1. Look cool. 2. Be healthy. 3. Do not buy small items that will not last more than three years with credit.
If you really need to finance $800, perhaps you should not be buying it. As far as I am concerned, Dell provides cheap hardware that performs relatively well for its price. What they do with their financing is really not that bad considering that private banks charge through the roof for college loans.
I'll be the fist one. I could not agree more.
As somebody who deals with vendors and their techies on a daily basis I am simply outraged that some people are still employed in IT. I don't care if you speak Russian, German or Spanish. If you have what it takes, come here and let's compete.
I live in a highly populated area with many stop lights and traffic jams that see no end. It is a pretty bad place to be, especially if you love big SUVs. For example, my Xterra barely gets 20mpg on highway. Yet, I spend only $80/month on gas. What's the secret? Get out and walk, bike or take public transportation! I get a car that I want to drive without any pains at the gas pump. Has anybody tried that yet?
Dude, you crack me up. If you are intellectual you should understand that your moral values are what they are: They are yours. Not mine, not ours, not everybody's. They are simply your fucking values. If you do not like to gamble, then do not do it. Simple as that. Stand up for the 'nanny' state today and you will face the music tomorrow.
Well, in this case you buy special software that is tweaked to return all of the results. I am dead serious. This is what law firm use. You search, get results, save them on a DVD (with all the relevant stuff) or whatever you have and that is it:)
Hi, this is offtopic, but the behavior is similar to many commerical search engines. If your query is too broad, you are getting too many results. The assumption is that if there too many documents, then the query term is not that relevant; therefore, you need to modify the query and reduce the recall. Example: If searching for 'moo' returns you 100,000,000 results, then 'moo' is a common term and chances are that the result #10,000 will never been seen by a user.

This is a great example of how current politicians (Democrats and Republicans) are selling out the ideas of founding fathers and other patriots who fought for the freedom of this land. What ever happend to "give me liberty or give me death?"
If I were Sergey Brin, I would order all logs destroyed and tell the government to fuck off. People came to this country to seek freedom from governments and religions; look what we have here nowadays. I simply cannot believe that more people do not stand up for their rights. Today it is some query logs, tomorrow it is your journal. The land of the scared and home of the slaves.
I am not a violent person... However, news like that support my theory that things are getting out of control and the only way to protect youself is to ensure that you can exercise your 2nd Amendment rights and get a gun (or a dozen).
This is not about Republicans vs. Democrats. This is about keeping our government in check every so often. According to the Supreme Court, it is okay if a company takes over my property in order to build high-valued condos. Abortion is getting banned. A religious city is being built in Florida and kids cannot learn about evolution in Kansas. On top of that we have a foreign state-run company that aims to operate our ports. What the hell is going on here? Is this the end of the world?
Unless U.S. citizens take their heads our of their asses, we will end up with North Korean state of affairs by 2010.
All taxes are out of hand... In the United States you get penalized if you make more money or chose to invest, in Norway you get a shaft if you like to spend a lot and in Canada, you have to pay extra for CD-Rs.
In order to fix this sytem, one approach is not going to be enough. We need to limit the power of the government and the power of the corporate world if we want to survive. Otherwise, we will soon give up our first-born boys... You know, boys cause trouble and all of that:)
When I lived in the former USSR my parents knew that I was going to get an engineering degree because that was the only way to good life; well, at least according to them. Starting from the first grade I was told that the only way to become a well-educated human being was to get a Master's degree in a discipline related to science or engineering. It was almost expected that I would go to school for five or six years in order to get a degree and then become some dude who wears white robes at some lab... Well, that did not happen.
After moving to the United States and talking to other immigrants from China, ex-USSR and India, I realized that most of us had the same bullshit pressure from our parents. That is how most of us ended up meeing each other in computer science classes. Well, to be honest with you, I liked computer science because of the possible career choices and due to my natural interest in technology. However, some of my foreign class mates could not see themselves doing anything but getting a Master's degree and going through all the schooling at once because they were told to do that. It was expected from them!
Naturally, people who are born and raised in the United States see choices. It is not uncommon to graduate from high school, take a year off, travel, go to school, figure out what you want to do with life and then go back to graduate school when you are thirty. In other countries this may not be an option and that is why many people aim to get as much education in a specific discipline as soon as possible. The question is: Does it do one any good? As for me, I am not planning on going to a graduate school until later on. I have not figured out what I want to do with my life yet...
