I think what a lot of people are missing with this topic is that most (all?) of the people who actually care about music have long since migrated towards the internet for music discovery. What incentive do radio stations have to play music that music enthusiasts like if music enthusiasts can sort through the entire history of recorded music on the internet in significantly higher quality?
The radio caters to people unwilling to use the internet to discover music, which should say quite a bit about the type of music they will play.
So the entire industry is transitioning towards tablets and cell phones that can host a full desktop environment, and you're suggesting that they will just cash out and continue selling regular smartphones?
Apple has patents that predate Windows 8 and Ubuntu Mobile (unity 8 as a concept too?) for a universal touchscreen + desktop UI, that would mark the unification of OSX and iOS. The only reason they aren't making a move is because they know iOS is their golden boy, and making the move now would be self-cannibalism. Steve Jobs apparently pushed for the iPad to be a small mac rather than a large iphone, which makes absolute sense.
Someone needs to light a fire under their ass though, the most recent product cycle was mediocre. Hackintosh is the only option for anyone that actually wants an upgrade.
You'll find me first in line to buy such a device. Phones and tablets just don't fucking do anything.
Are there people on/. in the year 2017 that AREN'T exclusively using unix and unix-like operating systems? You guys know macOS already looks chic and doesn't impose nonstop brain damage upon its users, right? All of the settings are in one application too.
This whole argument is fucking retarded. I buy LPs of my favorite albums because it's fun to have more collectable versions of them that I can hang on the wall. Digital music is objectively superior. If an album has a different master on vinyl, download a rip.
i'm glad you feel comfortable speaking for the 90% of the population that lives in urban and suburban areas, drives a (american) standard 15-30 miles to work, and doesn't go offroad.
does it ever make you curious why americans are the only ones preoccupied with owning pickup trucks and SUVs the size of pickup trucks, despite having 2 kids and carrying at most 6 or 7 bags of groceries, or perhaps luggage? why is it that the rest of the developed world is perfectly content driving normal sized wagons, hatchbacks, and sedans, and doesn't feel an impetus for 50,000lbs of towing capacity and a solid 12mpg?
I'd imagine having a bunch of different distros embracing this Bash for Ubuntu Linux subsystem for Windows will lead to a lot of the bugs being ironed out.
Embrace, extend, extinguish. At least the New Microsoft (TM) is giving us what we want, though.
Totally agree about the "PC gamer" userbase and that the paper-racing is ridiculous, HOWEVER:
I think that PC gaming is 10x more conducive towards smaller developers putting out truly creative and interesting games. Antichamber, for instance, is one of the only single player games that has really rocked my socks lately, and was basically a personal project at one point. I also think that competitive gaming is much more fleshed out on PC, and that you would never see shit like League, CSGO, and Doter on consoles (aside from the input-barrier).
You still have no idea what products are actually "worth", and manufacturers want to keep it this way as much as possible. The less you know about the value of an item, the better.
It really is a war of information. If consumers ALL had the information they needed to compare pricing, or to decide which foods will kill them, you'd have a very different image of a "free market".
I'm thinking ubuntu-phone esque convergence of macOS and iOS, if I understand this Galaxy S8 correctly.
Probably delusional. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when the touch screen macbook pro meeting turned into the touch bar macbook pro meeting for fear of self-cannibalizing.
>I want to listen to music outside of the mainstream radio circuit
>I can't commit any time to finding it
>???

No GitHub icons either.

got em XDDDDD
if you are are a designer and don't know what "design language" means, i'm more concerned for you than him.
excuse me, it's called "bravery".
>microsoft is trying to force hardware manufacturers to build a cohesive apple brand image and UX for them (spread across 20 brands)
They have TOUCH SCREENS guys, how can they not be flying off the shelves?
Yeah! REAL music has crackles!

>No one ever got fired for buying Microsoft.
Which situations are you put in where you are assigned to buy computers without concern for support/interoperability?
If someone works in an all Mac shop and are assigned to buy new computers, could you say "no one ever got fired for buying Apple"?
>he thinks engaging in synchronous communication is ever ideal for 99% of remote interactions
I like the late-90s PBS ZOOM typography :^)
as usual, see: Black Mirror

I use cmus for FLAC, but man would I sure love to see foobar on mac.

The free market gives us a gift every once in a while.
I'll ask just one more time, this is local?
Apparently reddit is the only place on the internet where there are normal humans with access to the website's databases and backend APIs.
The most useful thing IMO would be the yellow-to-green much of europe has.
