Is there a similar poll in Iran? Certainly the USA is more religious than atheist Europe, but that doesn't mean we're the most religious nation. I'm sure the Middle East, Africa, and much of Asia is more religious.
Nope! It just takes a good, but sheeplike follower, and a dynamic, charismatic, evil leader. If religion didn't exist, they'd use race, nationality, or hair color.
Apple is a little bit of a different issue, since Apple is also the OEM in addition to being the software developer. However, it's trivially easy to uninstall Safari if you're inclined to do so. You drag and drop the.app file into the trash
The fact that Apple's System Updater doesn't depend on Safari also helps there.
When I installed Ubuntu about a month ago, I used an old CD from someone who decided not to install Linux, and one of the first things it did after installing was give me the choice to upgrade to 7.04. You don't need the command-line. You don't even need to know what you're doing. Just point & click.:)
Here's a scenario: You live in a rough part of town. There have been several well-publisized home invasions. It's 2AM and several masked men break down your door. One of them yells something, but you don't understand what he said. You have a gun in easy reach. Resisting arrest? What arrest? I was just defending myself!
Agreed! One time at work, my boss announced the latest stupid rule from his bosses. I just said that that was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard. I didn't need to throw in any "F" words or "S" words. (BTW, my boss agreed with me but avoided actually saying so)
All i want to do is run an installer and let it do its thing with MINIMAL input from my end. But in linux I have to shutdown the graphical shell (or whatever it is) change configuration files, make sure my kernel is updated, blah blah blah etc. etc. That's way to much shit that i EVER want to deal with. Keep in mind also that 80% of the population is the same way. As the parent post said, I JUST WANT IT TO WORK.
I've got good news. Modern consumer-oriented Linux distros do usually just work. I recently installed Fedora and I've never had to exit the GUI or manually edit config files (except to do stuff that normal humans wouldn't need or want to do), and the only kernel update was done automatically through its System Update. The major issue now is hardware support, but Linux is far better than it used to be, and Vista has problems there too.
So don't try and install it on a low powered PC. Consumers want the eye candy so they can say 'wow, that looks nice'. People still install Norton Anti-virus, so having a fast PC is clearly not a concern for your average punter
The vendors are PUTTING Vista on underpowered PCs. My GF's sister was going to buy a Vista box with 512M RAM (yikes) before I talked her out of it. I suspect much of the Vista-hate from non-geeks comes from that.
And I don't think people install Norton Virus. It comes with the box and stays there until someone who knows how bad it is nukes it.
All I know is, I never got a UAC prompt while moving, renaming, or deleting files. The only time I remember getting them was when Firefox wanted to upgrade itself. Are you sure you weren't using a beta version?
Well, I didn't have Vista self-detruct, but I did have a couple of hung boots with Vista. I used that as an excuse to try Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Vista, and THAT seemed to kill Vista.
I can see a danger that Ubuntu is training a generation of Linux users who neither know nor care what root is, and just type their password into whatever dialog box asks for it - that's setting us up for a Windows-style explosion of malware
How does that differ from Fedora, which also throws up a dialog box whenever I install/update software?
I wish we HAD a party that was only 50% rotten. Right now our choices are 99% vs 100%. And if the Dems actually win, those percentages will flip.
IIRC, there was an Asimov story where a defective robot broke a man's arm. It had the 3 Laws, but lacked the knowledge of how fragile humans are.
I still have DirecTV with my existing Direct Tivo. If my Tivo breaks and I can't get a replacement, THAT is the day I tell Direct to F-off.

Don't forget French poodles. Where were they 1 million years ago?
Twice? How do you figure that? In 2000, Gore narrowly won the popular vote but lost the electoral. However, in 2004 Bush won both, though not by much.

Well, at least the patch is getting fixed quicker than the hole.

Meh! That is totally untrue. Debian was obsolete long before Ubuntu existed.

who thinks black holes really suck?

OTOH, I swear at my home computer frequently.
Apple's "point releases" have more improvements than Windows full version changes. And Apple doesn't take 6-7 years to crank them out. :-P
I agree. Personally, I prefer Fedora to Ubuntu, probably partly because I had used RH in the past, but there's little difference for ordinary use.

Maybe the above poster has insomonia. :)

IIRC, we didn't have all these problems when we delivered mail on horseback. :)

It's a big universe. The odds that extraterrestrial life exists is high. The odds of us finding it in this big universe is not so high.
You might have done better if you'd told it in Esperanto. :)