I was one of those who bought the latest PowerPC powerbook (15" widescreen) a week before Christmas. When new laptops came out, I was really itching to return mine and get a brand new one instead. Why? Mostly due to the hype...
Once I learned more about the new MacBook Pro, I started to question this update:
Why did they remove Firewire 800? To you this may sound silly, but to somebody who has to move digital pictures here and there, this was kinda useful. Most of my pictures are either in RAW or TIFF; therefore, I did benefit from Firewire 800.
What about that modem? Nobody uses modems anymore. Yet, at least 3-4 times a year I end up at a skiing camp or somewhere w/o broadband but with a phone line. Since my provider offers me free dial-up with my DSL service, I keep a connection profile just in case. Without a m things won't be bad; just less convenient:(
No dual dvd burning? Same thing. If you like to take many digital pix, then you have to love anything that offers large capacity. Taking dual layer burning away won't cause millions deaths, but still:)
Overall, I was upset by the initial quality of my laptop (G4) as well. It came with a dead battery and although Apple shipped me a new one overnight, it was not as cool as getting a fully working laptop. Considering the price, PowerBooks (and MacBook Pros) should have much better quality.
Thanks,
When I was looking for a job right out of college, I got an offer to work somewhere in Alabama. Since I did not feel like leaving in the South, I declined the offer and move to one of the worst job markets in the country, Boston.
At that time, Boston was the second hardest hit area in terms of IT unemployment rates. The first one was San Francisco. I worked hard and picked up random jobs here and there. I learned how to compete and make money when times were tough. Now I am moving to California not to save moeny, but to enjoy my life while I am still young. See, I love night life, going out to nice restaurants and have an ability to wear dress shoes whenever I want to. Although I adore rural life style as well, moving somewhere where I cannot get an expresso or where Wal-Mart is the only place to shop, is not for me.
However, I think that rural sourcing will balance out the costs of living everywhere in the United States. After the bubble exploded, the rent index in San Francisco dropped to a reasonable level for commercial property. If you monitor rent index vs. price index for residential real estate you will see that the rent index is not rising as fast the the real property price. In fact, my apartment in SF is goign to cost only $100 more than my apartment in Boston. Most of my friends who stayed in rural areas do enjoy a lower cost of living; however, they are getting paid less and they are limited in what they can do. Currently, I am comfortable with maxing out my 401K why my friend who lives in Vermont and enjoys a lower salary cannot do that. If you spend smart, the higher salary of metropolitain areas can benefit you. The biggest downside about living in a rural area is the job market. If your company decides to cut costs there, where are you goign to find a job? I have been in places where the economy of a small area was going down the toilet because one of the largest employers decided to cut 25% of the current workforce. Also, if you start to hate your job, you will have to move back. However, I am still for rural sourcing: More people in rural areas equals to fewer people in cities. I guess this works out both ways.
Finally, not everything can be moved somewhere far away from the civilization. If you work in a B2B environment where you have to visit customers or do some sort of sales, you must be where your customers are. The market will tell you what to do.
Our governor is the same person who laughed at the KKK joke when he was introduced by a fellow politician as somebodoy who had to run a state led by KKK (Kerry and Kennedy Klan). I would not expect this man to say anything meaningful; just listen to any of his speeches and you will see why.
The fact that Asia has more advanced science degrees does not mean anything. First of all, Asia is not a freaking country. Secondly, having education has very little to do with success if you do not know what to do with it. Take a look at the republics of the former USSR. They inherited the knowledge and school systems that minted the best of the best. I do not see those countries to be on the top lists when it comes to human rights or levels of prosperity. The fact is the rest of the world is catching up.
More educated people around the world is not such a bad thing. The economies will prosper and prosperity along with business relationships leads to peace. Let's face it: Why bomb your neighbor if you have something to lose? Instead of shrinking the markets and alienating the public, we should embrace the fact that people around the world are interested in learning, building, creating and brining economic prosperity. In the end, all of us will benefit from it. Just like American companies are seeking to expand in Asian markets European and Asian companies will aim to do more business in the United States. You cannot do that without hiring Americans.
Education is good for everybody... And Mitt needs get back to fixing the damn Mass Pike.
Your comment should be taken with a grain of salt because the price of Macs is not bad if you compare them to good Dell boxes with equivalent configuration. For a home user, this may be a problem; for a photographer who does digital it is a no brainer. I compared a Dell with dual CPUs to PowerMac G5. The price was identical. However, given the fact that OS is better for what I do (anything from sys administration to development, to digital photo processing), this was a much better choice.
