  1. Re:Howard Stern and $500 million reasons on AOL and XM Joining Forces for Online Radio · · Score: 1

This is such a stupid theory. HBO isn't successful because they have shows that have people that say "fuck". They are successful because they have great shows. Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Sopranos aren't great because of cuss words, they're great because they are well written and produced. Same goes for Howard's show. You don't stay number one for twenty years because you can talk dirty... anyone can do that. Howard is number one because he actually is interesting. O&A have been trying to out-Howard Howard for years and have thus far gotten nowhere.

I had my digital camera stolen from checked luggage by these people! I accept that I am partially at fault but packing it in luggage in the first place. Still, it should not be defacto assumption that my items will be stolen by the same people that are checking for BOMBS and WEAPONS in luggage! If these people are engaged in petty theft, what's to stop these same people from accepting $10,000 to PLANT a foreign object into someones bag??? And I'm not basing my opinion solely on my own experience. After some research, I found that theft complaints went up after TSA started checking bags! If they can't even do simple background checks on their own employees, how can anyone feel safe???

  3. WOW! I'm loading up on Apple shares! on Microsoft to Disable Online Windows Activation · · Score: 2, Insightful

This has to be the most unbelievably dumb thing I have seen Microsoft do in light of the mac mini selling for $499. One too many crash is going to send people flocking into the arms of Apple. And since mac covers the basics that most home users do (browse, email, word-processing, digital pics, etc.), this is going to be a no-brainer. I'll be buying one later this year in order to avoid this hassle. Also my PC will be a Linux box by the end of the year as well. The only reason I'm using XP now is out of sheer laziness. My Linux box had broken down and I didn't have the time to set up a new one. I bought a laptop and ran what came with it. I've already reinstalled 3 times and if I have to go through this, I will not even bother! This is great news! I'm already an Apple shareholder and I will DEFINITELY be buying more shares with this news. EVEN AT ABOVE $80!!!!

With all these online petitions to save these series with cult followings, you'd think that TiVo would see that as an opportunity. Imagine buying shows at $1 an episode. Or a full season for a discount. TiVo really needs to turn itself into a delivery platform if it wants to survive. I'm surprised they haven't done it already. I hate to say it but with my ReplayTV, I effictively get free cable via Poopli . I do this because such a service is not available. I would pay if one did exist though... less work!

Next they'll try to outlaw refridgerators and toilets because they keep people from watching commercials. IDIOTS!

  15. Movie companies have been doing this for years! on Universal Music To Cut CD Prices · · Score: 1

The reason I do not believe movies will get "napsterized" is because they are way ahead of the music companies in terms of common sense. Yesterday, I paid for Fifth Element and Dogma DVDs at Best Buy. Fifth Element had no features but Dogma is loaded with them. The extra content and commentary is the main reason I buy DVDs but more importantly is that they cost too low to make it practical for me not to favor them over downloading. I paid $20 for the two DVDs. By the time I searched and downloaded a copy that might be a quality copy, I've gone over $20 in time spent. Movie companies have done a GREAT job in lowering prices for older quality movies and providing a disincentive for piracy. It's about time record companies learn to do the same.

MicroSoft is in my opinion doing a wrong thing by making their documents unsharable. WordPerfect documents can be shared almost seamlessly from versions 6 thru 11. Forcing everyone to upgrade to share documents is expensive and impractical. People should start encouring exporting to PDF to make their documents sharable and hopefully Adobe won't do something as stupid as this.

Agreed. I got reunited with WordPerfect when 8.0 came out. The Windows versions 6 and 7 sucked ass (although I loved DOS version 6). I used WP since 4.2 before then. I remember when I had to switch Word I was so offended that there was no reveal codes especially during those times when the document wasn't before. In WordPerfect, I could "look under the hood" and fix it myself. No such thing in Word. To this day, Word still pisses me off!

  19. Nah... on Corel Ousted From Public Life? · · Score: 3, Interesting

What's really sad is that WordPerfect is a better product than MicroSoft Office and few people realize it. It's cheaper, it's easier to use and it makes PDFs. But I think things are getting better for WordPerfect recently than worse. At least vendors like Gateway, Compaq and Dell are bundling these in their consumer and lower end models to cut costs for both themselves and their customers. This can at least help them survive. Also, I think in Corel's case it's good that they might go private. That way management can make decisions and not be at the whims of the market. Yes it's VCs but VCs are more predictable than the market.

Conspiracy theorist always complain about consolidation with claims that it "hurts competition" or "raises prices". But in many cases it does lower costs and lowers prices for consumers. In a business sense, consolidation doesn't always guarantee success for "the corporation" anyway. If that were the case, HP would dominate the market and AOL shareholders would still be happier than pigs in shit. Point is, it can go either way with consolidation.
