
Celebrate the ruthless slaughter of 14 gangsters! the heart pumps blood and blood is red and red is the color of romance and roses are usually red and the Massacre shed a lot of blood!
GO CAPONE!
wouldn't it be irony to the nth power if MSFT had all their source code repositories stored on an offshore data haven? or that they actually OWNED Sealand*?
* I may have the name wrong, I'm thinking of the data haven that is its own nation built on an old oil rig somewhere in the atlantic

Well, duh. Why should someone who's used to intuitive layout via a WYSIWYG interface suffer with obsolete antiquated shit like LaTeX and ghostscript?
DTP is NOT a good reason to use Linux or any form of Unix. I don't care how pretty it is when you're done, getting there is like SEAL training.

I just realized something.
Every time an MS story is posted here on slashdot, you can post the exact same message that you just posted, only worded differently, and get to 50 karma in ~12 stories as long as you remember to not use your +1 bonus after you pass [what is it?] 20 or 25.
"New C Primer Plus" published by The Waite Group. There is no better instructional C book.
the kind that require dongle cracks :)

it's so ironic that we atheists know more about the bible than the people who follow it.
:)
as someone who can appreciate good literature, there are some great short stories/epic poems in the bible. Exodus would make a hell of a movie
call me naive, stupid, whatever.

bah. forgot to say "like they _were_"
so does that mean that the X-Men are like dot-com geeks? (powerful yet hated)

I thought they just made clothes for wannabe-yuppie women and fine accessories. Didn't know they were in the materials business :)

Oh, stop it with the karma whoring. Everyone knows espousing the cheapass libertarian view will get you modded up.
The point is that the Segway HAS no real use. It's all just a 'isn't this neat' kind of thing.
If you don't get that, I feel sorry for you.

they must have the cleaning crew from Wright-Patterson there for a weekend getaway

Sounds fishy to me.
I don't think I believe this.