If you want to play games, Macs should not be considered; there are not enough games to begin with. For $200 you can get an Xbox, a spare console and a game. If you spend more $, you can get a PlayStation which is going to be even better... The final answer is up to you.
Hi,
I do have one iPod as a present two years after I converted. I dumped my Windows box that used to run anything from 2003 to XP Professional. I am coming from a home/pro environment because an $1K mac replaced my need for Unix stability (I dumped a FreeBSD box as well) and Windows bugs. Simple as that.
Does Apple have problems? Absolutely. However, for somebody who deals with software, bugs and other people problems all day, it is a fucking gift from god.
Thanks,
A simple Candian boy has nothing to do with the U.S. I worked as a contractor though my school years as well. The problem is that the market is changing right now. We may not need as many comp. sci. students as you think. Plus, in the U.S. being a contractor is much harder, unless you work for a company that provides you with benefits. Healthcare is a mother-fucker (or lackthereof).
I think you're right on the target. It is impossible to outsource everything. Cubicle-only warriors who used to sit, get specs, code and ship the code somewhere are going to be gone. However, there is always consulting, security, management and other things that you can use to make money. Knowledge is capital. Use it wisely.
I did not go to a community college (and there is nothing wrong with any education as long as you get educated). I have a job that pays much more than $50K and I am pleased with that. However, the topic of this conversation is: Fewer kids get into Comp. Sci. This is a direct relationship with supply and demand. Compared to 1997, there is less demand for computer science grads. Plus, $50K is a joke. Seriously, you do not need to study in CS in order to make that much money.
I hate doing "me too" posts, but this is exactly what I went through. I graduated during the worst time when the unemployment level was sky high. So did my friends in non-tech majors. Last time I checked, nobody wants to spend -- or waste -- for years of school in order to end up unemployed. There are tons of articles that describe newly minted CEOS who decide to hire and developm in India or China because it is cheaper. Kids read that and decide not to fall into the same hole as the previous generation.
Sorry Bill, not every students gets to be one of the wealthiest people on the planet. Software was hot in 80s. Now it is a freaking commodity. Let's move on.
Not to pee on your parade, but I would highly advise you to keep your day job. Your financial anlaysis that you summed up in three sentences has nothing to do with buying mutual runds.

I have only one question: How the fuck do you expect kids to write, if you take the tools away from them? Most schools require students to print papers already. As a result, U.S. colleges and universities are flooded with people who cannot write in cursive. I met some college graduates who looked at my writing saying, "WTF, where did you learn how to write in cursive?" Well, see, in some countries writing in cursive is a requirement.
Instead of remembering how to spell, kids will use spell check and while teachers are talking "out of their asses" students will play their favorite games right in class! Instead of going low tech and giving student the basics, the state of Arizona decided to waste more money on stupid stuff that will become obsolete and outdated pretty soon. How about making laptops optional and spending more money on qualified teachers and programs that will increase the number of high school graduates and college students?
What the fuck? Some dude writes a bot that scans one fucking site for jobs and we are supposed to figure out how the market is doing? Are you on fucking crack? Seriously, please let me know if you need a calendar, because April 1st happened several months ago. Also, if you don't have any goddamn stories, don't post. Put a random ad or something.
On a better note: If you are trying to catch a hot trend in IT, it is too fucking late. Indians and Asians can do it for a tenth of the price and no matter how you swim, you'll head to the bottom if you compete with them. Yep, even if you have a Nobel prize. Instead of trying to figure out if SQL is worth studying, you should simply enjoy what you do or get the fuck out. This is pretty fucking easy. Also, do not get me wrong, IT will stay here, but if you're looking for money and to make a killing, IT is the worst field to be in right now. Want to earn good money? Try sales:)
You mean those hot tips about emerging stocks were not secret messages? Dammit. I should have known.
1. Look cool.
2. Be healthy.
3. Do not buy small items that will not last more than three years with credit.

I totaly agree with you. It is time for Americans to remember that the tree of liberty, by design, is required to drink some blood :)
Hahahaha:
As a moral and intellectual being...
Dude, you crack me up. If you are intellectual you should understand that your moral values are what they are: They are yours. Not mine, not ours, not everybody's. Well, in this case you buy special software that is tweaked to return all of the results. I am dead serious. This is what law firm use. You search, get results, save them on a DVD (with all the relevant stuff) or whatever you have and that is it :)

Try sales :)
